OK, the Tanksim review has a lot to say about ongoing upgrades for SB Pro PE. Given the steep price and the hardcore quality of the sim, this seems like a key feature. The Tanksim reviewer even states that future graphics upgrades (like that for SB 2) will be offered as patches.

So...

Would Ssnake or others care to comment on what we can expect from future upgrades--- short term and long term?

The nature of future upgrades is unpredictable as most of our development is determined by the customization projects that we enter with our army customers. The result of these developments we will make available as upgrades. This also means that we cannot commit to a certain deadline as far as upgrade releases are concerned since they are mostly tied to the development results of said customizations. Having said that, our plan is to release upgrades about two or three times a year, and eventually bugfixes in between if they are urgently required by the majority of users.

For the forseeable future these upgrades will be free, but we retain the right (out of financial necessity) to charge for certain feature upgrades that we may develop in the future.

Thanks Ssnake. I can understand that some feature upgrades might not be free.

A couple of related thoughts...

1) I have no problem paying $125 for a sim if it is complete and comprehensive. I also think for that kind of change the consumer has a right to expect a model similar to that of high-end financial, OS or graphics design software, which include ongoing upgrades for at least 2 or 3 years. I think the Sim market has become something of a niche, and if shelling out a benjamin for a good game produces more Falcon or Steel Beasts level sims, well and good.

2) I would hope that when Steel Beasts 2 becomes availabe, you all will offer something like the discount that Windows offers for "upgrade" users. After all, we've got a dongle to prove it. (That was an unintentionally awkward sentence).

Anyway, thanks for your quick and detailed response. If anything, I hope ESIM games is successful in introducing a new marketing model (i.e. higher priced comprehensive sims for the hardcore market) as I think this is the best hope for the genre.

This may very well happen, if we are going to self-publish. Could be however that we'll leave it to some publisher to handle that part of the business, in which case we'd only have a limited say in the pricing strategy.

Agreed: The T-72 would be the most desired (next to the M1A2) add-on, but how do we convince eSim to add it, if none of its customers own that equipment? A couple of thoughts:

1] Convince potential DoD customers that they would be able to build a more lethal OPFOR.

2] Sell the sim to customers who own the T-72.

However, maybe that would be giving the "bad" guys an unfair advantage. \:D

We've invested too much preparatory work into a playable T-72 to let go of it. It will come, I just cannot guarantee a specific date.
