I returned home Friday night to find that a package had been delivered during the day. For three weeks now my older son in the UK has been asking if my birthday present had arrived yet. This was it. The gift was in a heavy-duty packing tube and encased in three layers of bubblewrap and tape. When I finally got to it, I found a genuine Royal Flying Corps officers' bamboo walking-out stick with a pewter-silver end piece bearing the RFC cipher. The end cap at the narrow end was brass. There is a three-quarter inch section about three inches down from the RFC cipher where its original owner cut a small section to insert a metal piece bearing his name or initials. Unfortunately that piece is missing.

Greatest gift ever! It has a place of honour in my office so that when I check out on the others working here I can do my best John Cleese impersonation.

Raine; Plenty of time to ponder what that stick has seen and been through!
That should keep your mind busy in idle moments while sipping your favorite spirits!

Lucky to have a son who spent the time to find your perfect gift! It undoubtedly came with a lot of love and appreciation!

Best Regards

Raine, congrats on such a thoughtful gift and a supportive son. (Or is that the other way around?)

Raine, what an incredible present. I'll echo the others and most especially Robert Wiggins, in wondering what that stick, and it's owner, were a party to.

I've no doubt your son was pleased as could be to find such a gift for his Old Man.

Superlative present from your son. I echo the comments from Robert, Epower and Lou! A worthy addition to your office!

All the best!

Raine, holy smokes! That is wonderful. I bet you get chills just holding it. Obviously you did a fine job as a parent, which is one of the hardest jobs in the world. My hat is off to you and your son.

Wow! What an excellent gift idea for a true Great War enthusiast (although that sounds odd when I say it like that).

I bet you've "swaggered" around the house with your gift already, haven't you?

What is your son's name? You should tell him that a lot of the other Dad's around here are quite jealous!
