Apparently it didn't work for mine. 40+ years later and he's still skinny as a rail (as is my sister - 5 and 7 years older...neither smokers, btw). I could never blame my weight problems on genetics...lol.

No need for all the fancy home workout equipment. A life cycle for the legs, several dumb bells in different weight, a straight bar and a curl bar with different weights that can be put on and taken off, plenty of discipline and eat the right food, one can lose fat and put on muscle mass.

I like my cozy home gym of free weights and treadmill, but it's really not necessary. I don't aspire to being anything more than fit and trim, and I can do this with body weight exercising alone.

We've just started going out early mornings to our local walking track (was vacant even before the virus), and tonight I'm setting up our new ankle weights.

As a kid I vividly remember seeing those silly body building/work out ads on the back cover of comic books. You know the ones! The one where a skinny guy gets beat up at the beach by some buff guy and the skinny guy's girlfriend gets taken away from him. Then the skinny guy starts working out and comes back and beats up the buff guy who took his girl.

I remember some old cartoons with a similar theme. I believe there was a skinny epidemic in those days, especially with the men.

My parents just celebrated their 63rd Anniversary, which is easy for me to remember because I was an accident born on their 10th. So they were married in 1957. I look at their b&w wedding photos in amazement. I knew my mom was thin (dad could do the finger touch around her waist) and that he was built, but most *everyone* in those pics were what we would consider skinny today. I doubt that in those days people complained about the BMI tables.

Books and books and books have been written on this topic but essentially two major things happened that changed the rate of obesity in the US,


1. Food prices compared to wages dropped. Food overall simply became cheaper due to the advent of industrialized agriculture.

2. Less and less people were doing jobs that required significant physical activity due to the trends of increased automation and other workplace efficiencies. Simply put, more people were getting office/desk jobs and less people were getting jobs that required a lot of physical activity.

Exercise for me is simply saddling up the pup and take a long walk sometimes if the weather is nice we do 5 miles..She's a miniature doberman so If I pick up the pace she has to trot,I do have a stationary bike for when the weather sucks ..Heck I'm 71 and don't expect to look like Arnold

For my exercise, I just do some basic stuff at home, like pushups, crunches, dumbbell work, things like that, then try to go hiking at some nearby trails at least a couple times a week. I typically do a 2-3 mile loop, with the first 1/2 mile being a downward slope, which becomes an upward slope for the return trip. I do a little bike riding too, but I need to do more.

It’s been so hot around here lately that I haven’t gotten out as much as I’d like - it’s hard for me to hike up a 1/2 mile hill when it’s 100F degrees...

What kind of humidity do you get? For me I've found that it can be 100 degrees but if the humidity is at 0% I'm ok for the most part.

It’s generally lower humidity, but for the past month or so, it’s been over 50%. My electric bill was 3X normal because it was so hot and humid out (it probably doesn’t help that I grew up in a colder climate). My girlfriend, who is a Southern California native, and never had A/C, spent the past month at my house because it was so hot and humid.

Your routine sounds solid, and more in line with what I'm wanting to be...simply fit and trim (also flexible), not jacked. Mainly I want to be strong with good endurance for my age but light on my long-abused feet.

As an older gent, this physique would suit me and mine just fine...
