I simply cannot fathom the sheer amount of junk mail (unsolicited advertisements) that still gets sent out via the standard mail service. I'm convinced that this is all part of some kind of business arrangement to keep postal workers employed because I seriously doubt most businesses are getting much out of the traditional mail-in advertisements anymore in our internet/digital world. I'm speaking only for the US of course. Perhaps the volume of "junk mail" is much less in other countries.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.
I agree with you there PM..sometimes all I get all week is junk mail..I'm even getting credit card offers,,AARP offers for my girlfriend who passed 6 years ago..I make a monthly donation to the Wounded Warriors Project and seems like weekly the DAV and other Veterans organization send me a request..Add to that the robo calls I get that are supposed to be block for stuff like cat warranties,,I haven't owned a car for years..There's someone who says they are a travel agency and saw I've booked cruises with them in the past..Their number shows up as a New Concord number,,There are no travel agencies in N.C...Glad I have caller ID on the TV and only answer it for three of my grand kids..might be better just to put the recycle bin in front of the mail box,,Only mail I want is the store ad down the street,,I do all my bill paying on-line
I took the option to 'opt-out' from junk mail, yet I still get the occasional unsollicited brochure. Not only is it illegal, it also convinces me to never, ever buy anything from that store. When confronted, I get the "bad publicity is also publicity" line.
On average, the inhabitant of my city gets 5kg/11lbs(!) of junk mail each week, and plans are to put a city-wide ban on it for environmental reasons.

Yup, that's just one of several reasons that came to my mind when I realized just how much junk mail still gets mailed out. It's just a massive waste of resources that generates very little benefit with the exception of the postal worker job security I previously mentioned.

The majority of 'snail mail' we get now is junk, recycled without a glance, as most of my domestic business and transactions are online. This is in a rural village. Daughter in London gets swamped still due to turnover of occupants in a house of multiple occupation and local businesses desperate for custom. Back in the heyday of junk mail, a cistomer who had one of the mailing companies that proliferated then (pre-web times) said a good result from a mailshot was 0.3%. Such a waste of paper and resources. Most of those companies are gone now.

Still a ton of it in Australia as well, despite the no junk mail sticker on our box. We also get the local rag delivered to a random spot on the front lawn via car window launch every week.
Emptied my Box today, after 5 days. About a pound of junk...seriously, NOTHING I wanted.
It'll keep the USPS going long enough that Bezo's can get richer off it.
