I'm currently playing "Mad Max" which was released 5 years ago but I just recently bought it during the last Steam sale so I'm very late to the party. Anyway, the game perfectly captures the feel of the Mad Max films and in the game you meet a guy by the name of Chumbucket who is an auto mechanic extraordinaire who will repair and upgrade you car as you progress in the game but he will also share his thoughts with you from time to time. He will also accompany you when you go out to drive on the "Great White".

What are some games you've played that had a memorable sidekick who would accompany you during the most of your journey? These are a few others that I remember fondly:

1. Alyx from Half Life 2
2. BD-1 from Jedi: Fallen Order

Chumbucket gets a few good lines in the game. If you forget and get into your car enough on the left side instead of the right (Australia drives on the left side of the road) he will chide you for it. He also has a great one liner comment straight out the the movie "Airplane". You just have to interact with the right
friendly NPC to hear it. However, his abnormal fear of ,and whinning about, the Buzzards will begin to wear thin toward the end of the game.

One other comes to mind and it was one of the sidekicks available in Fallout: New Vegas.

The character was a friendly Ghoul named Raul Tejada who always had a funny self depricating line or two. I was dead certain that he was voiced by Tommy Chong of Cheech & Chong fame. He just had that stoned Southern California Hippy vibe. Much to my surprise, the voice actor was instead the veteran character actor Danny Trejo--you know the guy who always plays evil looking Latin villians. Trejo's parents were Mexican American but he grew up in LA in the 70's so it makes sense.

Artillery adds dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl.

The imp or whatever you have in Shadow Warrior remake is hilarious.

And then there's Boo.

Don't mess with Boo.

What really impresses me is how not-annoying Alex is. In most cases escort/buddy missions are a pain, rather than a great way to tell a story and feel a connection with the AI. Yet Alex never stands in the way for more than a few seconds, she helps move the plot forward at exactly the right pace, and is wonderfully voice-acted. Even since then, the only games that I can remember that navigate the pitfalls of AI so wonderfully are GTA 5 and MGS 5.

Delilah in Firewatch is also quite memorable. Amazingly written and also excellently voice-acted, I never thought it was possible to create an emotional connection without ever showing the person, but Campo Santo succeeded.

He was absolutely great in "Heat". That's my favorite role of his.
