Congrats to both Ziggy and Oliver on their latest gongs, they are each a credit to their respective countries. Well done!

Carrick – Another confirmed claim for Fido, eh? So did he have to beg, fetch, or roll over in order to please the powers-that-be.

Fullofit – It looks as if Ziggy has pulled a nice tour, soaking up the fake mountain sun and all, even if it’s only for a short while. Now to that shot from the front, I suspect that kette mate of his who was coming straight at him and banging away trying to steal your man’s kill. Time for a beating when Ziggy returns to camp.

Epower – Another wound for Oliver? Tis but a scratch! Tough luck on the rejected Alb claim, but twenty-five confirmed is nothing to turn your nose up at. By the way, the old film footage of Pershing in France is great, but I have to wonder if the man didn’t feel a bit inadequate with his single little row of four ribbons while his entente peers were strutting about with all that bling on their chests and around their necks.

20 July 1917
11 Squadron R.F.C.
La Bellevue, France

“You filthy rotter, you’ve pranged my bus!”

2nd Lieutenant Frederick Abbott cursed at the V-strutter which had just cracked the leading edge of the Bristol’s lower starboard wing, then tore the bottom aileron off as well. The King’s pilot, brief moments before, had closed on the Hun and fired a solid volley when his target suddenly throttled back and attempted to carve away beneath. In the process the top right wingtip of the Boche plane collided with Abbott’s mount, causing the aforementioned damage. Frederick immediately turned to port to open up a field of fire for his G/O, and realized the damage had slowed the roll rate of the Bristol considerably. Lieutenant Thomas Yale took full advantage of the maneuver, sluggish as it was, and finished off the Albatros.

The aerial altercation had begun when ‘B’ Flight pounced on five of the Kaiser’s intruders just east of Boiry St. Martin during the morning sortie. For the second time Abbott had been given the job of flight leader, and when he spied the V-strutters some three thousand feet below he did not hesitate to attack. The massive furball of the 15th, as frightening as it had been, had opened the young pilot’s eyes to just what he, his G/O, and his mount were capable of when flying alongside other such teams. The Bristols came streaking down on the Hun machines and within seconds the fight began. Abbott picked out a V-strutter with a periwinkle blue tail fin and quickly had the advantage on him when the collision occurred. Fortunately for the King’s own, the damage had not disabled their bus, but it was now harder to get it to go where one wanted it to. However, there was little time to dwell on this as a very angry Boche sporting a red empennage was now coming about on Abbott and Thomas, looking to avenge the fall of his mate. Frederick worked with what he had left, and while he could not roll as quickly as before, the Bristol was still quite capable of holding its own.

Frederick did a first rate job of keeping his attacker from getting a shot in, with Thomas pecking away at the Alb every chance he got. At one point Red Tail cut directly in front of them and Abbott was able to give him a dose of pepper as well. It took some time but eventually the Boche, having taken more than enough abuse without being allowed to return the same, broke off and ran eastward for the safety of his own lines. Abbott considered giving chase but thought better of it due to his own mount’s battle damage. A quick look around revealed that the rest of ‘B’ Flight had complete control of the situation, with a brace of smoke columns marking the graves of two of the Hun. The rest apparently had given up and were following Red Tail home. Frederick thought going home seemed a good plan too and brought the Bristol around to the west. As he leveled out and alted up he noticed a dark speck far off in front of him, just slightly north, and as his mount was handling fairly well despite the damage, decided to investigate, carefully. As the speck grew in size the young pilot’s exceptional vision picked out that it was another V-strutter; this one with a black fuselage and a red insignia of some sort; and it was alone. Abbott made a wide, slow arc and swung in behind it from a considerable distance then cautiously closed the gap. The Boche took no evasive action whatsoever and flew on to the east, climbing slowly as he did so. Frederick wondered if the fellow was wounded, or was having trouble with his own mount. Either way by the time the Vickers gun of the Bristol barked it was too late. The Hun made a halted, climbing turn to the left, then fell immediately as flames engulfed it. Frederick was curious about the fellow’s livery - a red star with red ribbons flowing back from it - perhaps the emblem of one of the Kaiser’s aces. But he would never know as the plane and its pilot slammed into the earth southwest of Arras and burned entirely.

Some twenty minutes later Bristol A7291 settled gently down onto the field at La Bellevue. Frederick piloted his damaged bus up to the hangar and shut down the V-12. As the prop windmilled to a stop Thomas stood up in his office and slapped Frederick on the shoulder. “Outstanding work Tiggy! Not only did we bag two of them, you got us back safe and sound despite the missing pieces!”

Frederick looked over at the damage as he unbuckled himself. He gave his familiar toothy grin, though this time with a touch of a snarl to it and shouted. “Yes, all well and good, but just look what that filthy, FILTHY Hun buggar did to my lovely lady!”

Fantastic stories and congrats on the medals received! Real life threw me a curve ball the last week so I hope to catch with Reggie and his quest for a Camel.

Fullofit - I'm with Lou, except that kette mate needs to go under the bridge, like in the blue max.

Lou - Not many decorations to be had for the US military then. It was campaign ribbons and the MOH. He did OK by the end though. Pershing's diaries are available online at the national archives. While a fascinating read, they remain mute on the issue of ribbons. That was a fascinating 2 hour distraction, and will be again. #downtherabbithole

edit - our posts crossed in cyberspace. Close call there for Tiggy Winkle and Lt. Yale. Two more. Well done.
I'm beginning to see why the Bristol was such a beast. Might be time to paint a Yale on the bus given how many Boche Freddy's mate is knocking down.

Epower, I am very familiar with Black Jack's story and in fact have read and own his two-volume work "My Experiences in the World War", among other works by and on the man. And yes, there were few gongs available to US servicemen before WWI, (you forgot to mention the Purple Heart). Not so any more. You look at the tunics now of even a two-tour other ranks and they have three times the ribbons Pershing did back in the day. Truth be told it's become ridiculous, many of the gongs and ribbons have little if any real meaning or value, just so much window dressing.

edit: Crossed posts indeed. Thomas has most certainly been responsible in good part for their claims. The Brits really did misrepresent numbers back then, with two-seater crews often sharing a claim yet having it counted as 1 for each man on his personal tally.

To name but one of many, Epower. Nearly all of the training and development ribbons are just there to fill up the area above the left breast pocket, IMHO.

Ooo, a shiny new cross for Ziggy! Thank you Gong Fairy. Hopefully that is all the crosses he’ll see from now on.
Epower, I see what you mean. Deneb Five is right out. Oliver better be bringing those crates down to earth in one piece.
As to the shadiness, yes, yes, her past is definitely cloaked in obscuring mist and shadow, and who knows what else?
Now that travelling bullet is definitely a shocking revelation. Lou might be onto something there.
Speaking of, and to prove my point, Tiggy Wiggy is indestructible and no mate of his would dare shoot him in the back or in the front. It takes a filthy Hun to even make a dent. This boy will go places.

À la Recherche du Temps Perdu - Part 10 of many

4 July 1917

54 Squadron RFC
Bray Dunes, France

0550 hrs. Fourth of July! Line Patrol this morning, Ledegen to the Lys. Heavy, hazy day. Visibility poor. Burr and Ackers, with Goodbehere flying Charley’s wing.

[Linked Image]

NW of Ledegen we ran up behind a flight of 6 Albatri at our altitude. Each chose his man and the fight was on. I put lead into 2 Huns who then dove away, one apparently out of control. A third, I hit very hard then the Vickers jammed. The Alb spun down followed by a Pup. I climbed out of the fight and after 2 minutes of pounding and creative obscenities, I cleared the stoppage. Balls to that syncopated fire control!

Returning to the fight I found a Pup in trouble.

[Linked Image]

Don’t fly straight! Turn you fool, turn!

A long-range burst refocused the Hun’s attention and he broke off. I couldn’t see who he was chasing.

[Linked Image]

It was a lucky shot, I must admit. My first burst out in front of the sharply turning Albatros landed right on his cockpit. The Hun snapped to the right and went down out of control, crashing in his own lines just south of Ledegen.

Collected Goodbehere and Charley and headed back to Bray Dunes. It was Goodbehere dragging that Albatros! He’d given me one hell of a fright running straight away like that. I thought of all I’d learned from Stewart, Nobby and Strugnell and tried to speak patiently. Goodbehere nodded at all the correct places, but I wasn’t sure if I was getting through. I’d send him to Stewart this evening.

1400 hrs. Escort 2 DH-4 from RNAS-5 on a recce of the morning’s patrol area, just north of Lille to Ledegen.

Three low Albs attacked the DH-4s at the rendezvous point east of Bergues. I hit one on a diving pass then reversed to cover Burr.

[Linked Image]
Burr knocked his man down.

Reformed B-Flight and headed to the lines.

[Linked Image]
Many Huns in the sun.

[Linked Image]

Shot through by a second diving Albatros, I ran west and began a spiral climb. Two Huns followed. A6189 was struggling. I couldn’t separate from the Albatri lurking shark-like just below me. The Le Rhone purred and made full revs but the shredded canvas slowed the Pup. I’d not be able to out climb the Huns at this altitude.

[Linked Image]
Another Alb diving down! I forced an overshoot.

Was that a miniature chicken on his rudder?

[Linked Image]
I ran west into a perfect little cloud, and thought I’d got away. The Hun followed.

[Linked Image]

Trading height for speed I drew him west, then reversed into a full loop. He shot past and I was behind him. It was a beginner’s error. The Vickers yapped and tore chunks out of his fuselage. I could see odd shapes of plywood falling away. The Albatros fell out of control and crashed just east of the Lys near one of our support trenches.

Once again, I’d emerged alive, thanks to a bit of luck and the young Hun’s mistake. These Pups were done. Any margin for error against the new Albatri was almost nil. The slightest mistake would almost certainly be fatal.

Something was off with Uncle today and Major Horn too. I soon learned why. I finished my report, claiming the Albatros.
“A moment, Winningstad,” said Major Horn after I’d finished my report. “This came for you yesterday, in point of fact, but I thought I’d save it so you could celebrate your July 4th Independence Day in grander style,” said Major Horn, handing me a slightly oversized yellow envelope.

It took me a minute to realize what I’d read.

The King has been graciously pleased to approve… Good Lord. A DSO!

Major Horn leaned in conspiratorially, “Congratulations, from one perfidious colonial to another.

“You have some work to do,” he continued. “The King is coming here tomorrow for the investiture. Get your kit in order so you’re presentable to His Majesty. You may put up the ribbon on your other uniforms but not on your tunic for the ceremony. The King’s military aide will provide you with a pinned-on bar on which the King will hang the new medal.”

“One more thing,” said Uncle. “You’ll want to be properly in uniform, so do have Parker add these as well, Captain Winningstad.” He dropped two pips into my hand.

I walked out of the office and back to my tent in a daze. So much happened all at once. The prize binge was scheduled for tomorrow night, so I was buying the drinks until then. The evening dispatch rider brought mixed news. Morning Alb confirmed, afternoon Alb awarded to a forward AA battery. Twenty-six. I was alive, newly promoted, and tomorrow I’d receive a DSO from the King of England. No fireworks tonight but one hell of a July 4th nonetheless.

Epower – Congratulations to Captain Winningstad, a well-deserved promotion. And a fine job brushing that Alb from Goodbehere’s six, let’s hope the fellow learns the tricks of the trade before it’s too late.

Fullofit – Tiggy-Winkle is most assuredly not indestructible, it’s simply that he doesn’t know his own mortality - yet.

Carrick – “Balloon Defense: Circled a lot no contact.” So you’re saying that Fido was chasing his tail? By the by, do you use the various mods for WOFF, and if so would you like me to provide you with a WIP Estrée-Blanche mod for you to fly out of right now?

Lots to catch up on gents. The gong fairy has been busy. Let’s hope the curse has been lifted. I did my part to lift it by dancing naked in the pasture under a full moon to the music of Jimi Hendrix and sacrificed a goat.

Lt. Ainslie Harris
Bruay
June 22, 1917.

Yesterday evening, Badger had found Mannock openly weeping in their quarters. A young pilot in Mannock’s flight had gone down in flames. It had affected him greatly. “I will not go out like that” he said. Badger felt for his new friend. He didn’t like seeing him in this much turmoil. Badger consoled him the best he could. They both knew this was a dangerous business. Badger had the physical scares to prove it. Mannock’s scars were invisible to the eye but Badger could see them non the less. Harris’s 14th victory had just been confirmed but he was not in a mood to celebrate.

After an airfield attack for the morning show, Mannock showed Harris his revolver. “I’ll take myself out at the first hint of flames Harris” Mannock had told him. Harris replied, “I don’t blame you one bit Partner. That’s a bad way to go west.” While A and B flight were getting ready for the afternoon show all hell broke loose. Incoming aircraft! Badger and Harris smiled at one another as they took to their machines. Mannock, ever the tactician, had told Badger it would be best to climb hard to the East and try to intercept them going back over as the news of incoming enemy was always a bit late. They led the two flights East climbing as hard as they could. At 13,000’ they circled east of Bruay over no mans land. It did not take long to prove Mannock right. 4 Rumplers were coming at them in a loose formation. Badger signalled his flight and gave chase. Coming in on one of the Huns the gunner opened up and sent a stream of bullets into his aircraft as Badger did the same. As he passed under the big aircraft he saw it start to smoke. By the time he came around, “Old Naps” was really pouring it to him. The Hun fell in flames. Badger turned his attention to another Rumpler. As he and two others dove on it another stream of bullets hit Badgers Machine this time he heard them clang into his engine. The engine started to rattle and vibrate something terrible. “Sonofabitch got me!” He cursed. He switched off and turned back west. He could see the last Rumpler he had just attacked getting away.

With his altitude he glided all the way back to Bruay. His Nieuport looked like Swiss cheese. His knees grew weak and he felt nauseated as he saw how many bullets were close to the cockpit. Reddler, his old hut mate asked if he was ok. Harris replied, “yep, but that sure was hot!” Reddler reached for Harris’s arm and pointed to his flight coat. “Maybe a little too hot Lieutenant “ he said as he examined the bullet hole in Harris’s coat. “S#$t!” Harris exclaimed. He turned away to go file his report. He didn’t want to think about it anymore.

Carrick, if you can send me the contents of your current, modded "global_layer.csv" file for 1917+6 I can send you a mod that will drop in my new drome without disturbing any of your other landscape mods. You can find said file in your WOFF install, the path to which should look like this, (assuming you have it in your 'C' drive):

C:\OBDSoftware\WOFF\WOFFScenery\Period\1917+6\global_layer

Open the csv file with Notepad or Wordpad, preferably Notepad, and copy and paste the entire contents into a PM and send it to me. Easy-peasy. I can then send along the WIP drome for you to enjoy for now.
