The last major german warship from WWII has been found.

The Karlsruhe has been located outside of Kristiandsand in Norway while doing underground cabling work.

The ship was damaged by two torpedos by the british submarine Truant on April 9th 1940, and sunk that evening by the germans as they deemed her unsalvagable.

Karlsruhe was an old light cruiser, the Köningsberg-class from the late 20s.
The wreck was found on the 30th of july 2020 at a depth of 490 metres (1,610 ft), eleven nautical miles southeast off Kristiansand.

Pic is a screengrab from a video showing the sonar model of the ship.

How absolutely amazing the condition of that ship (by sonar) after all this time.

I used to vacation maybe 15 miles from that point, going boating that way with my dad. There was a German bunker on the coast not far from that position too. History came alive when I walked through it. That is really neat; a new generation of youngsters can imagine and relieve the awe and fear of those times seeing this.

She does look in great condition. Those offset rear turrets make her very recognisable.

Just out of interest, one of her sister ships, the Konigsberg was sunk the following day (April 10th).

Not a lucky name for a ship. While en route to attack the shipping lanes to Barbados on 4 November 1914, a spontaneous internal explosion destroyed the ship and killed the majority of the crew. The survivors used one of Karlsruhe's colliers to return to Germany in December 1914.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Uh. You've posted pictures of the 1927 year Konigsberg class Karlsruhe, while talking about the 1912 year Karlsruhe class Karlsruhe... Intentional?

Did you miss the part about being an unlucky name?

No, but why not illustrate the unlucky name with the 'unlucky ship'?

The four funnelled 1912 cruiser?

Because it is not the one that was found. I guess it is confusing showing the photos of the one found off Norway before it was sunk.

Ice Cold in Alex or Eating in ...
Not just that one sunk, but the 1916 version was scuttled in Scapa Flow June 1919.
