So, I have downloaded several images from the screenshots thread to use as desktop backgrounds, and an image from this post came up. Something isn't quite right about that Nieuport.

[Linked Image]

The fuselage roundel is British and the upper wing roundels are French. I scanned though the Skins folder with image preview on and found the following skins have mismatched roundels:
Code
off_Morane_L_ace_t_RNAS-1 1915_R A J 'Rex'_Warneford.dds
off_Morane_L_t_RNAS-1 1915.dds
Off_Nieuport_10C1_ace_t_Dover 1916_Stanley James_Goble.dds
Off_Nieuport_10C1_ace_t_RNAS-2 1916_Daniel Murray Bayne_Galbraith.dds
Off_Nieuport_10C1_ace_t_RNAS-3 1916_Stanley James_Goble.dds
Off_Nieuport_10C1_t_RNAS-1 1915.dds
Off_Nieuport_10C1_t_RNAS-2 1915.dds
Off_Nieuport_10C1_t_RNAS-4 1915.dds
Off_Nieuport_10C1_t_RNAS-5 1915.dds
off_Nieuport_12_t_RNAS-2 1916.dds
off_Nieuport_12_t_RNAS-5 1916.dds
off_Nieuport_12_t_RNAS-6 1916.dds
off_Nieuport_12_t_RNAS-10 1917.dds

I won't swear that's all of them, but they're the ones I found.

In addition, while watching roundels go by, I noticed the upper left wing roundel in this skin doesn't seem to be scaled correctly:
Code
off_Nieuport23_Lewis_ace_t_RFC-1 1917_Louis F_Jenkin.dds

Anyway, I wanted to report the issue here so that they could be put on a "to fix" list by someone (assuming they actually need fixing and aren't some historical thing).

P.S. There are about a half dozen SE5/SE5a skins without wing roundels at all (e.g. Off_Se5a-viper_t_AFC-2 1918.dds); but I assume that was a historical thing. It just seems a bit out of character for the brits smile.

Some if not all may be historical. I'll defer to Shredward on this. The Royal Naval Air Service, like the RFC, began the war using the Union Flag as a national marking. Roundels began to be adopted in late 1914, with the RFC reversing the French insignia by putting the blue ring on the outside and the red dot in the middle. The RNAS, however, went in 1914 with a two-colour roundel: a red outer ring and a plain white centre. Once the RFC formally adopted the tricolour roundel, the RNAS added a pale blue dot to the centre of their red-and-white roundel, essentially making it a French roundel.

That did not last long and by mid-1915, the RNAS adopted the blue white red roundel identical to the RFC. It appears that the skins may have been designed to represent RNAS aircraft during the transition. I did not think that the French-style roundel survived into 1916 so I'm surprised to see some of those roundels represented in 1916 skins.

Raine is on the right track.
Nieuports (10, 11, and 12) were delivered to the RNAS with French markings on the wings and rudders, and so they remained throughout their service (on the Western Front, essentially to the end of 1916 or in some cases, early 1917). As French built a/c carried no fuselage cockade, the RNAS added them, in British pattern and colours. All RFC Nieuports flew with standard British markings.
Cheers,

We will remember them.

I think this needs to be in the FAQ or a sticky as it comes up from time to time wink

Thanks Shredward. I learned something new, so it's not all bad. I still suspect the off_Nieuport23_Lewis_ace_t_RFC-1 1917_Louis F_Jenkin.dds top left wing roundel is wrong. The center circle is just completely out of proportion.

Sticky might have helped; but I certainly didn't think to look in the FAQ before posting this. rolleyes

@mandrews - I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it was done on purpose. Seeing it's the only skin that has that design, it would have been noticed immediately by Rob when he made these.

What I just found interesting was two other skins in the same squadron RFC-1... William Campbell and William Rogers. They have Techno looking numbers on their fuselages... in 1917? Looks a bit odd.

The Jenkin cockades are accurate.
