Wondering if they may lose the ship due to excessive fire damage.

This one.

The report on the news tonight said it would probably burn to the waterline. I'm not a ship guy, but that sounds pretty excessive to me.

Should tow it out and scuttle it. That car ferry that burned for weeks is nightmare to get rid of with 450 burnt out cars and ship compromised. They using chains to cut it up.

Car ferry's are not built to the same specifications as warships but this is a bad fire so it remains to be seen if she will be worth repairing afterward.

Belle River 1000ft ore carrier on the great lakes caught fire a couple years back, going to the scrape heap. Burned for a week.

But a warship with how many aircraft and helicopters did it have aboard. What an inferno that would be.

The deck of the ship looked it had a few containers on top. refurb work maybe the cause, who knows.

It was in dock under maintenance. It had zero aircraft, zero helicopters.

I don't know modern naval practice, but earlier (age of sail) practice was to essentially strip all ordnance and stores from a vessel undergoing repair. This was universal for large repair, but common for merely returning to dock in some dockyards (though that from a limitation of channel depth and access as much as anything).

Thanks, but refurb work is even more dangerous on ship like this. To much flammable materials.

Can you please explain that to us who don't speak ship and navy? Thanks.

More info on the ship and its class

It's like a small carrier and troops landing craft in one. Imagine if we had these during World War II in the Pacific and at Normandy.

Even better, imagine if we had a Nimitz class carrier during WW2!! We would have won the war in the Pacific in like 1 month!!!

Where is the confusing obscure naval terminology? Refurb? Flammable?

Or if we had had nukes during the American Revolution, we would rule the world!

Thanks for that link F4U.

Will read tomorrow. As a guy who went thru a SERIOUS, REAL, and DANGEROUS fire at sea course (for my 1600 ton mate rating I never bothered to get, long story), I know what the training for those folks should be like.

Really no need to bother with the reasons why they navy may have slacked on their training. All those dead sailors on those two destroyers say it all.

Might be a good job for the LCS though...high speed fire boat.

Comment from above:

"We can bet on one thing. Every single lessons learned that comes out of the LHD-6 fire investigation report will have been included previously on one or more prior reports concerning similar fires which occurred aboard other vessels being modified or repaired in port. Count on it."

Yep. This happened because prior lessons learned were ignored.

The US Navy has shifted focus from ship handling and ship safety / damage control to "other things" that have nothing to do with ships or war fighting.

What do you think, is it going to be completely stricken, or will they perform a "refit" where just about everything aside from the ship's bell just happens to be replaced?

From what I've seen thus far I think she will be stripped for usable parts and then scraped.

It is remotely possible that they could cut the entire island away, refurbish the burnt out hanger deck and build an entirely new island. But I seriously doubt that will happen.

Ooooooo ooooooo, I would love to guess, but it'd end up PWEC.
