Melodically there's some crossover between Metal and Rock, but their themes are different. Rock is very sex heavy (and sometimes with heavy chicks..."Whole Lotta Rosie" ), whereas Metal (along with Progressive Rock and Punk) is not.
A good classic Rock song (think "More Than a Feeling", "Hotel California" and "Stairway to Heaven") gives you the warm fuzzies, like when your favorite girl falls asleep on your chest in a naked curled-up sweaty spent mess. Sleep comes quickly and deeply.
OTOH, Metal makes you want to go outside and bust your ass doing yard work.
I'm definitely going to harvest this thread for new songs!

Mark, I think your analogy differentiating Metal from Rock is brilliant!! I think I will save your post for future reference.
Speaking about themes, one thing that I absolutely LOVE about Iron Maiden is the fact that they would often sing about historical events and they even had a song about Dune (To Tame a Land)!!!!
Me being a hardcore science fiction AND history person, you can easily see the attraction.

AOR (Adult Oriented Rock) would proper Zep, Bad Co, Foreigner, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Heart and even Fleetwood Mac, to name a few. But, at the same time these bands fall into the Rock theme aswell. I still think all this tagging is a big mess that dosent make much sense for the most part, but hey the media had to put there icecing on the cake somehow.
From there Power and The Glory album (1983)...
Great movie by the way.

Interesting choice there since it's definitely not a popular/typical pick by fans.

Difficult to choose really, as I like them all, but for me, this album was ahead of it´s time, and captures what Rush could achieve. But again, almost all Rush albums are ahead of there time.
Second to is...
Not your conventional fan, I know

Unfortunately (musically anyway), I fell in love-at-first-sight with a chick who preferred being serenaded with a Dan Fogelberg song on a beat up acoustic (before my Fender Redondo) than any electric Rock/Metal riffs I was trying to impress her with at the time (1984), affecting my musical tastes in my formative teenage years (although I've always had a "Nothing Else Matters" [- Metallica] softer side). Gotta go with whatever stirs up the volatile cocktail of chemicals in the jello behind your skull. 'Dopamine is a hell of a drug!'
