For me this makes absolutely zero sense unless Carpenter is really hard up for money.

Apart from the title and the opening music, it has absolutely nothing to do with the original movie/series nor with the books they were based on. Don't bother with it.

Agreed. Much of that has to do with the cast. The chemistry those actors had between themselves is the kind of thing that is extremely difficult to replicate.
