Not sure which one of the end-of-the-war days I remember, but I just put my memories of it in the "This is What Happened" thread.
I just copied here to save you the trouble if you are interested:

"I don't think I remember it. I remember VE, or maybe it was VJ. I was four-years old, almost five.
I remember waking, dressing and going out of the room and seeing everyone gathered around a small fire in the common yard.

The grown ups were excited about something.
They had even started a small fire, and they were burning masks of devils and one of what I knew as a bad man with a mustache.
Even the old man who usually slept till noon was up and they were drinking something.

I know I didn't have to go stand in line to buy coal that day.
I don't know who went. But it was winter and the built-in stove used coal."

VE - May 8th
VJ - August 15th

So it seems more likely you were remembering VE day. (assuming you were in the northern hemisphere).

Comparatively speaking, "VJ Day" is largely a forgotten event.

Not for some of us.

Oh most certainly not but I was referring to the general public.

I know.

My father was a WWII Pacific Theater veteran. But just a few days ago on a Facebook group I follow, can't recall which one, some "youngster" posted a picture of his WWII veteran "great-great grandfather". Talk about your generational divide. My great-great grandfather was a Confederate Army veteran!

Time is indeed "the fire in which we all burn".

Hi Cy. It was in the Southern hemisphere.
The winters there were mild, no snow where I was, although it could be seen on the mountain top; definitely above 55 degrees F.

As a small detail, at that age I was probably acting as the male escort to one of the older girls when getting the coal.
It was not until I was about six that I was trusted to get the coal by myself.
