LAST WARTIME DESTROYER CAPTAIN DIES AGED 105

Quote
The Royal Navy has lost its last link with a rare breed of men who helped deliver victory over the U-boat.

Lieutenant Commander John Manners, who has died aged 105, is believed to have been the last of the Royal Navy’s World War 2 destroyer captains.

As commanding officer of veteran destroyer HMS Viceroy, Manners sank U-1274 just three weeks before the wars end, pummelling the German submarine with depth charges just moments after it had torpedoed the tanker Athelduke off the Norwegian coast.

Thank you for your service Sir.

Athelduke: At 17.32 hours on 16 April 1945 the Athelduke (Master Joseph Errett) in convoy FS-1784 was torpedoed and sunk by U-1274 east of Newcastle. One crew member was lost. The master, 41 crew members and four gunners were picked up by the British merchant King Neptune.

FS-1784: Depart Methil on 16 April 1945. Arrive Southend on 18 April 1945

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Fair winds and following seas. RIP Sir!

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

A very well-lived life. RIP.

Given that there were hundreds of destroyer captains in WWII and that they were skippered by younger men it's pretty much a certainty that there are no living WWII commanders of cruisers, battleships/carriers.
