Ennio Morricone, probably the greatest film and TV composer of all time, passed away today at 91.
His music will live on forever.

I consider Gabriel’s Oboe from The Mission to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Indeed, what a wonderful piece this is - the Maestro will be missed.
RIP

I'm now totally convinced NFB is about 12 years old. Grow up man.

I went looking and now I know who he is. Heard his music in the movies but didn't know his name. The 2 YT video posted above didn't help at all to ID him. None of those were with him. They were cover. The person who started this didn't post a link to any news articles providing more information. When you start a discussion about a famous person passing, it helps to post news articles links. It's a big world. Everyone doesn't necessary know everyone who is famous.

Agreed. It's a real tragedy what happened with "Once Upon a Time in America". In every way it is an outstanding film made by legendary director Sergio Leone and it has an incredible score by Morricone but yet the film was a major financial flop at the box office when released in 1984.

That Danish national orchestra kicks some serious butt and it also has some very nice eye candy. smile

RIP to probably the greatest, or certainly one of the greatest movie composers.

I have to say that that Metallica video completely destroys the magic for me.

It's been their intro piece since the early '80's to put some context Of course being music, and especially metal, it can be very subjective. smile

Clint owes this man a lot. The soundtracks to the Man With No Name movies was as important to their success (and ultimately his) as were all the other parts.

First Ennio Morricone, then Charlie Daniels. Maybe not "the Day the Music Died", but a close second.

SALUTE TO ALL!

My Dad and I have always appreciated him too. The Mission is one of my favorite movies and likewise my Dad and I love that whole score including "Gabriel's Oboe". That's a piece that I'd have to say is anointed. I recommend the album that Yo-Yo Ma did of Ennio's music.
