Lederhosen - OUCH! Engine exploded and took Willi out for two weeks? WOFF just keeps surprising us and not always in good ways.

Carrick - How can it be? It's MvR times three! Such historical accuracy in that film. Now as to trading three for one in their latest outing, Marcel's crew is fast going to run out planes and pilots doing it that way.

MFair - A good sortie for Ivan, and some fantastic screenshots! Well done.

Fullofit - Oh but Ziggy is getting so close to taking the lead. Will his latest claims be confirmed and put him over the top? The anticipation!

13 September 1917
11 Squadron R.F.C.
La Bellevue, France

Just before afternoon tea the alarm sounds! Lt. Frederick Abbott and his new G/O 2nd Lt. Wallace Wimund, along with the rest of 'B' Flight, quickly get airborne and give chase to a flight of DFWs spotted high above the camp.
[Linked Image]

After a lengthy stalking Abbott closes in on the trailing pair of enemy two-seaters a few miles north of Bapaume. The Boche seem unaware that they are being followed.
[Linked Image]

Having gone into a shallow dive to build up speed, Frederick makes a slashing pass from his target's portside and rakes the entire side of the bus as the Hun gunner springs to life and returns fire.
[Linked Image]

But it is too late. The volley from the Vickers has done its job and the Boche plane falls into a lazy spiral, with Abbott following to allow his green G/O some target practice.
[Linked Image]

However, in the trade of initial gunfire the main tank of the Bristol was holed and the King's duo are now running out of petrol. Frederick takes note of where the enemy fell as he then sorts out a place to land his own mount.
[Linked Image]

Safely on the ground two miles east of the aerodrome at Courcelles, Abbott and Wimund prepare for a hike. Three smoke columns can be seen rising up from the mud of No Man's Land, all DFWs to be claimed by the lads of 'B' Flight. A good days work!

MFair, another set of cracking photos. Looks like Ivan likes to get close and personal with his victims. Congrats on the latest victories. That should impress your new C.O.
BTW, you can write your reports offline. This way you’ll never lose your work if SimHQ craps out on you when you post. I’ve learned that the hard way. Hope everything is in good shape after those thunderstorms.

Lederhosen, perhaps if you didn’t jump out of your plane while still flying, the injuries wouldn’t be so severe?

Lou, that was a bad day for DFW’s. Oh wait, it’s the 13th. No wonder! Well done to Abbott and ... erm, new guy, despite that empty tank. A kill is a kill, right?

Robert, thank you. Good to see you stopping by from time to time. Me, expert with the Alb? I’m just glad it can carry a 1000 rounds. I can spray the sky liberally and hope for good results. What I am expert at is having my claims denied, despite all the evidence captured on film. When can we expect you to throw your hat in the ring and enlist? (See what I did there?)

13 September, 1917 06:00 morning mission
Wasquehal, Flanders Sector
Jasta 17
Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM
41 confirmed kills
Awaiting one claim confirmation

Still waiting for the Fee to be confirmed. Seems there was another claim on the same machine and more time was needed to determine who should be awarded the credit.
Hahn was scheduled for another patrol above friendly aerodrome. This time over Menen. At least it would be a short hop. He didn’t know how short it would actually be. Zygmunt was the first one to take off. As he cleared the field he heard gunfire. He turned his head to see two French Nieuports diving on him. One of them fired, but missed. The rest of the Schwarm was now in the air and a confused furball was starting to develop. Zygmunt had his hands full with one of the scouts when his engine began to cough and spit. He didn’t need that now. The motor was still holding, but he could feel the reduction in power. He just needed it to hold out for a few more minutes. The Nieuport was now on the defensive. Zygmunt was pumping it full of lead and finally the Franzose went down to crash into the field below. It didn’t take long for Ziggy to put his machine down as well. The oil was all over the windscreen by that point.

YouTube Link

After making his report and filing the claim, Zygmunt was invited into the C.O.’s office. When he came in Wendler asked him to close the door and sit.
“- I have good news.” Ernst Wendler announced as Ziggy was making himself comfortable on the hard, wooden chair in front of the desk. “- I just received a telegram that a close by squadron is in need of a commanding officer and the HQ asked Jasta 17 to step in.”
“- Congratulations, Herr Fürher!” Zygmunt offered to shake his C.O.’s hand. “- I am sure you will do well there. Who will you leave in command here?” Truthfully Hahn wasn’t glad to see his C.O. go. He will miss the man.
“- Nein, Zygmunt. It is not me who is being transferred.” He paused. “- It is you. The HQ noticed your efforts and successes in the air, despite all the denied claims.”
Ziggy was speechless. He’s jaw was hanging and his pupils were trying to find something on the ceiling - his way of processing things.
Wendler continued, “- They caught me by surprise. I’m sorry Hahn, they didn’t even give us enough notice to prepare a going-away celebration. They want you there schnellstens (posthaste). They have sent a staff car to take you there as soon as you can gather your things. We can arrange to send the rest of your belongings later.”
“- But ...”
“- I’m going to miss you. Now go get ready. Off you go. Hals und Beinbruch!”

Fullofit, your own command! Congratulations. Well deserved Sor!

Leutnant Ivan Immer
Roucourt, Jasta 12
Sept. 12, 1917

Ivan would lead an escort flight at first light. The craft to be escorted were Rumplers. They were to bomb Nurlu. It would be a long flight. Cloud and rain would not make the flight any better. As they made the rendezvous point, Ivan wondered how he would ever find the Rumplers. He could not see anything. They circled for 20 minutes and Ivan decided to go to the lines at Cambrai and see if he could find the flight. As they neared the lines he saw a fight ahead just over the lines and dove to engage. Just when his flight was close enough to make out what was what, Ivan was almost sick to his stomach. The two Rumplers were falling in flames. They had arrived just in time to see them slaughtered. He dove on one of the Nieuports and damaged it. He was sure it went down but could not dally around with so many enemy planes about. They disappeared quick. His flight wisely made it back over the lines And headed home.

When Ivan landed he filed his report and quickly found a spot by himself. Schobinger came over and sat down. “Why the long face Derr Wolfe?” He asked. Ivan did not look up. “I failed today. I got those 4 men killed.” He stated flatly. Schobinger sighed. “Hold your head up boy!” he said. Ivan jerked his head up to face the man. Schobinger continued. “They could have waited at the lines to see if we showed up. We could have seen them by some miracle in that soup. Hell, they could have ended the war yesterday! But, they didn’t. Now get some coffee and something to eat. There will be men to lead in a few hours, and if you don’t get your head right, you just may get them killed!” Ivan straightened in his chair looking at Schobinger “Yes Sir!” he said.

At 1400 hrs. they were off to patrol friendly territory. Ivan had not risen to 1000’ before he heard The AA guns. He snapped his head back to see an enemy machine on his tail! He pulled up and rolled over. 2 Dh4’s had caught them napping. One of the D4’s made his pass and headed for home. The other was a bit late and the next flight taking off behind Ivan’s shot him down. With nothing else around, they regrouped and started to climb to altitude. At about 6000’ Ivan saw 7 specks above. They kept going East but he kept his eye on them. Sure enough, they dove to come up behind the flight. 7 on 4. This should be interesting. The next instant, Ivan was circling with 2 of the Englishman. He damaged one and it disengaged. A few revolutions later the second disengaged. He scanned the skies and saw nothing. “Time to call this show off” he thought. Nearing Roucourt he saw a fight at low level. While intent on joining the fun tracers whipped past his machine. The Camel overshot and Ivan hit it with a telling burst. His second burst sent it to the ground. It was all over in minutes. Poor Elsman, a new pilot, was killed.

That night he learned all three of his last claims were confirmed and he wphad been promoted to Leutnant! Schobinger was the first to congratulate him. “Thank you for your words this morning Sir. I needed to hear that.” He said. Schobinger nodded with a smile.

Sept. 13th.
The next morning they were to patrol the lines from Lens to St. Vaast. It was cloudy again. As they approached the lines they ran head on into a flight of Nieuports. Ivan got on one and never let go. They twisted down to 1000’ with the damaged Nieuport trying everything to get rid of Ivan but it was no use. Finally, after 800 rounds the Nieups burst into flames and tumbled to the ground. Ivan pulled up, low on ammo and no one around so he headed home. He filed a claim even though he had no witnesses in his flight. The ground observers and the balloon in the area should have seen it.

In the afternoon was another escort mission. Rain and cloud again. This time, Ivan found them and stuck to them like glue the whole way.

MFair, that is always a gut punch to see your charges going down in flames as you arrive. I blame the HQ for being so shortsighted and letting them go on their own at all. Escorts should meet up further away from enemy activity. The victory is so much sweeter when you get to shoot down those responsible for the bomber demise. Good going with those Camels.

13 September, 1917 13:20 afternoon mission
Ceurne, Flanders Sector
Jasta 36
Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM
41 confirmed kills
Awaiting two claim confirmations

It only took half an hour to travel the 20 km route from Wasquehal up north to Ceurne where Jasta 36 was stationed. The aerodrome was situated on the north bank of River Lys. It would be an easy landmark to follow if one gets lost. Zygmunt knew very well it may happen to him on occasion. The car pulled up to a building that at one point used to be cream coloured. It was a sad grey now. When he got out there was a small gathering of pilots across the court in front of the Kasino. They were relaxing between missions. Drinking Schnapps, smoking cigarettes, playing card games. They were mildly curious of the new arrival. Ziggy immediately spotted the flash of blue on the collar of one of the men. He knew who that was. This was “Circus Bülow” after all. He gave him a curt nod and the man returned it.

[Linked Image]

There would be time later to meet all the men. Right now he needed to settle in and get right to work. A short man came running to meet him.
“- Leutnant Müller.” He saluted. “- We’ve been expecting you.” The Adjutant guided Ziggy into his office. As they walked into the building, Zygmunt noticed a girl sweeping the floor. She was attractive and looked only slightly younger than him. She kept her eyes on the floor but he was certain she stole a glance when he wasn’t looking. He’ll have to make sure to ask about her. Hahn walked into his office. A cramped room, occupied mostly by a desk. There was a stack of papers sitting on the floor in the corner. A blackboard hung on one wall with today’s roster. He noticed a mission was planned to start in two hours. Plenty of time for him to meet some of his men, mechanics and his new plane. The window in his room faced the airfield. He could see all the machines lined up. All of them had their noses painted periwinkle. He wanted to see them right away and inspect the one he would be flying. He may even take it for a spin today it time allows. They went down to the hangars and Müller introduced him to his chief mechanic. The man looked very tall and thin. Almost malnourished with bony cheeks and deep shadows where his eye sockets should be. Feldwebel Blasen looked scrawny and week but his handshake was firm, his voice loud, almost thunderous and his movements spritely. Hahn wondered how else this man could surprise him. He didn’t need to wait long for the answer. Blasen took upon himself to “improve” his new C.O.’s fighting machine. As he explained it, he slightly lengthened the piston connecting rods, thus increasing compression ratio and adjusting timing of the valves. The modification should increase the torque slightly allowing Ziggy better climb rate. The Feldwebel then proceeded to fire up the engine and implored Zygmunt to listen to its “music”. It sounded to him exactly the same as any other engine. Perhaps he didn’t have the ear for it? Nevertheless he congratulated his mechanic for a job well done. It was then that the bell started to ring. Enemy planes were incoming. Zygmunt was quickly harnessed into his machine, the engine already warm. He gave instruction to have the rest of the flight ready as soon as possible and follow him.
A flight of Camels descended on him after a hurried take off. Ziggy fought one with a large white letter “G” on the top plane. The Camel was a better machine and continued to evade Hahn’s guns. Zygmunt had to employ some risky maneuvers to keep the enemy off his back. At one point, after doing a loop he was so close to the ground he was sure his wheels touched the tips of the grass blades. By now the rest of Jasta 36 was taking care of the invaders. He could see the quality of his new wingmates. They gave the Camels no quarter. Camel with “G” was lost in the confusion of the intense furball and Ziggy latched on to another Camel with a large “A” painted on the top wing. Together with another wingman they began chasing the “A”. They were flying side-by-side, each man concentrating on the target. Hahn was aware of his wingman getting close. They would surely collide if Zygmunt hadn’t fired and made his wingman aware of his presence. He knew he couldn’t see him. Hahn was flying lower and was hidden from view by the fuselage. His wingman immediately took evasive actions and Ziggy could finally concentrate on eliminating the threat. The Camel went down west of the aerodrome, crashing into a field.

YouTube Link

Zygmunt brought his mount around and headed for home. He could see another pair still battling over the aerodrome. Flak exploding around them. Ziggy was flying on an intercept course and managed to swoop in behind the hostile machine. He thought it was his initial foe - the “G”, but after closer inspection he realized it was an “O”. It didn’t matter. He was behind this one and fired madly. The Camel squirmed but to no avail. He went down near Ceurne. Hahn gathered his men around and ordered to land. They all did one after another. It was baptism by fire for the new C.O. The paperwork will be much more difficult.

MFair - You've taken to the screenshot thing with the zealousness of the new convert. Excellent pics. I particularly like the Caudron. Close call with that collision. Scary stuff especially with the horrible WOFF sound effect. Good job landing the Alb after all that. Tough deal those Rumplers getting smoked like that but they should have waited for escort. Belated congrats on the Iron Cross, and the promotion Herr Leutnant! 3 claims confirmed to boot. How many now?

Raine - Mein Gott! Vogel is wounded again an nearly gelded. Not good. "Could have gotten me higher up," indeed. I knew Steinmesser would develop some nefarious scheme for dealing with the insipid Major. A well crafted story. I can hardly wait to see it all unfold. I'm shocked that he's suborned a member of the clergy. Brother Bernard's soul is clearly in peril. Four in a single patrol. Impressive. How only two were confirmed I have no idea.

Lou - Not liking the breakup of Freddy and Thomas. I fear no good will come of this depite the Major's very logical decision. Nice work on the Triplane. How on earth did that bullet go right thought the center of the windscreen and miss Freddy. Fortuna smiles on young Abbott. Freddy smiling back was a bit shocking but bad orthodonture and a Neanderthal brow ridge beats a weak chin any day. <Must resist English teeth joke here....> Triple Ace!! Congrats. Moving up fast. Excellent pic of the downed Bristol and the 3 funeral pyres.

Lederhosen - That's some rotten luck for Willi and for you too with some hard earnend flying time just sitting there. A very nasty variant of the trademark 'two weeks.' Time for a hospital adventure perhaps.

Carrick - Zut alors! Ze Blasted Boche gave Senard a real shellacking and the claims staff did the same to poor Marcel. C'est la Guerre but an outrage nonetheless.

Fullofit - Such naughty thoughts you have about Oliver and the nurses. Does the image of a menage in the huge Corbie tub still linger?. Again with sunset/rise shots. Lovely, artful even. I must catch up or it'll be a Winter Solstice pic soon. When did Ziggy get the purple paint job? Or is it blue? It does look like the blue max enamel color. Did I miss the big reveal? Ziggy goes north of 40 kills. Some nice flying there. Well done and now he gets to lead his very own Jasta. Let no good deed go unpunished. Congrats!

À la Recherche du Temps Perdu - Part 22 of many

4 August 1917

55 Casualty Clearing station
Tincourt, France

My fever broke this morning and I’m lucid now. I learned that I’m at 55 CCS (!) in Tincourt. How ironic that they should be the nearest Casualty Clearing Station to my landing spot. I nearly laughed out loud when the orderly told me. So busy since London. New Squadron, new command, new aeroplane and few idle moments to think about Eliza. I’m almost relieved she’s in Rouen and not here. It’s all too close and the wound of our parting still raw. No point in writing about how I feel. I need time to sort things out.

[Linked Image]

The past few days flow together as a continuous fever dream...

I feel weak and my chest hurts. The metal splinter did considerable damage to the pectoral tissue but didn’t hit anything vital. Gas gangrene remains a concern but less so with each passing day. The wound continues to drain, and the nurses flush it with Dakin’s solution several times a day. Unfortunately, the surgeon didn’t keep the metal so the only souvenir I’ll have is the long scar across the left side of my chest. A ribbon row of stitches courtesy of Kaiser Bill’s Flak Batterien. The doctor says I should soon recover full use of my arm but for now it’s in a sling. He was very complimentary of the suturing in my scalp.

“Superior work. You were fortunate to find such a skilled surgeon,” he said.
“Surgical nurse actually,” I replied. I didn’t mention that it was Eliza, but I think he knew.

[Linked Image]

Tincourt is more of a temporary camp than a fully mature CCS. Wounded are everywhere. One of the orderlies told me they admitted 1000 men in the last month. I don’t doubt it. I’m stable enough to move now. Tomorrow morning I’m on the Ambulance train to No 10 Stationary Hospital in St. Omer If the wound turns septic, I’ll get shipped to England. Can’t allow that.

This evening, just before sunset, the ward sister allowed me a walk around the grounds. When it came time to return, I promised her I’d behave myself and not stray from their garden, so she let me alone for a time and went back to the wards. I’ve always loved this time of day. The long light and shadows of a summer evening danced about the garden. Amazing how the Sisters plant one wherever they go and somehow make the time to tend it. The flowers were in the full growth of mid-Summer, the fragrance of lavender impossible to ignore. I couldn’t help but think of Eliza. Lavender, jasmine, and something else... as I turned the corner around the tall sunflowers, a solitary rosebush. While not an ancient vine like the one in Peronne, neither was this one newly planted. I stooped to examine it for some minutes.

Her voice startled me.
“It’s just a rosebush, Captain. There’s nothing magical about it, unless you like roses,” she said.

I stood up too fast and felt a rush of light headedness. Behind me, her face illuminated in the crepuscular light, stood the Matron. Seeing my unsteadiness she took hold of my arm.

“I still have that effect on you, I see,” she said, green eyes shining. “Time to go in now.”

We walked back toward the ward tents.

“Why do you smile so?” she asked.
“I’m wondering if I’ll remember any of this conversation.”
“I’ve no idea what you mean,” she said. I swear she was laughing but I couldn’t tell in the failing light.
“You would ask me of Eliza,” she continued.
“Did she speak of what happened between us?”
Some,” she replied. “We talked of ghosts when last I saw you. How fare yours, Captain?”

“Restless,” I said.

“They will continue to be, so too will Eliza’s. You can offer her no succor where she travels now. Whether or not she comes back to you, I cannot say. The best thing you can do for her is to stay alive.”

5 August 1917

Ambulance Train
Somewhere in France.

Last night the man next to me, gripped by some hallucination or trauma began screaming and thrashing about, his hands raised as if warding off an attacker. I tried to calm him, but my efforts only increased his agitation. The ward sister settled him down almost immediately. “Easy Tommie. It’s all right,” she kept saying in a calm soothing voice.

The ambulance train holds 400-500 men. It’s a hospital on rails and the medical staff life full-time on the train.

[Linked Image]

As an officer and a “sitting up / walking case” I have a more comfortable perch than the men packed into 3 tier beds in the other carriages. For many the rough ride is no doubt a welcome relief from the trenches.

6 August 1917

No. 10 Stationary Hospital
St. Omer, France.

Nearly a full 24 hours on the ambulance train. I’m now walking the Chapel Ward at No. 10 Stationary Hospital. The doctor seems impressed with the rapid healing of my wound. If no infection appears in the next two days, he may allow my return to the squadron.

[Linked Image]

One of the Sisters assures me she’ll remove the stitches from my scalp this afternoon. They itch like mad now. Little to do here but visit with my fellow patients, most of who are fresh in from the Ypres push. I try and stay occupied, but my mind drifts inexorably to Eliza. I cannot get out of here soon enough.

Epower - Thank all the WOFF gods, Oliver is still with us! A most intriguing collage to accompany your man's return to lucidity. And what's this, Matron has returned and with cryptic clues of Eliza? The plot thickens. Great old photos too.
As to Freddy and Tommy no longer flying together, neither is liking it either. And English teeth jokes would certainly be apropos in Abbott's case, and he would take them in stride. Truth be told he's likely already heard them all.

Fullofit - Congratulations to Ziggy, a command of his own! But no going away party? That's just not right. Great intro to his new outfit, and a possible love interest in the offing as well. And wasn't it thoughtful of King George to send Ziggy a welcoming committee too. Seriously though, some intense fighting there, and dangerously close to the ground.

MFair - Congratulations to Ivan are in order too on his well-deserved promotion to Leutnant. From his most recent conversation with Schobinger I believe Immer is going to make a fine leader. Of course his outstanding flying and fighting skills should help with that as well - three confirmed in one day! A tough break though on the loss of the new man. War is hell.

Robert - Always good to see you drop by. And to echo Fullofit's inquiry, (after seeing what he did there), when will you throw your hat in the ring?

Carrick - Thanks! As to Marcel's questionable math skills, he may be able to use those to his advantage when calculating his confirmed victories.

.

Two quiet outings for Freddy and his crew today with no Huns anywhere nearby that wanted to have a go-round. Word did come through from HQ on Abbott's DFW claim from yesterday, it being approved and bumping my man's current total to 16.

At this stage in my life I can hardly afford to throw my hat anywhere
For fear of revealing the sparse crop on my top 40!! It might deter some lusty ladies from taking a chance! biggrin

Actually I have a lot going until the winter sets in and really don't want to commit the necessary time to DiD. I hate starting something like DiD and not being able to participate regularly.

What free time I now have is spent browsing the threads and planning for winter mod projects. I suspect we will have our hands full with mod updates to making compatible with WOFF 2020.

Best Regards

The Baroness, my dear Carrick. The Baroness. Lovely pic there. I'd not seen that one before.

Quel dommage! Ze Luftstreitkräfte really have their tails up for Marcel's aerodrome and now a kill-stealing flight leader.

Robert Lindley opened his eyes, sniffed and wrinkled his nose. There was that smell again. Like wet dog. He looked around trying to find the cause. He sniffed the sheepskin of his flying boots. Nope, not that. What was it?

Yesterday had been rained off, and the pilots of C flight had spent the day drinking.
The first patrol ran into Albatri but without much result. Lindley was leading the afternoon patrol down to Menen and he hoped to do more damage.

As he walked across to the mess for lunch, an unfamiliar air mechanic saluted him. He returned the salute.
“Sir, why don’t you let your dog walk with you?” the enlisted man asked.
Stunned a little by the familiarity, Lindley stared at him. “I haven’t got a dog.”
“I’ve seen him sir,” the Ack-Emma insisted. “He’s been following you around. Always sits outside your hut of a night.” The mechanic frowned, “you could feed him better, sir. Always looks hungry.

“But he’s a faithful hound. When you take off he chases off after you and runs off the aerodrome. I think he would follow you over the lines if he could, sir.”

Lindley stared at the mechanic. “I don’t have a dog,” he told the man coldly. “Now get on with your duties.”

Lindley found what he was looking for. Two DFW 2 seaters over the lines near Menen. The Germans tried to run, but C flight had speed, height and numbers. Lindley smelled blood.

Out of the corner of his eye, Lindley saw the other Spads peel away and head westwards.

Why?

Suddenly an Albatros scout was on his tail. Bullets hit the frame of his solid machine with a thud. Lindley was unconcerned. The Spad was a tough machine. He turned in a sliding bank.

The bank threw off the Albatros. Lindley could see his flight fleeing for the lines.
“Thanks for the help chaps,” he frowned and pushed the stick left.

There was no change.

The Spad was still in the same steep diving bank, sliding to the right. In increasing desperation, Lindley heaved on the stick, but the ailerons would not respond. Only the rudder lurched him around and the elevator sickeningly increased his dive.

There was no hope to correct the dive now. Lindley could see the brown tortured earth clearly below him. And the hound.

The black hound was sat, calmly looking up at him as he stared in terror. He swore the creature’s eyes burned. He couldn’t look away.

He never looked away.

Oh No!. Another gone to the House of the Death God.

I'm very sorry, Maeran. Not how I was hoping for your return to DID. I was rather fond of Lindley.

No empty chairs. Get back at it and create another of your memorable characters

Epower, what a ride! Good thing this young buck survived this latest misadventure and is now romancing the Matron, or so she thinks. Hopefully he’ll be able to learn more about Eliza this way. I’m glad he is recovering this quickly. Few more days and he’ll be at it again. The punching bag will probably have to wait a bit longer.
BTW, I always have naughty thoughts about nurses. They definitely don’t include Oliver.
My friend, you need to catch up fast. You are way behind with your flying, recovering, romancing and reading. I recommend reading Ziggy’s entry from the 13th to get you up to speed about his new paint job wink

Lou, no party. Everything happened so quickly. I was actually surprised that a transfer to a new unit can occur between missions on the same day.
Congrats on that latest claim. 16 already. Another gong is on the way, I’m sure.

Robert, that is where you are wrong. Those lusty ladies adore a man who can throw his hat in the ring. If he can throw a hat there, what else is he able to throw in that ring? They all want to know and will get hooked that way. There is no glory gained without risk taken.

Carrick, you definitely need a SPAD.

Maeran, argh! Doggonit! There goes another one. RIP Robert Lindley.

14 September, 1917 06:45 morning mission

Jasta 36
Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM
43 confirmed kills

The Fee from the day before was denied, but yesterday’s Nieuport from the morning mission and one Camel from the afternoon scramble were now his.

Walter von Bülow-Bothkamp, the man he saw outside yesterday with the Pour Le Mérite at his neck was in his office. He offered to discuss any matters related to Jasta and his opinion of the men.
“- Walter, may I call you Walter?” Zygmunt asked. The other man nodded.
“- After yesterday’s performance I don’t need to ask anymore about the men. In my eyes every and each one of them passed with flying colours, as it were.” He smiled. “- I think you’ve kept them in great shape and it will be an honour to fly and fight along them.”
Von Bülow was in agreement and seemed to not mind Ziggy’s approach. He only had one request, that he’d be allowed to lead his own Schwarm.
“- Agreed.” Hahn had nothing against the idea. “- I’ll take Schwarm Eins and you will lead Schwarm Zwei, ja?”
The morning mission took them close to Diksmuide. They were to circle above the observation balloon and defend it from any attackers.
Ziggy was making lazy circles, following von Bülow’s higher flight. No enemy machines in sight. Just the three dots of Schwarm Zwei.
“- Three ... hmm, something must have happened to one of Walter’s wingmen. There were supposed to be four.” Zygmunt was lost in his idle thoughts while trailing the other flight. All of a sudden those three dots turned into ten! The enemy came out of nowhere. Hahn gave the signal and picked up speed. He was soon in the middle of the melee. There were Camels everywhere. He looked for anyone in trouble and he found one of the Albatrosen being followed by a Sopwith right away. He went after them and began to fire. Many twists and turns later they were near the ground chasing one another above the No-Man’s Land. Zygmunt was gaining on the retreating Englander. He was not going to give up this easily. Closer he came still. Just a little closer. Now! He unleashed a fury of lead and the Camel caught a fair bit of it. They spiralled lower still. With a few more volleys damaged Sopwith could not stay afloat and in the end smashed into a mound of mud. The dirt covered the wreck completely and Zygmunt began to climb, satisfied with the outcome of this duel.

As he gained altitude he picked up, one by one, members of his flight. They were now turning back towards the balloon when Hahn noticed a solitary Camel returning from the battle. Schwarm Eins gave chase across the mud and were able to catch the English plane just north of Ypres. Ziggy made short work of his latest target and after it went down, he was ready to return home.

The aerodrome at Ceurne couldn’t come into view any sooner. They were all spent from the recent fight and in need of rest, drink and food. All this was within their grasp. As they approached the airfield and were filing into a landing pattern something caught Zygmunt’s eye. Some commotion above. Was it Schwarm Zwei also this eager to return? He looked back to see Flak going off nearby. Were the boys downstairs mistaking them for the enemy? He then saw quickly moving planes coming their way. He noticed their tan fuselages. SPADs! They must have been patrolling this area and hoped to catch the Albatrosen with their pants down while landing.
“- Not today!” Zygmunt was ready for them and quickly latched on to one of them. Volley after volley went into the fuselage of this fast scout. With each hit the SPAD became slower and more sluggish. Ziggy knew he had him. Finally, his target took one final turn and then fell towards the earth like a leaf. It crashed near the aerodrome. There should be some souvenirs from this one. The fight was quickly over after that with the remaining SPADs beating a quick retreat. Schwarm Eins had neither the will nor the means to chase after them and they all landed promptly. They needed some rest before their next sortie.

Awaiting three claim confirmations

Their afternoon assignment was to patrol enemy front lines between Loos and Menen. While midway between the two patrol points they encountered a pair of Harry Tates near Armèntieres. Zygmunt was first in line and watched tracers whizz by from the rear gunner’s position of the trailing machine. He quickly dipped his Albatros under the two-seater’s fuselage and then climbed to stitch the bomber with his own fire. After his run he dove under the plane again and went for another go. As he was turning he observed the rest of his Schwarm take care of the R.E.8s. It went down and shed its wings soon after. It was Hahn’s turn to attack the remaining bomber. It was already in bad shape after the first pass. Zygmunt aimed and fired. The British machine listed to port and began a deadly spiral towards the earth. Zygmunt watched it disappear under one of the clouds trailing dark tail of smoke. The rest of the patrol was uneventful and the flight was able to return to Ceurne to relax in the Kasino.

Fullofit, great videos as always. I catch myself turning my head like I’m the one with TrackIR! As for the young lady in the office, remember the first rule of command. You do not ever get your pu...., well let’s say pleasure where you get your pay check! Leave it alone.
Epower, the intrigue continues! I do wish you and Carrick would stop with the Baroness. It is killing me concentration. Great description of a hospital.
Maeran, another one falls! Rotten luck that.

Offstv Ivan Immer
Jasta 12
Sept. 15, 1917

The Jasta had scrambled the afternoon before. As they took off bombs exploded on the field. Ivan could see 9 specks above. They caught the RE’s near the lines and sent 2 down. Ivan’s machine was damaged by a very good rear gunner but all seemed ok. Over Roucourt while returning, a Nieuport went past below chasing an Albatros. Schobinger and Ivan dove on it and sent it crashing near the field. There were 4 bullet holes inches from where Ivan had been sitting in the cockpit and upon closer examination, two in his flight coat. To add insult to injury, all three of his claims had been denied. He would stay at 14 confirmed for the time. Ring.

As his flight took to the air for a patrol of their own fields near Roucourt, Ivan was still a bit miffed at having all three claims rejected. It was just enough preoccupation for some Nieuports to ambush them. Tracers went by his machine and he dove, turned, and pulled back up to find a Nieuport right above him firing at an Albatros. Just as he was about to fire, an Albatros passed over him so close he felt he could have touched it. He grabbed on th the tail of another when tracers hit his machine again. He went into a spin and when he came out the bullets hit him again. This time a searing pain in his leg made him nauseous. He knew he was hurt bad and looked for a place to land in his addled state of mind. His antagonist was still hitting him over and over. His machine hit the ground hard and came to an abrupt halt and spun around as the undercarriage broke loose. Lucky for him, a group of soldiers saw the crash and dragged him out of the busted Albatros.

Note: not that I wanted to land in the hospital again but it comes at a good time. It’s time to put a crop in the ground and this child will be away for a few weeks so it worked out perfect. I’ll be checking in on you folks from time to time so stay safe healthy.

MFair, ouch! Not you too. Me thinks you like the hospital atmosphere. All those nurses floating around, nursing, attending to your every whim. What a life!
Good luck spreading your seed. I hope I’m allowed to say that ...
As to Ziggy, I don’t think he’s aware of that proverb. It probably hasn’t been invented yet. So, he’ll have to learn this lesson on his own.

Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM
46 confirmed kills

Both Camels and Harry Tate were now confirmed. The SPAD over the aerodrome went to the Flak batteries. Some things never change.

In the morning Zygmunt led his Schwarm to intercept enemy planes on their way to attack a troop camp near Halluin. They arrived just in time, a flight of Camels was getting ready to do some damage. In the ensuing melee Hahn has picked up two of them on his tail and had his hands full. The Englanders worked well in tandem, but shooting them down wasn’t Zygmunt’s plan. He only needed to keep them busy while the rest of his flight took care of the rest of the invaders. The battle was exhausting. Zygmunt was looking behind him as often as ahead. In the end the Camels had to withdraw without causing any damage to the troop camp, or even downing this German ace. He watch them scurry across the No-Man’s Land and back home. He gathered his pilots and returned home as well.

In the afternoon the orders were to defend an observation balloon near Diksmuide. The skies above were clear. It was the ground fog that spoiled that perfect view for Ziggy. He knew the enemy would most likely approach under the cover of this mist. And that’s exactly what they witnessed. Two Nieuports were attempting to sneak up under the cloud cover to take out the balloon. Zygmunt was all over one of them in an instant. His aim was off for some reason and it took copious amounts of lead to bring the plane down.

Then the second one came into view and appeared to be wounded. The prop was motionless. The Flak batteries must have done something right for once. It was just a matter of time before Ziggy sent this Nieuport down. After that, they all went home. Ziggy was in good mood and when going back to his office to shuffle some papers, he passed the girl he’d seen before sweeping the floor. This time she had a feather duster in her hand. Zygmunt smiled at here, but the girl pretended not to see him. This was going to be a tougher nut to crack than he’d ever imagined.
