Did the oil and filter change on my plane today and did the safety wiring. A step of this is twisting the wire. You run the wire through a hole bring it back alongside itself and twist it the length to the next mounting point where you run one end through and twist the lines again. Trim as necessary and turn the resulting twisted end about 180 so you don’t stab yourself if you work near it in the future. Been doing it for years, but never understood why the wire twisting. I mean the most stress on the wire is where it passes through a hole and is reversed back 180 to itself. I understand the twisting makes the two lengths stronger, but seems not to make the stressed area of the wire stronger. In fact it would seem to weaken it because of bending it back on itself.

I have tried to find the reasoning on the internet but nothing specific about my thoughts.

Anyone ?

I would think the twisting keeps the wire in place better, IE otherwise the loop going around the head of the nut might work its way up on top of the nut and therefore loose some/all of its anti-loosening ability.

One of those "we've always done it this way" things.

Safety wire on filters?

Found a whole bunch of info on a goggle search for safety wiring oil filters.

Here's a good one from the AOPA.

As for twisting the wire, I guess the logic is two wires are safer than one and twisting them keeps them out of the way and neat. Of course, then you have a weak point where only one wire attaches... reading

Safety wire is used when a locking tab can not be used. The desire is to prevent the bolt or nut from rotating in the direction of loosening. A single strand through the hole is strong enough. Using two, twisted strands allows you to encapsulate the fastener, and gives a more rigid link between the two fasteners. Encapsulating the fastener also eliminated the small amount the fastener could turn with a single thread of wire.

While a single wire would prevent the fastener from falling out, it will not prevent the elongation of the hole.

The direction of the wire must be such that the loosening fastener pulls the wire tight. If there is slack in the wire, or the direction of wrap is such that the wire can give, the locking of the wire is defeated.

smile road racing motorbikes requires almost as much safety wire as aviation. Hope all of you are well.

Yes. I understand. But my question is why the twist. The real stress point is where the wire goes through the bolt or hold point and then turns back on itself. The wire is at the greatest stress there and it is a single untwisted wire.

Because how else would you get proper tension in the wire?
