He played Frodo in the epic 1981 radio adaptation of Lord of the Rings, and Bilbo in the Lord of the Rings movies.
I also fondly remember him in The Fifth Element.

RIP frown

RIP

He was a fantastic and underrated actor.

I seen the 3 rings movies. I didn't know he was Frodo til now. He didn't look the same as in Alien. Look smaller and shorter in the rings movies.

Are you trolling or being serious? I honestly find it difficult to tell sometimes with your posts.

No I am serious. I didn't recognize him in the rings movies. He looks bigger and taller and heavier in Alien. Until I read his passing article today, I didn't know it's the same actor. But of course he is supposed to be a Hobbit and they are small. There were scenes in the rings movies where they had to use children standing in for the 4 hobbits to make them appear smaller standing next to the adult actors playing the other characters.

That's sad, he's easily recognizable from some great movies. Very likable actor. Credits covering Fifth Element, LOTR as well as Alien would be enough to make anyone well regarded. Chariots was a long time ago!
Parkinson's turns up more and more often it seems. I wouldn't have figured him for 88, but it's been a while since The LOTR/Hobbit movies.

I love Chariots of Fire but my memory is failing me on his part so I'll have to watch it again. A little character part I have always loved of his is the Loch keeper in Loch Ness with Ted Danson. The scene with him at the end riding home on the bus is just beautifully acted.

RIP to a talented actor!

As it happens, I am a few days into my re-read of LOTR now, for the umpteenth time. Have to re-read it every now and then, it is such a wonderful literature universe. Every time I read the parts about Bilbo, I picture Ian Holm as he portrayed him.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

He was a fantastic actor, and I remember him most for his roles in "The Fifth Element" and "Alien", but don't forget that he was also in "Time Bandits" and "Brazil."

The Fifth Element has to be in my all time top 10 sci-fi movies. He was great in that,a fine actor.

I was also reminded of his role as Howard Hugh's sort of catch all scientist in The Aviator. He also played I think one of the spookiest Jack the Rippers in From Hell. I think its the only time I've seen a movie tap into the malevolent and spiritual side of that atrocity.

Fifth Element was the first place I recall seeing him, prior to LotR stuff.

I need to re-watch both of these. It's been at least 15 years since I've seen either one.
