Well, I don’t know about Christmas being cancelled, but a quick visit to see your nurse would have been possible, I guess.

5 September, 1917 04:45 morning mission
Wasquehal, Flanders Sector
Jasta 17
Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM
36 confirmed kills

All claims except one from each mission have been ... confirmed. Four out of six wasn’t bad. It seemed almost unreal to have that many kills confirmed. What was going on? Ziggy wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Avesnes-le-Sec aerodrome requested some top cover and Jasta 17 rose to the occasion. The visibility was poor due to thick ground fog and the cloud cover was no better. Thankfully the enemy thought the same and decided to avoid the area.

5 September, 1917 11:35 noon mission

Jasta 17
Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM
36 confirmed kills

In the afternoon Jagdstaffel 17 was sent to protect the airfield at La Petrie.
Ziggy noticed them from afar. They were approaching Wasquehal as he was taking off. He shot the first one north of the airfield, as they chased each other at tree top level. The enemy plane nearly succeeded in landing his stricken machine, but overturned and disintegrated. Second was destroyed close to the aerodrome and the third was shot down in flames after escaping two of Hahn’s wingmen, just west of Wasquehal. For obvious reasons the airfield at La Petrie remained without top cover.

Sep 5, 1917.

2 Section put up 5 a/c amd 1 section put up 3 rovers for late afternoon patrol. My flight leader spotted and dove on 2 DFW types down at 3000 ft over a Hun AF. I stayed high and was doing a 180 turn as a Flight of Boche ( 6 e/a) came diving down after us and into the rovers. I only had one spot to fire on a hun that turned rolled and dove away as a Hun dropped on my tail. Spun out then dove for our lines loosing the boche in the cloud layers. Upon landing heard that we lost another Spad for 1
DFW a/c.

Fullofit, another nail biter of a video! You are stacking them up like cordwood.
Carrick, thats some tough going. Not a good feeling having that shark nosed Alb coming at you.

Offstv Ivan Immer,
Roucourt
Sept. 6, 1917

Immer arrived at Roucourt before nightfall on the 5th. He was met by Lt. Mueller, the squadron adjutant. "Ah! Herr Immer, we have been expecting you!" he said as he introduced himself. As they walked to the chateau which severed as the housing for the NCO's, Mueller continued. "I fear it will something to see tonight at Kasino. Obltnt. Vogal has claimed his 39th victory today!" Immer had not said much as he was taking in his new surroundings but replied, "Im not surprised. He seems a very capable pilot." As they entered the chateau, Immer could not believe how well appointed it was. "How were you able to furnish this so well?" he asked. Mueller seemed to squirm a bit an said, "Well, we are not sure actually." He leaned closer to Immer and whispered, "It's best not to ask such questions" as he gave him a wink. Immer nodded in the affirmative and added "I never noticed them."

On the morning of the 6th Immer's flight had the task of escorting 3 DFW's to recon the lines near Cambrai. It was more horrid weather for flying. Rain and cloud. As they climbed toward the rendezvous point he noticed something high above and ahead. Suddenly 2 black balls of flame and smoke appeared and both started making a laze spiral down in front of Immer's flight. As they grew larger he could see it was two Coudron's. Immer could not believe the enemy was still sending men up in such inferior machines. He almost felt sorry for them. After meeting with the DFW's, Immer was doing his best to stay in position with all the cloud and the wind bouncing the flight around. As he did a quick check he noticed a lone aircraft coming down from behind through the clouds. He did not recognize the machine but there was no doubt about its intentions. He immediately pulled up and was instantly in a fight with a very good Englishman. The machine was a type he had heard of but had never seen. An SE5. It was every bit as good as he had been told. The two twisted and turned, neither getting an advantage. The two machines went lower and lower in the turning fight. They finally ran out of air and it was the SE who made the mistake. Immer was on his tail in an instant and sent him down to crash in NML. He decided to go back since his flight was long gone. Just before Roucourt he noticed his engine was overheating. He throttled back and made a quick approach. Coming in for a landing the engine finally seized. At the same moment, Immer realized he was coming in too fast. He sideslipped as much as he could but still went way past the end of the field. Not a good impression for his first landing at his new home. The shaken Immer got out of his machine.

His flight came in later and Schobinger was surprised at what happened to Immer. It seemes no one in the flight had noticed the attack! "It did happen fast" had been Immers reply. At 3 in the afternoon they were up again on escort duty. There was still cloud but the sun would tease them on occasion as it peaked through the clouds. As they turned on their first leg of the escort patrol tracers flashed by Immers machine on the left. He immediately banked right and climbed. The flight had scattered like quail and Immer could see two Spads at least. He dove on one and the Spad tried to turn fight with him. Immer got in a good burst and the Spad disengaged. Schobinger showed up and both of them took turns attacking the fleeing Englishman. He could not use his speed as he had to keep avoiding one of the Albatri while the other got in position for an attack. Immer finally found himself right on his tail and with a long burst the Spad went to the ground. As he climbed up he could not find Schobinger. He started to climb after getting back well on his side of the lines and started to circle. He was surprised to see a machine above and before he could recognize it, It dove for the attack. It was not a fair fight and the outclassed D5 quickly made a break and sped home. Being low, Immer decided to let it be. Coming back low over his trenches someone sent a bullet through his machine. Da#@d idiots!" He decided to call it a day and turned south. Checking behind he saw two machines in a fight. He turned and climbed. The two machines were fighting directly over Houbourden. By the time Immer arrived, it was over with the Nieuport heading west. He was to far to catch and the idea was forgotten. All of a sudden, Immer felt utterly exausted. He decided to land at Houbourden and was surprised to find Schobinger there. "Herr Immer! What a magnificent show! You countered that Spad all the way! Both victories would be confirmed. He now had 8 confirmed.

MFair - I'm sure you will. That was a rather inglorious send-off of Ivan from his old outfit, the ingrates. Things should be much better under Vogel's command. And number eight already? Immer's wasted no time making a name for himself at Roucourt. Brilliant screenshots, particularly the one with the twin smoke trails.

Carrick - Trading one of your outfit's planes for one of theirs is going to drag out this war even further.

Fullofit - Four out of six confirmed? Wowzers! Ziggy's gotten on someone's good side up at GHQ. And another stellar outing and performance for him as well. He should be catching up to Vogel in no time at this rate.

2 September 1917
St. Omer, France

It was a few minutes past ten in the evening and Lt. Frederick Abbott was walking back to his hut after dining in the mess and sharing a drink with some of the officers there. His G/O Lt. Thomas Yale had returned with the tender to La Bellevue two days before, taking with him 2nd Lt. Reginald Harrington, along with some needed mechanical supplies for the Ack Emmas. Frederick was waiting out the weather to fly the new Bristol home, the winds having picked up to near gale force around St. Omer on the 30th, not long after he had flown the Albatros, (and caused such distress for Captain Tillson). Torrential rains joined the wind on the opening day of September, turning the grounds in camp to a quagmire. While he'd been waiting out the storms, Abbott had checked on his mount numerous times as there'd been little else to do. He talked with the riggers about making sure everything was adjusted just so. He talked with the engine fitters and mechanics to verify that the Rolls-Royce Falcon was tuned up to the nth degree. He visited with the armorers about the Vickers and Lewis guns they'd fitted to the bus, and as he had time to kill he had the Bristol rolled over to the sighting range and checked the accuracy of the forward-facing gun himself. He also made sure a fresh, full belt was loaded as he did not want to run into the odd Hun patrol on his was back to La Bellevue without a way to fend them off. And, just before dinner, he'd had the tanks filled as the weather was at last clearing and he wanted to leave by first light tomorrow before the winds had a chance to pick back up, if in fact they were going to. The forecast was that they would not, but he wasn't taking any chances, he'd already been here two days longer than intended.

It was a pleasant evening, given there was a war raging not but twenty-some miles away. The young airman looked up at the large cumulus clouds that hung in the clearing skies, illuminated by a nearly full moon that floated well above the eastern horizon, as countless stars dotted the darkness of space far beyond. Suddenly, a siren blared, shattering the peaceful illusion. Air raid! Seconds later searchlight beams began stabbing up into the night, desperately straining to locate the aerial intruders. At the same instant Frederick suddenly remembered he had a plane ready and waiting to go and made a mad dash for the Bristol; no time to go back to his quarters for his flying gear, he would have to make do with whatever the Ack Emmas might have around the hangar. As he ran he began shouting to everyone he approached in the chaos, "Any of you stout fellows gunners? I need a gunner!" Head-shakes and negative responses were all he got in return. But just as Abbott was approaching the row of maintenance sheds a young AM came running towards him, "I'll fly with you Sir!"

"By Jove, you're one of the armourers that helped me out yesterday!" Frederick flashed his toothy smile in recognition.

"Yes Sir. Pengelly Sir."

"Well Pengelly my lad, go grab some drums for the Lewis and meet me over there!" Abbott pointed off to the hangar the Bristol was parked just inside of. "I'll have the boys roll it out and by the time you get back we should be ready to go up and give those filthy Hun rotters what for, eh what!"

"Yes Sir", the AM agreed heartily, "be back in two shakes!"

"Outstanding!"

It was barely five minutes later when Pengelly returned with two full ammo drums. The Bristol was now outside and just ticking over. Abbott was in the cockpit, checking the controls. The men in the hangar had scrounged up two pairs of goggles but nothing else in terms of flying gear.

"It's going to be a cold climb Pengelly, but we'll make the best of it won't we!", Frederick encouraged.

"Yes Sir, with you all the way Sir!" Pengelly shouted back as he was helped up into the rear office.

"Ever flown?" Abbott questioned as he brought the RPMs up slightly on the V-12.

"Once Sir, did alright with it. Kept my lunch down anyway."

"Haw! Good lad! You'll do fine!"

"I'll try Sir!"

Frederick gave the signal and the Bristol, still warming up, rolled out onto the field and then up into the hostile skies.

As Lieutenant Abbott brought the Bristol around and began the long climb, AM Pengelly readied the Lewis gun.
[Linked Image]

The intrepid pair circled the field while they alted up and as they did bombs began exploding in the airpark below them. The Hun had found their mark!
[Linked Image]

Searchlights frantically swept the skies, desperate to pick out the enemy in the darkness high above.
[Linked Image]

There! They had him, caught in the beams. Seconds later the AA guns began firing at the lone Gotha that now shown brilliantly.
[Linked Image]

Using the Bristol's superior speed and climb rate Frederick quickly closed the gap. The searchlights had lost track of the target, but Abbott had him now and began firing relentlessly into the massive Boche bomber in front of him.
[Linked Image]

He was beyond surprised when moments later the Gotha slipped over to starboard and began spiraling earthward. AM Pengelly opened up with the Lewis gun on the disabled Hun plane as Abbott followed it down several thousand feet, providing his makeshift G/O some excellent shooting opportunities. The Gotha was seen to crash about three miles east of the airpark.
[Linked Image]

The King's duo then alted back up and patrolled for another twenty minutes, but finding no other intruders, returned to the field. Upon climbing down from their mount both men were met by cheers as they each began slapping themselves about the shoulders, arms, and legs, and stomped around trying to get some feeling back into their frigid extremities.
[Linked Image]

Note: The airpark at St. Omer was indeed bombed on the night of September 2/3 1917, and Maurice Baring makes note of this in his book, "Flying Corps Headquarters 1914-1918". He states that three officers were killed when a bomb fell on the Depot Mess, and that there was actually more danger from falling AA shell fragments than there was from enemy bombs.

Another great episode with historical reference Lou. Outstanding! As for the screenshot, nothing brilliant on my part. The credit is all OBD, as you know. All I did was hit the button after I thought “Wow!”

Glad you enjoyed it MFair! And so true about the credit going to the devs. Our part in making such gorgeous screenies is limited to "click click click", which as you know could be done by a properly trained monkey. Of course then we'd have to clean frequently flung feces from the monitors, (there's an alliteration I never thought I'd see). biggrin

MFair, that’s much better. Eight kills already. I’m sure Vogel will appreciate that. Those SPADs are tough customers when their Hispano Suizas are in one piece. Once you nibble at them enough, they’re easy pickings. Well done to Ivan!

Thanks for the kudos Lou. If that rate could be maintained then probabilities are on Hahn’s side, but as you will see it isn’t always Christmas morning.
Now, as to Freddy’s latest adventure: Wow! A Gotha! That’s fantastic! I’ve always thought of them as these mythical creatures, like unicorns, but they do exist. They do! I wish they were a more common occurrence so that one could experience going after this terrifying monster at least once during their career, but unfortunately one has to be extremely lucky to be in the right place and at the right time to even think of encountering Gothas. That will be one tale Abbott will be recounting for the foreseeable future. Yale on the other hand will be crestfallen to have missed such an opportunity. Well done to Freddy as well.

6 September, 1917 05:45 morning mission
Wasquehal, Flanders Sector
Jasta 17
Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM
37 confirmed kills

Only one of Ziggy’s claims from yesterday was credited to him. Somehow the other two went unwitnessed.
Jagdstaffel 17 was ordered this morning to patrol the airspace over friendly aerodrome at Iseghem.
They must have been stalked for a while now. It was an ambush and a flight of French SPADs came down on them without a warning.
“- Scheiße! Where is Schwarm Eins?!”
Eins was supposed to keep an eye on them from above. It looks like they’ve gone sightseeing. Zygmunt had one of the Franzosen on his tail and was trying desperately to lose him. He managed to do just that and then even retaliate by firing some rounds into his fuselage. He was certain he inflicted enough damage to slow the SPAD down. As if in response the French pilot climbed and accelerated to leave Ziggy’s plane behind. Hahn followed the enemy being sure of his aim. It was just a matter of time. But the time passed with nothing happening. No smoke, no vapour trail, no propeller windmilling. They were now clearing the No-Man’s Land near Ypres. Zygmunt was about to give up and turn his mount around when he noticed the SPAD bank and begin to lose altitude. Hahn saw his chance and dove after the French scout. His plane began to shake in protest from the speed gathered in the dive. The German ace ignored it and concentrated on placing more rounds into his enemy. In the end he found it to be unnecessary. The pilot either bled out or lost consciousness leaving the controls to their own devices. The SPAD smashed into the ground close the destroyed city. Zygmunt was by himself. He turned east and slinked across the lines back to his base. He planned to claim this SPAD, but doubted anyone had witnessed his victory.

Wasquehal, Flanders Sector
Jasta 17
Oberleutnant Zygmunt Dolf Hahn EK2 EK1 HHO PLM
37 confirmed kills
Awaiting one claim confirmation

The plates in the Kasino were still steaming with half-eaten potato dumplings and beef stew. All of the Staffel was scrambling on the airfield. Their orders came in just a few minutes ago over the telephone. Enemy planes were spotted heading for the troop camp south of Bois d’Epinoy.
They arrived over the camp just in time. A formation of planes was approaching from the west. Flak erupting around the flight confirmed them as unfriendly. Zygmunt signalled to attack and put his Albatros in a shallow dive to intercept. He targeted the leader and as they came closer he could now see these were Gitterschwänze. This was the first time Ziggy has ever met this type of airplane in combat. He didn’t know what to expect. He was now in range and as he opened fire, his plane was hit. He immediately smelled petrol and knew right away he’s had it.
“- Psia krew!” He was more annoyed than angry. It just had to be his luck to get his tank punctured with the first burst. But, it was always better to have the tank pierced than his own hide. He can afford to leak the fuel - they were over friendly territory after all. At least he’ll try to take one of the bombers with him before he runs out. Zygmunt targeted the pusher closest to him and fired. He had never seen a bomber do what this one had just done. He was stupefied to witness the Fee make a barrel roll. He was certain it was not intentional and the enemy plane was going down out of control. He would try to shoot his wingman as well then, but his wingman was too far and Hahn would not be able to catch him. Instead he decided to make sure his “OOC claim” would reach the ground in as many pieces as possible. To his surprise the Fee was flying straight and level about 300 meters below him. That was one skillful Britisher. He dove after him, aimed and sent volley after volley into the enemy’s plane. He had to go around for another go. As he lied him up in his sights, the bomber banked hard and began to dive. That was when Zygmunt’s engine stopped. He was now gliding, attempting to catch his target, knowing well he had little chance with no power. He shouldn’t have worried. The next instance the enemy plane caught on fire. The terrifying pyre went straight towards earth breaking into pieces as the fragile trellis structure was consumed by the blaze. Hahn’s plane was next, albeit in a much better state, it was coming down whether he wanted it or not. Thankfully there was a section of a road free of trees and relatively level and straight. He made his landing without incident and was quickly picked up by the soldiers from the nearby camp, who witnessed the entire affair. His plane was quickly recovered and patched. He was back at Wasquehal before dark.

As expected, the SPAD shot down near Ypres in the morning was not witnessed by anyone and had been rejected, but the Fee in the afternoon raid had been confirmed by the grateful troops who avoided having their camp bombed.
Today they were saddled with balloon defence near Lens. They have encountered no enemy planes.

Lou, not only an alliteration bu it would make a hilarious video for WOFF. The chimp going berserk after his favorite pilot bit the dust!

Carrick, good one!

Fullofit, I think you will catch Vogel yet.

Lederhosen, those are two of the nicest skins I have seen. Excellent paint!

MFair - That would be hilarious!

Lederhosen - Willi’s personal livery is outstanding! Hope he enjoys the new mount.

Carrick - “Falling like Fees” , hee hee hee

Fullofit - A touch of target fixation methinks for your man Ziggy in that first encounter yesterday. He should know better than to get low and slow over enemy ground. It’s fortunate nothing bad came of it. And even when he’s losing fuel he presses his attack. A true fighter!
Now, I must state that I did do a smidge of mission editing in order to set up the historically accurate scenario for Freddy over St. Omer on the night of the 2nd. That being said, if it hadn’t been for those searchlights catching the Gotha in their beams I doubt Abbott ever would have found his target. Locating another aircraft up there in the dark, even one as large as a Gotha, is darn near impossible in this sim.

3 September 1917
St. Omer, France

“So on your own initiative, you took off in the middle of the night with an untrained armourer to act as gunner, and without proper flying gear for either one of you, to chase after Gothas?” General Hugh Trenchard, seated at the desk in his office, looked sternly at the young airman standing across from him as he asked the question. In another chair against the near wall sat Captain Maurice Baring, the General’s aide, taking copious notes.

“Yes General, the filthy rotters were nearly upon us and I felt the need to act quickly. I called out for a proper G/O but none were about, so when AM Pengelly volunteered I took him on - a stout fellow if ever there was one, by Jove, should receive a citation”, Lieutenant Frederick Abbott answered nervously but enthusiastically. “To the lack of flying kit Sir, there simply wasn’t time to gather any you see, apart from the goggles the lads in the hangar found for us - thank God.”

“Thank God indeed. You do know Lieutenant, that the Gotha is the most heavily armed bus the Hun have right now, don’t you?” Trenchard raised an eyebrow.

“Hadn’t given it a thought actually General, never went up against one before you see. I should have considered that - call to action got the better of me, King and Country and all that - sorry Sir, bally foolish of me.”

The General suppressed a smile at Abbott’s response. “Yes, well, foolish may be a bit off the mark Lieutenant - risky is more like it. And bloody courageous as well, you and Pengelly both. You can stand easy, Abbott.”

“Thank you Sir”, Frederick untensed his body as he flashed his large toothy grin.

“You took the fight directly to the enemy last night and your actions resulted in the Hun losing yet another aeroplane and crew. Well done. How did you find the anti-aircraft fire up there by the way?”

“Intense and indiscriminant. Had several vents in the Bristol from the shrapnel”, Frederick replied, then quickly added, “but to be fair to the boys on the ground, they couldn’t have known we were up there.”

“Yes, well, we’ve been discussing that very issue recently”, Trenchard stated with a tone of irritation. “The AA gunners claim that, even at night, they can easily tell the difference between an enemy plane and one of ours. I have yet to be convinced that is so.”

At this point in an effort to keep things on topic, Captain Baring interjected, “General, the Lieutenant here is the fellow who forced down that new Albatros late last month.”

“Is he now - well done. A useful bit of their latest technology for us to study.” Trenchard remarked approvingly.

“Thank you Sir”, Frederick beamed. “I got to take it out for a turn as well, spiffing bit of fun that!”

“Did you”, the General again raised an eyebrow. “And how did it measure up?”

“Not as slippery as she looks. Heavy in the controls - doesn’t roll any better than the Bristol - slower in a climb as well - and the top wing shutters to the point where you think it may go off on its own. Twin guns though, so a nasty bit of business there.”

“Hmm, good to know.” Trenchard pursed his lips and nodded slightly. “You’re quite the go-getter, aren’t you Abbott.”

“Haw! Me Sir?” Frederick laughed out loud. Suddenly realizing what he’d done, he quickly went on, “Good lord! Sorry General, my apologies Sir, meant no disrespect, I’ve just never been called a go-getter before.”

Baring stifled a laugh of his own as he quickly looked down at his notes. The General, silent for a moment, gave Frederick a reassuring smile as he stood and reached out to shake the young airman’s hand. “Well I say you’re a go-getter Abbott, so there you are.”

“That is most kind of you General, most kind!” The Lieutenant was gobsmacked as he shook Trenchard’s hand.

“You’re free to get back to your squadron now Abbott, I’m sure they miss you.” The General sat back down at his desk as he dismissed the junior officer.

“Thank you Sir, I’m anxious to get back”, he replied cheerily.

In his excitement at all that had just transpired, Frederick tripped as he was leaving the General’s office and ran squarely into the door jamb.

“You alright there Abbott?” Trenchard inquired.

“Yes Sir, quite - feet just got the better of me.”

As he closed the door behind him and headed down the hall he was fairly certain he heard laugher coming from the General’s office.

.

Note: The issue of the British AA crews being able to distinguish between friendly and hostile aircraft at night and Trenchard’s feelings on the matter are commented on at length in Baring’s book, and well worth the read if you can get your hands on a copy.

Wonderful stories gents. OFF subject ,but one I read a few years back . Concerned the S.E.A. War and the naming of Thud Ridge, publicly it was a forming point for F 105 Bombers. Among the Pilots its name came from the sound of a F 105 crashing into the ridge. Or WWI Camel pilots when finding out they were flying, said it was Hump Day.

Offstv Ivan Immer
Jasta 12, Roucourt
Sept. 7, 1917
Immer's flight was on the line early at 5am. Breakfast had been cancelled as incoming enemy machines had been spotted southeast of Bethune. As the flight took off, Ivan could not help but wonder at the beautiful sunrise coming over the horizon. As they neared the lines east of Bethune Ivan looked back and saw 2 machines from the following flight pull up with a Spad coming down on them. Ivan reversed and dove on the Spad as it was intent on another victim. He damaged it with his 1st burst and it disengaged and tried to flee over the lines. It was too late. Immer had him and sent him down between the trenches.

He started climbing to the east when he spotted a fight going on to the north. He climbed above the dueling pair, a Spad and Albatri, and then dove on the unsuspecting Englishman. He tried to disengage but again, he was too late. With a series of long bursts the Spad rolled over and crashed near Houbourdin on our side of the lines. As he entered the Kasino back at Roucourt, he shouted, "Is my breakfast still warm!

Shobinger came in to the Kasino with Vogel. Vogel saw Ivan and threw his arms up, "Ah! Derr Wolfe." As he was walking toward Immer, he was confused. "Beg pardon Sir? Are you addressing me?' he asked holding his coffee as he stood. "Yes!Yes! Herr Immer. Derr Wolf is what Schobinger has named you. He said you are like a Wolf among the sheep when the English show up!" Immer grinned, "I will take that as a compliment Sir." The three sat down to finish breakfast as the rest of the flight came in.
At 2pm they were up again. More inbound enemy south of Roucourt. It was a repeat of the morning mission. As soon as the flight reached the area, 4 Spads came down on the flight of five Albatros. Ivan climbed as they dove past. When one leveled out to get on the tail of his flight mate, he dove. His first burst damaged it as he could see pieces coming off the machine. The Spad dove west and Immer dove after him. For a moment, he thought he would get away but he noticed he was gaining on him. Just before reaching the lines, he sent it down with a long burst. It had been a busy day.
