Well, not everybody then got into metal at first listen...
When I was around 13, I bought my first single which was from the Bee Gees (A, a, a, a, staying alive, staying alive) It was right when Saturday Night Fever, Grease hit the big screen, so it was what got airplay the most. But right around when I hit 15 I discovered KISS, and there albums Destroyer and KISS Alive II and got converted to rock/metal.

Yes, you couldnt go to all the concerts at the time, and sometimes you had more fun in the parking lot then inside. Heck we had part-time jobs then LOL!
We also went to those mid-night theaters were we could see shows on the big screen like "The Song Remains The Same" because they were in movie format then.

Huh? Since when is anything from Rush considered to be "Metal"?
Having said that, the line between what is "Metal" and what is "hard rock" is often very blurred.
Iron Maiden is clearly Metal but not so other hard sounding groups like AC/DC.

While I agree with you, but that´s the eternal battle with branding of bands. Even today it´s not quite clear, but if you consider that those are MTV videos then they, as many other media put tags loosely, and sometimes to there own benefit. The music industry has always promoted what they wanted, and taged how they wanted. They even booked bands to lose money on them on purpose. That´s one of the reasons (among alot others) that I quit working in the music biz many years ago.
A example of mis-taged bands is Led Zeppelin. What would you call there style? Rock, Hard Rock, Acid Rock, Prog Rock, Symphonic Rock? I bet you get it right, but alot of those music journalist didn´t.
