“It has an immense amount of GPU power, but also multi-order bandwidth increase in storage management. That’s going to be absolutely critical,” he said.

“It’s one thing to render everything that can fit in memory,” he added, but a more impressive feat to render a world that “might be tens of gigabytes in size” almost instantaneously, as Sony’s new high-bandwidth SSD makes possible.
Epic premiered Unreal Engine 5 with a PS5 demo.

“We’ve been working super close with Sony for quite a long time on storage,” the Epic CEO explained.

“The storage architecture on the PS5 is far ahead of anything you can buy on anything on PC for any amount of money right now. It’s going to help drive future PCs. [The PC market is] going to see this thing ship and say, ‘Oh wow, SSDs are going to need to catch up with this.”

After the warning from playstation engineer teling players to hold off buying nvme drives untill they release a compatible spec i was wary. after this, we will all need to upgrade to nvme to newest games, and nvme WILL need to lower in price.

Eh, it's a bit hyperbole. At the start of this year 3GB/s SSD's were already the norm, and the PCIe 4.0 motherboards that will arrive this year could theoretically reach 8GB/s, easily beating Sony's claimed 5.5GB/s.

The only real change is that developers can rely on all customers having the same capacity and speed SSD in their system, which ensures they can use the memory more effectively. But how many 3rd party devs will maximize its potential for only a few seconds of loading time per level gain, when they develop the same game for PC and Xbox? It won't earn them any money by following that route.

Just for comparison, a 33GB world will take the PS5 6 seconds and a current reasonably priced SSD 11 seconds. Now take a stopwatch and count those 5 additional seconds. Will the average consumer really buy expensive proprietary Sony SSD's just to save those 5 seconds per level? They didn't buy the Minidisc, nor the Memory Stick, nor the Digital Paper, nor the Betamax, etc... And will PC gamers really change from PC to console when PCIe 4.0 is hitting the market at the same time as the PS5, with potentially much faster IO times?

The phenomenon of a brand new console beating PC's temporarily isn't exactly new.

Yup. It seems most of these internet bloggers have a collective memory that only goes back about 5 years.

The usual pissing match between Sony and Microsoft. Always intensifies leading up to next gen releases.
Neither has announced any game releases that remotely interest me.

He does go into detail and it does make some sense. By the time games start using the technology PCs (at least many mid range gaming PCs) will have the same technology.

But I am sure there will still be many gaming computers that use SATA SSDs for years to come. I have a 2TB and 1TB drive, both of which are SATA.

Keep in mind this is a paid spiel by Sony. They gave Epic a #%&*$# of money to front their console, while Epic have been banned by Sony NDAs from talking about their work on the new Xbox with the same engine.

But also keep in mind Tim Sweeney is:

A: Already a multi-billionaire, and

B: One of (if not THE) most knowledgeable people on the planet in terms of all things game/platform development...

Not too many people out there with a resume like his...
