May 18, 1917.

Dawn Patrol and Huns. We had Aerodrome Security Patrol and mixed it up with 6 e/a. Our 6 a/c flight did well. I got 1 e/a and the Rover flight got one all for 3 damaged machines. The e/a flight had split up and attacked us from a low altitude. I had picked up 2 on my tail. As the Bosch made firing passes I climbed just a little staying higher them doing 180's . Zee enemy gave up Nosed down for Hunland. As I looked around to rejoined, I spotted a e/a down low and slow so just did a corkscrew at haft power down and sat on his tail firing off 200 rds in stings of 20-40 rds. His machine smoked the a flame as he did the dirt, I reported to the Intell that the E/a head red wheel covers.

High noon: Rail yard attack with 3 a/c What can u do Mg fire ? Hq was not very happy.

Carrick, times are a changin’. People are more tolerant and besides, the story without a dress would make less sense.
Congrats on another dead Hun. Pistache is quickly making a name for himself.

<crickets> Hey, were did everybody go?

Carrick - Francois continues to impress. Bagging a known ace to boot. Well done.

27 April 1917
54 Squadron RFC
Flez, France

New Neighbors. Yesterday afternoon two flights of Tripes from RNAS-8 arrived.

Morning job was an Offensive Patrol over the St. Quentin Rail spur junction, just SW of Fontaine Uterte aerodrome. Stewart led us over NML at 11,000 ft Sutton and Nobby Scott trailing. We were 5 minutes over our patrol area when we tangled with a bunch of Red bodied V-strutters. Were these Richthofen’s boys? Whoever they were they knew their craft well. I shot at a red one then 2 of his red comrades jumped me.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

One from a high beam attack shot up the Pup something fierce. Whenever I got the Vickers on one, another two were threatening to get behind me. Red Albatri were everywhere!

[Linked Image]

I followed one down but couldn’t get close.

[Linked Image]

When he dove away East, I made for the lines. I was well under the fight and needed to regain height. Once back over friendly territory I climbed north. Far off I found what appeared to be a Pup fighting 2 Huns. By the time I reached them they’d worked down to my altitude.

[Linked Image]
I caught one with a great red tail and hit him with a long-range burst.

[Linked Image]
After that first salvo, I could never get my sights far enough ahead to hit him.

Red Tail fought very well but when it was clear he couldn’t shake me, he spiraled upward in a shallow climb right up and out of the fight. The wily bast*rd. At this altitude he had all the advantages of speed and climb. I sprayed from range, but it was futile. He headed home. I did the same.

Captain Nicholson confirmed our suspicions. We had indeed scrapped with Richthofen’s Jasta 11. So those were the Baron’s men. A dangerous group especially when they had height and numbers, and yet we all returned unharmed. Alas, the same could not be said of our Pups. The lights would burn late tonight in the bessoneaux.

That Red-tailed Albatros. Fighting him was like sparring with Smokey. When I started, I would miss him by a small margin. After 3 years of almost daily training, I could hit him occasionally but mostly I would still miss by the same small margin. No wasted energy. Red Tail was like that. He knew exactly what the Albatros and the Pup could do and used that knowledge masterfully. Had he decided to fight it out, things might have gotten a bit sticky for me.

1320 hrs. Afternoon show was a second crack at yesterday’s escort fiasco. Once again, we would escort 2 RFC-52 BEs on photo reconnaissance. Would they show up today? Pixley, Stewart, and Sutton. Our target was Vimy Ridge, far to the North.
RFC-52 remembered to wind their pocket watches this time. We collected the 2 Quirks just south of the Somme and proceeded to Vimy with A flight 5000 ft overhead. Many single aircraft spotted south of Arras. Some looked quite hunnish, but they were impossible to identify being so distant.

[Linked Image]
‘A’ Flight had some early work clearing the way.

[Linked Image]
Flying high over Vimy Ridge 6 Albatri came to play.

Our formation never reset after turning to meet their attack. Next thing I knew aircraft were flying pell-mell, every one of which seemed determined to murder me. I nearly collided with one of ours who turned right in front of me. Never saw know who it was. Tracked an Albatros into a sweeping left-hand descent when anther Hun flew right across my nose. I almost hit him too!

[Linked Image]
I broke off and chased this new one. He had a black snake running the length of his fuselage and a fat white band near his tail painted with a black cross.

I think I damaged his controls early on. He was flying on edge and inverted as we went lower, trying in vain to evade me.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]
I started firing 100 yards out and continued until I’d nearly run up on his tail.
He slumped forward in the cockpit.

[Linked Image]
“And there his life and strength were scattered.”

[Linked Image]

Pixley, Stewart and both the Quirks made for Boiry St. Martin aerodrome, landing there. I buzzed the field several times and all were waving as I passed.

Letter to Eliza. She and 55 CCS should be settled into Peronne-la-Chapelle by now. I wonder if Cpl. Biggins is heading that way anytime soon.

Epower, what do you mean where did everybody go? They’re either wounded or dead. smile
That was a busy day. First Red Baron, then that snake. Not to mention even his own flight mates trying to collide with Oliver. Life for him is about to get complicated up there in the clouds.

19 May, 1917 06:50 morning mission
St. Pol-sur-Mer, Flanders Sector
RNAS-2
SC Tobias Chester Mulberry VC, DSC&Bar, DSO&Bar, Ld’H, Od’L
12.0 confirmed kills

It was Toby’s first day back in the air after being shot down, captured and his daring escape in ... disguise. The medics gave him a clean bill of health, provided he stops scratching his split ear. Mulberry was able to reclaim most of his belongings from the rest of the pilots who shared his stuff after being convinced he wasn’t coming back. His C.O. was glad to see him. He was in possession of a medal that was bestowed on Toby during his capture. The Belgian Order of Leopold was an unexpected surprise. After congratulating him, Fellowes also mentioned that a wound stripe was also “earmarked” for him, once all paperwork goes through proper channels. Another bit of less fortunate news was that Toby’s gunner, the other Toby, was not so lucky escaping from German capture and his whereabouts were not know. Toby would fly with a new observer, 2nd Ltn Bishop. No, not the dishonest colonial. Not even his relative. Just another bloke from Manchester. Toby would soon find out what stuff Phil Bishop was made of. They had a few days to get to know each other and it was Phil’s idea to decorate their plane together. Toby’s contribution was a large white “M” on the nose. Meanwhile Phil went to town with decorating the tail of the plane with a mean lightning bolt along the length of the fuselage. That was a few days ago, but this morning Toby noticed a new addition on the rudder fin.
“- What’s this?” He directed his question to his O/G.
Phil acted nonchalant, “- This little thing? I thought it would be a nice message for the Red Baron and his ilk. That’s why red. And you’ve played on their collective noses countless times, so there is that, too.”
Toby inspected the crude image closer. “- Nice touch with the horns! That is definitely going to make the Huns mad.”
“- That’s the idea.”
Their first mission was to bomb factories near Diksmuide. It was a simple affair - in and out without seeing a single Hun.

Just as Toby’s flight was arriving on station to do some reconnaissance work near Nieuport, he noticed seven specks already over the Front. It didn’t look good. He and his wingman were outnumbered by a large margin. He decided to turn around and join up with his escort, who were lingering behind. The seven specks picked up the scent of the bombers and were already in pursuit. Toby finally linked up with the other three De Havillands and followed them back to the Front. The extra reinforcements gave him the confidence he needed. He was immediately accosted by a ‘tros with a dark fuselage and yellow tail. Another soon joined the fun. That one also had a yellow tail. Toby had fought the yellow tails before. These two worked in tandem. Mulberry could see more fights going on around him with the rest of his flight, but these two were just for him. He turned, dove and banked with them all the while trying to get a bead on either of them. Toby had a few opportunities to truly damage one of them. The Albatros soon left the fight and Mulberry was able to concentrate on his mate. They continued to twist around each other sacrificing height for energy. The enemy plane was soon near the ground with nowhere else to go. He dove under the bomber and was concealed by the broad wings and the fuselage of the bomber. Toby lost sight of him and when he reacquired his target, he realized it was not the enemy, but his wingman coming to help. It was too late. By the time Toby noticed his adversary, the Hun was halfway back across the mud skimming the trenches. Mulberry gave chase but soon realized he wouldn’t be able to catch up. He turned back, but not all was lost. Right there, on the ground, between the shell craters of the No-Man’s Land he caught a glimpse of a disabled machine. It was the first yellow tail he fought with. His wingman saw him too and gave Toby the sign confirming it. They both returned to the closest aerodrome and waited for the news of their escorts.

Fullofit - Nice to see Toby back at it. You'd think the CO might give him a day or two to get his mind right. Love the new paint job. Is the b/w version a real photo or more of your graphical magic?

Thanks Carrick!
Epower, Toby’s been back on the correct side of the mud since the 15th. I think 3 days should be enough time for him to get his mind right. ... Who are we kidding. His mind was never right.
No magic here. That’s a genuine RNAS 2 photo. Thought Mulberry should get to ride this bad boy.

epower - that magpie was one of Hans-Dieter's messmates! And Red Tail – did you find out who he was? I'm assuming it was one of the Jasta 11 mob. Oliver is doing really well. Be careful with him. The Sopwith Pup is getting long in the tooth.

Fullofit – it is good to see Toby wearing trousers again. That is an incredible job on the DH4 skin. Nicely done! I didn't notice the thumbed nose on the tailfin at first. That's a great touch.

Lou – hope Swanson gets off his duty officer kick soon. That's no job for a captain!

Carrick – Pistache looks like he will be a tough nut for the Hun to crack. He is quickly making a name for himself.

Tagebuch of VzFw Hans-Dieter Vogel, Jasta 26

Part 4

16 May 1917.

I am lazy these days and have not kept up this diary. Today is Wednesday. Tuesday we flew twice, both times without seeing another machine in the sky, friendly or enemy. And since then rain – all yesterday, all today. Yesterday I went to the Kasino for a late breakfast and stayed most of the day playing chess with Leutnant Blume. Blume is a Silesian and, like me, has served in the East. He has been flying nearly two years and was made an officer a few months ago. He is a good player. I played in Gymnasium a little, but chess takes practice and I am getting plenty of it losing game after game.

Leutnant Lipke is playing his records. He is the self-appointed impresario of the theatre Bohain. Today’s performance is Verdi – Nabucco. Kemper has got a dog but it has peed on the carpet and our Flying Pastor is preaching hell and damnation. The officers talk about getting a drive to Brussels for dinner and dancing. Auer knows a place with real meat and good wine, but it serves only German officers. I get permission to go to Valenciennes with Steinmesser and Witmer. The Staffelfuehrer cautions me, saying that one day I may outrank them all and must not give them any good stories to tell about me. But Leutnant Loerzer the Elder is a good man and allows us to use one of our lorries on a flimsy excuse.

We are about to depart when directions come for all pilots to go to the Kasino for dinner. Leutnant Goering has been appointed to command Jasta 27 and leaves in the morning. The others are good enough to postpone our trip.

The dinner is fair – there was no time for good. We had an onion soup and roast pork with Rotkraut. There was wine in plenty. Goering made a speech. He thanked his good friend Loertzer and spoke of learning much while with the Jasta. I had the impression the speech was mainly about him.

17 May 1917.

More rain. We get our lorry on the road after breakfast. I know a little of Valenciennes from my time in the Jastaschule nearby. We shop for a few hours and everyone has a list from their comrades back at the aerodrome: shaving soap for Kuhl, dirty magazines for Witmer, socks for me, records for Mueller, a shirt for Steinmesser. Then we head for a café that Witmer knows. It has a piano and four long tables filled with soldiery. Food is the ubiquitous omelette and fried potatoes but it is delicious. The proprietor and his wife serve wine and beer. A drunken Gefreiter plays light tunes. We eat and drink and laugh and drink some more.

18 May 1917.

Whether clears in the afternoon. New machines have arrived – more powerful Albatros scouts. We have only a few and IM not one of the lucky ones. We are to destroy an observation balloon near Roisel. I manage two attacks but the gasbag does nothing more than smoke. I am turning for a third attempt when it explodes. Only when we returned to the aerodrome do I learn that our newest pilot, Leutnant Wehrheim, has killed himself by flying into the balloon. I understand. It is an easy thing to do when trying to get one last burst before turning away.

New machines...

19 May 1917.

The Staffelfuehrer leads a formation of five Albatros to the north part of our sector near Douai. We patrol until shortage of fuel forces us home. The English avoid us this day.

Nice job on the skin. Go get some, Squadron Commander!

Raine, near as I can tell Red Tail was just a nameless Jasta 11 Flieger in a proper DIII. Kinda terrifying if that's the average Jasta 11 pilot. Pup definitely showing it's age and fragility. Oliver's hapless rigger, Cpl Johnson, is well on his way to a nervous breakdown.

Nice to see the frontline units upgrading to legit DIIIs. eek
Hans-Dieter will be flying a shiny new Albatros soon enough at his current kill rate.

Raine, good to see Hans practicing those chess moves. He may one day have to use them in the air. More and more cunning will be required with the enemy outnumbering him.
And so, the big-boned one is departing. Good riddance.
Let’s hope Hans has been a good boy and one day, soon, will get a chance to drive the new Albatros.

Carrick, Pistache can’t be shooting things down all the time. Sometimes he has to strafe something.

20 May, 1917 04:45 morning mission
St. Pol-sur-Mer, Flanders Sector
RNAS-2
SC Tobias Chester Mulberry VC, DSC&Bar, DSO&Bar, Ld’H, Od’L
12.1 confirmed kills

Toby’s “yellow tail” forced down in NML had been confirmed.
Today they were sent to do some recon of enemy Front line south of Diksmuide. They completed their mission and on return noticed a furball in progress above Furnes. Toby decided to lead his wingman into battle. He picked a Hun, or the Hun picked him and they started to dance. Mulberry pulled some tight turns which nearly made him lose consciousness. He could see a red band across the fuselage of this Jasta 18 Albatros. He was getting the upper hand when the Boche was saved by one of his kameraden. Another red and blue Albatros joined the fight and Toby was forced to abandon his fight and initiate another. This Hun had a white band across the fuselage. They continued to size each other, dragging Toby further into No-Man’s Land but in the end the German plane disintegrated mid-air after a particularly nasty barrage from Toby’s gun. The pieces of the plane dropped to the ground while Mulberry made his way back to the aerodrome.

The aerodrome was in front of him, so were two silhouettes pirouetting over it with Ack-Ack providing the background. Toby knew one of the Huns was aiming for an easy kill. It boiled his blood. He picked up speed and aimed straight for the bandit. Mulberry saw it clearly now. One of the de Havillands was being chased by a Boche with a white axe on his fuselage. Toby took first available opportunity to fire at the despicable pilot. He got his attention, abandoning his chase in the process. Toby was now the one doing the chasing. The Hun lost his nerve and headed straight for the Front. Mulberry’s machine caught up easily and soon after the German machine was falling to the ground without its wings. That made two planes falling apart mid-air. Could the German pilots be dealing with structural faults in their design?

Awaiting two claim confirmations

Toby wasn’t far from the friendly lines when he noticed 3 Huns ahead of him. He decided to attack and as he was approaching two more Albatroses came down from above and joined the rest of the formation ahead of the British bomber. Toby’s sphincter contracted when he saw the additional Huns come down, but relaxed a bit when he realized they didn’t see him. He must have been hidden from their view by their wings and fuselages. He came close to one of the German planes that have just joined and opened fire. The Boche veered off and Mulberry quickly switched to the other Albatros in front of him. And that’s when it all happened. As he fired on the second Hun, his engine went to hell. The synchronizer failed and Toby shot off his own propeller. The two angry Huns were now positioning themselves behind him as he attempted an emergency landing at the edge of No-Man’s Land. Bullets began to hit his plane. He dove and watched as the Albatroses barrel-rolled to avoid Bishop’s fire. They were low now and Toby had to concentrate on his landing. He could only take quick peeks at the action behind him. He saw one of the Huns dive to avoid machine gun fire and crash into the ground behind them. There were still two more. Bishop was now peppering another machine. Mulberry’s sphincter tightened again as the stricken Airco hit the ground. Rolled for a while and came to a stop. They were safe. Almost! The Huns continued to circle their prey like a pair of sharks. Bishop continued to track the closest one. Toby was struggling with his seatbelt. The damned thing was stuck. He knew they were about to get raked from stern to bow. The Hun banked to line up and suddenly everything changed. The Albatros lost control and stalled, crashing into the ground just behind the landed machine. Toby would like to think Bishop got him, but it looked more like a pilot error. The last Boche, seeing this, turned tail when he realized he was alone behind enemy lines.

From out of my arse take the camshaft,
