I don't know if its been covered here or not but I just stumbled upon this game in the works via Youtube. This looks promising and I've been hoping for newer age of sail games to come along. I really wish Naval Action would have had a single player game. Looks like it needs a lot of work and I'm not sure forty dollars is worth parting with just yet but its nice that it has early access on Steam.

Same deal, EA, price ect...

Both look good, but the asking price for a EA game is a no way for me.

They have been on my radar for awhile. Waiting for a sale or something...

Interesting Red. Hope they turn out good. I saw your other post linking to a Jane's Fleet Command type spiritual successor and by the info and I'm assuming screen captures that looks like it could be really cool. I wish Akella would make a totally new, from the ground up storm engine and next generation pirate/sailing RPG.

I have both. They are both fun. Good graphics and pretty realistic gameplay. Age of Sail is much more complete. I am playing through the British campaign now. It is heavily scripted, so unsure about replayability, but I am enjoying it. You have command of a small force of ships and Marines and carry out the orders you're given by your commanders. It is certainly challenging, and you have to pay to repair your ships and replenish your crews, so there's a lot of incentive to be careful. You can also upgrade your ships by purchasing better equipment or pursuing technologies. Ships captured can be pressed into your own service or sent to the admiralty for a prize. You can also purchase new, better ships (though I have not been able to afford it, yet).

Dreadnoughts is very cool and has a lot of potential. Engagement ranges are much more realistic than, say, World of Warships. You can play as many different factions. One really cool feature is that you can design your own ships. In its current state, you can basically just set up single battles and play them. The computer randomly creates classes for the ship types you chose for the battle (you can design your own, but not the others). I would prefer using real ship classes, personally. I tend to think this will be the case later in development. Ship designs start with the first dreadnoughts and end with 1945. It is early in development, so I am excited to see what it becomes.

Just thought I'd share, since I happened to have both games. Cheers.

I hope you enjoy Age of Sail. I'm interested to know your impressions of it. Unfortunately, I didn't care for Naval Action. What they market seemed to be very little of the actual gameplay.

Thank you, I havent done much with it yet, just got my feet wet to see how it is but I foresee enjoyment with UA: AOS, it does remind me of the mentioned Age of Sail II. I have put more time into Naval Action for now, although it´s another MMO, I like the detail it has. Iam in the Exam Phases which are hard for now but gives you a taste and basic formation of whats ahead. As with any MMO, the gameplay is what you make of it. There are some negative reviews, but most are usually due to a mayor wipe that was done before it went to full release earlier this year.

It was a toss between UA:AOS and UA:D, would have prefered UA:D but for now UA:AOS has more content and seems more polished. I will get UA:D once it hits Steam which is to be by the end of this summer. I´ll keep you posted on my initial thoughts with UA:AOS soonish. Thanks for your concern thumbsup

This is what I like about Naval Action, it´s detail in sailing and gunnery. Although there´s no manual sailing so to speak in UA:AOS, somethings can apply, or are of good knowledge...

Nevertheless a cool tutorial I think.

Yeah, that is why I bought the game. But once I started playing it, I spent all my time zooming around on the map trying to get to a ship where I would at least have a chance to survive if I ended up in a fight. I probably played it heavily for two full days and spent almost all that time in that map travel mode. It was at that point that I realized I didn't want to spend any more time playing the game. It was marketed one way, but was very different in reality.

I've played a few "age of sail" games over the course of my gaming "career" but ironically the most fun I've ever had was not with a naval simulator but with Total War: Napoleon. The naval combat modeled in that game was outstanding in my opinion.

Isn't that kind of weird to come out with a DLC while the game it still in early access?

I played a little of the naval warfare in Empire Total War and unmodded with maxed settings and the combat and water effects look great. I really wish someone would make an Akella style naval rpg but with a new engine and more immersive rpg mechanics and character interaction as well as solid sword and musket combat.

UA:AOS is in a Beta state I would say and the DLC seems to be free for early backers and I think it will also be free for everyone. My guess is there letting the early backers test out the DLC before it goes live. I would say they added the DLC to make the package more attractive for it´s price point.

I havent played TW´s naval combat, but from what I have seen on video it does look simple in concept, but that´s just my opinion. I see Naval Action as a more robust sailing and naval combat simulation then TW, but again that´s how I see it. It´s not even easy to get through the exams phase in NA, and there is a learning curve to be proficient with NA in the long run. All three games are quite different from each other, except from the fact of what era they represent. Being UA:AOF closer to TW, but at the same time a bit easier to play.

Yep Total War is pretty simple. At least Empire is. I'm not sure about the other titles in the series. Click here, move this way, fire now kind of thing but its fun for the ease of use and spectacle. I prefer a good balance though. I like something realistic with physics and that will teach me something about naval navigation and warfare but that is not so complicated that it is overwhelming. UA:AOS is looking good though. I would get Naval Action if it had single player.

In a way Naval Action does have "single player", it´s just that it´s on a open world server. On the server options you can either choose PVP, or PVE. You then choose what type of mission you want to go on, transport, huntdown, challenges, port battles etc. As I stated earlier, sandbox is what you make of it but the missions are there and your in a map with other players, be it PVE or PVP.

The game is very immersive, every time I play I can smell the sea salt biggrin It´s in-depth too.

Hope these help you get an Idea...

Michael Sharp has some great tutorials, he´s the man to watch on YT...

and then you have the RPG element that Naval Action offers...

It´s all about naval warfare and how you handle your ship/guns. If that´s what your interested in then the price of admission is quite worth it IMHO.

Ahoy!

It sure is a pretty naval sim which is what we've needed. Maybe when its a bit cheaper I'll give it a shot sometime. Since its an open server map, even though you can set it to PvE (I don't think I knew you could set it up that way so thank you for the info) I'm guessing it requires an always online connection?
