Lots of articles repeating the same guesswork regarding AMD, Nvidia GPUs. So, no cut/pastes on the thread recently.

The first real information is due September 1 from Nvidia. Presumably, they will be describing their new GPU product's technical details. When they go on sale is still undetermined -- some say mid-September.

AMD Downgraded by Northland on Sluggish Data Center Demand in the Second Half of 2020 and the Possibility of Intel Adopting TSMC as a CPU Partner

AMD (NASDAQ:AMD 83.08 -0.87%) has received quite a boost following Intel’s epic stumble in the 7nm arena. .. the company has received a rare downgrade today from the Northland Capital Markets

Northland analyst, Gus Richard, downgraded AMD today from an ‘Outperform’ to a ‘Market Perform’ designation. The analyst also pegged a stock price target of $80 for AMD, corresponding to a 5.5 percent downside potential

Crucially, however, the analyst has also cited the possibility of Intel (NASDAQ:INTC 49.14 -0.28%) turning toward a partnership with TSMC in the production of its 7nm processors as a major contributing factor for today’s subdued prognostication regarding AMD.

AMD has already started work (designing new technology features) on 5nm and 3nm -- which will be made by TSMC. And TSMC is already has a 5nm plant making 5nm test chips to establish "how to make 5nm chips".

Quote
‘Better Yield on 5nm than 7nm’: TSMC Update on Defect Rates for N5

A manufacturing process that has fewer defects per given unit area will produce more known good silicon than one that has more defects, and the goal of any foundry process is to minimize that defect rate over time.

As it stands, the current N5 process from TSMC has a lower defect density than N7 did at the same time in its development cycle.

We'll see how things progress. But, right now AMDs future 5nm products seem headed in the right direction.

As noted above, Intel 7nm made in Intel plants has serious issues. Thus, Intel may go to TSMC for some 7nm chips -- but, we don't really know if they will or what chips those will be.

Nvidia is supposed to describe their new GPUs next Tuesday. Two or three models will be released during September, people are surmising based on some leaks.

Lots of guessing; but, the actual performance remains a mystery. The actual prices remain a mystery.

Meanwhile, AMD is expected to say "nothing" until they see what Nvidia has and at what prices.

That's 'Big Navi' that's just been made redundant then before it's been formally announced!

Even if the performance is as claimed and latency is negligable, they can still beat Nvidia on price. These new cards aren't exactly geared towards the budget gamer.

NVIDIA Announces the GeForce RTX 30 Series: Ampere For Gaming, Starting With RTX 3080 & RTX 3090

The first card out the door will be the GeForce RTX 3080. With NVIDIA touting upwards of 2x the performance of the RTX 2080, this card will go on sale on September 17th for $700. That will be followed up a week later by the even more powerful GeFoce RTX 3090, which hits the shelves September 24th for $1500. Finally, the RTX 3070, which is being positioned as more of a traditional sweet spot card, will arrive next month at $499.

Lots of power available. But, FPS remains unknown. Need the independent test results.

Traditionally, Nvidia has built its reputation on having the fastest FPS card -- regardless of price. I won't be surprised if that's still true. But, price matters. We'll see how AMD responds.

Report: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 GPUS To Be In Short Supply Until 2021

Here is the relevant extract from Anthony's report:

"But there is one story I wanted to sit down and make sure I wrote, and that was from an industry source who told me that post-launch there will be "no stock will be available till the end of the year". The first wave of cards is said to be small, very, very small -- possibly the smallest launch in many years...."

May or may-not be true. But, indications are that Nvidia Fans should act quickly when the cards hit -- assuming they wanted one of the first ones at the nominal "retail" price. Rumor is, the prices will rise quickly due to short supply. This is a FWIW industry rumor/leak -- not an Nvidia "knock".

They can easily beat Nvidia on price, especially as they now have the target numbers in order to undercut...... however price isn't the point regarding 'Big Navi'. AMD were promising big things after the other failures of Vega and subsequent cards.....'Big Navi' was promised to be the Nvidia beater, a premium gaming card that would put AMD back at the top end of performance. Let's be honest, we already know it's no better than 15-20% improvement over a 2080ti if we're lucky. I think there's a fair bit of truth in that people only want AMD to be competitive to bring the price of Nvidia cards down.

Based on leaks and logic more than one writer and some commenters guessing (for example):

Quote
" [Nvidia] Pricing seems to suggest to me that [Nvidia is] worried about amds offerings which can only be good news for us consumers!"

Wow, someone gets it!!!!
You are absolutely right and this needs repeating. AMD and Nvidia know's each other performance right now! And if nvidia had a clear lead, again, you would be seeing price hikes. But we are not. All Nvidia is saying right now is that they believe AMD cannot match their 3090 which is why they added $200 hike to it.

It seems that [AMD] RDNA 2 will surprise the lot this time in it's price/performance.

We'll see. Competition is good smile

We won't know about AMD's "Big Navi" until October. The published rumors are merely updated older rumors. For example:

Quote
AMD Big Navi and RDNA 2 GPUs: Release Date, Specs, Everything We Know

even without hard numbers from AMD, we have a reasonable idea of what to expect. The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 hardware announcements .. give us realistic ideas of where Big Navi is likely to land in the PC world.

Big Navi / RDNA 2 at a Glance

Up to 80 CUs / 5120 shaders
50% better performance per watt
Coming October 7 (rumor)
Pricing is unknown (higher than RX 5700 XT)

The very few items above are reasonable guesses -- not more. Amounts to nothing -- information wise.

Nvidia designers have started talking and indicated their goal was to "double" Nvidia GPU performance -- a very reasonable goal. One imagines AMD had a similar goal -- thus, 5120 improved AMD shaders, for example. That's it for now. Maybe AMD will "leak" some information during September.

Personally, I think Nvidia will keep its "fastest FPS regardless of price" crown with the top model. I expect competitive performance/price from AMD elsewhere.

One huge benefit (I hope) is that with RTX and RDNA2 launching around the same time, there should be much better availability of both sets of cards.

AMD Plants Big Navi Radeon 6000 Easter Egg in Fortnite

Fire up the rumor mill

Streamer GinaDarling found a teasing text stating "something big is coming to the AMD battle arena," after having to enter a passcode "6000" into a terminal to proceed.

So Big Navi will be an RX6000 series GPU (as expected). And, AMD has taken an initial small step in its "sales campaign" for the new GPUs.

As a happy 4K gamer (using AMD RX5700XT), I'm interested in what it would take to get good 8K eventually.

Nvidia Clears Up 8K DLSS Upscaling With GeForce RTX 3090

You didn't really expect native 8K at 60 fps, right?

Nvidia provided additional details on 8K gaming and DLSS, which is what we're focused on here.

First, let's address the elephant in the corner. To play games at 8K, you need an 8K display.

Meanwhile, the vast majority of gamers are still using 1080p displays, according to the Steam Hardware Survey.

Long Article

A long explanation of how 8K is not really 8K when gaming. And the issues the 8K gamer will face in getting simulated 8K. Would not matter if it was AMD or Nvidia -- but they focus on Nvidia's new cards.

Nvidia 8K requires Nvidia DLSS to provide simulated 8K. DLSS must be written into each Game's code -- fewer than 10 games support it.

AMD also has a current solution = RIS.

Testing AMD's new Radeon Image Sharpening: Is It Better than Nvidia's DLSS?
By Tim Schiesser on July 12, 2019

Radeon Image Sharpening is a broad effect that doesn’t require per-game implementation. It’s a simple switch in Radeon Settings.

There is a pretty big catch, though. While Radeon Image Sharpening doesn’t require per-game implementation or any [game] developer intervention, it currently only supports DirectX 12, Vulkan and DirectX 9 games

Bottom Line

Radeon Image Sharpening is genuinely impressive. It doesn’t require any developer implementation and it works well by sharpening the image which can be useful in a variety of situations.

Its the same for 4K gaming. For 4K upscaling Nvidia DLSS works in games written for DLSS. And, AMD RIS works with games written for DX12, DX11, Vulcan, DX9..

Last edited by Allen; 09/05/20 03:37 PM. Reason: Update: AMD RIS does support DX11

As usual, your AMD rose-tinted spectacles actually try to paint a different picture from what the article reports......I'm not sure why you repeat the headline of 'You didn't really expect native 8K at 60 fps, right?' when the 11 game benchmarks are displayed in the graph and yet 8 of them show games running at 8K natively without DLSS and at 60fps or over.

It should be pretty obvious you don't get 'real' 8k without a native 8k display and therefore it's absolutely pointless raving about DLSS and how 'simulated 8K' is such a limitation when you're talking about a card that can and does hit 8k @60fps natively.

You say you're interested in what it would take to get good 8K eventually....and there is your answer, the Nvidia RTX 3900 - the evidence is there, in the article that you linked to!

The thing is, you say you're a happy 4K gamer using an RX5700XT (a 1400p card) which averages 20-40fps in pretty much every game at a 4k resolution, so you can't claim that 60fps minimum is a requirement for contentment either. Sometimes the blind faith to a brand name really negates the text and the articles which you 'report' on! If you actually read the article closely, the real headline of the article is that 8K native at 60fps cannot be met without DLSS when raytracing is enabled. You can't claim that ray tracing is a requirement for contentment either because as an exclusive AMD gamer you're not even using it.

I link entire articles when they "say a lot" that others might interpret differently. I expected different interpretations. The main point of my post (to me) was to note that Nvidia has DLSS and AMD has RIS -- because some folks may not know much about RIS. I assumed Big Navi will have RIS.

Regarding where Nvidia 8K works "natively" -- from the linked article:

Quote
There are games where natively rendering at 8K is actually viable. They's the usual culprits: lighter fare like CSGO, League of Legends, maybe Overwatch. Nvidia also showed Apex Legends, Destiny 2, Rainbow Six Siege, World of Tanks, and World of Warcraft breaking 60 fps without any upscaling tricks, though it lists high graphics settings (i.e., not ultra), and none of those games support ray tracing effects.

Regarding RX5700XT at 4K: AMD advertises the card as a 1440p card. And, as you note, to get full fidelity graphics at 4K and ultra settings with RX5700XT, one must often be satisfied by a smooth 30FPS. Many of us are. I really "see" no difference between a smooth 30 and a smooth 60. But, I believe there are those with quicker responding eyes who really do "see" (not measure) a difference -- and need more FPS. Also those who compete against other humans need high FPS.

But, for those of us with "slow eyes" a "for example" from my game collection: Assassin's Creed Odyssey is one of the current high end graphics games. I play at ultra settings and widest field of view (exception 2x AA -- as in all my games -- I like the look better) at a steady, glitch free 30FPS. Those who need/want more, need a faster card. No question that Nvidia RTX 3090 is much, much faster smile
