Rumor/Leak regarding future AMD APU with new CPU and GPU architecture;

Quote
AMD’s Next-Gen Cezanne Ryzen 5000 APUs Detailed, Rumored To Feature Zen 3 Cores & RDNA2 Navi 23 GPU

The documents were posted over at Anandtech Forum members (via Rogame & Uzzi38). It looks like AMD has already started work on its next-generation APU lineup [for 2021 release].

In general performance, the Cezanne lineup would be a huge improvement over the existing Ryzen 4000 CPUs due to many reasons.

But the biggest improvement overall would be AMD's switch to the Navi GPU architecture.

More TSMC news (because it makes CPU and GPU chips that AMD designs):

Quote
TSMC Starts Development on 2nm Process Node, but What Technologies Will It Use?

With 7nm in wide production and 5nm high volume manufacturing on-track, TSMC is looking even beyond the 3nm node and declaring that early 2nm research has now begun.

And, a few years back, I thought 5 to 7nm would be the smallest it would get -- and 3nm was the smallest it could get. Now 2nm on the distant horizon.

Competition drives progress beyond what some of us can imagine. Competition is good smile

Regarding Competition:

Intel 10th Gen Comet Lake-S Desktop CPUs & Z490 Platform Official – First 10 Core, 20 Thread Core i9-10900K Flagship Chip With Up To 5.30 GHz Clocks For $488 US

[Requires a new MB] Just like every year, Intel has brought a new chipset for motherboard makers to implement in their next-generation designs. The Z490, the flagship of the 400-series, has a lot going on, and to start off, only 10th Generation & Future Generation CPUs will be compatible with the chipset due to the introduction of an entirely new socket known as LGA 1200.

The chip has a base frequency of 3.7 GHz and a boost frequency of 5.1 GHz

the chip would also get Thermal Velocity Boost, ... CPUs that support this algorithm, like the Core i9-10900K, would feature even faster boost frequencies of 5.3 GHz (single-core) and 4.9 GHz (all-core). However, as the name suggests, only top-tier cooling solutions would be able to allow full utilization of the Thermal Velocity Boost feature. So unless you rock a high-end AIO liquid cooler or a closed-loop setup, don't expect a sustained velocity boost

Need to wait for the independent test reports to tell us if/where a i9-10900K plus new MB makes a significant difference vs. earlier Intel CPUs in a given gamer's personal set of games.

Regarding "high boost clocks" on AMD and Intel CPUs:

Quote
Overclocking Results Show We’re Hitting the Fundamental Limits of Silicon

Article

According to the article, Intel is doing everything they can to get GHz -- as that is their selling point. But, the GHz improvements are very small.

My brief summary of the situation: Ffuture Silicon CPUs (from Intel or AMD) will be limited to clock speeds not much higher than those today. So, improvements in CPU power have to come from more cores, threads, and better designed cores that do the job faster at the same clock speeds. Moreover, software (including games) must be written to effectively use more cores/threads if they want to run faster/better (X-Plane uses 20 threads but, as implemented, they don't help FPS very much).

Until a decade or so ago, it looked like Silicon CPU chips might be able to reach 10GHz. For a while now, I've speculated that roughly 6GHz may be the practical limit. We'll see.

Quote
AMD and Oxide Games Sign Multi-Year Partnership to Co-Develop Technologies for Cloud Gaming

MD and Oxide Games have announced with a fresh press release to have signed a multi-year partnership whose goal will be to co-develop graphics technologies for the growing cloud gaming market. More specifically, the expertise of the two companies will be used to craft a 'robust' set of tools and technologies for cloud rendering designed for the ground up to meet its peculiar demands.

Marc Meyer, president of Oxide Games, added: Oxide’s motto is to bring games to life that have never been seen or experienced before. We built the Nitrous Engine specifically with that purpose in mind. AMD’s commitment to gamers and their leadership in pushing the edge of state-of-the-art hardware is a perfect complement to Oxide’s commitment to the same excellence in software.

If you own one of the first Radeon RX 5600 XT you may have 12 Gbps memory you can upgrade with software:

Quote
AMD Encourages Radeon RX 5600 XT Owners To Upgrade Memory To 14 Gbps

Come and grab your free performance upgrade.

Various manufacturers have resorted to launching updated Radeon RX 5600 XT models that already have their memory running at 14 Gbps right out of the box. But if luck has it that you picked up or own one of the previous 12 Gbps models, you can manually upgrade the graphics card's firmware to enable the faster memory.

Article that says how-to

The article indicates what to do for each brand name and model. It varies by brand name.

Flashing a BIOS is always a risk. Long ago I lost a motherboard that way. On the other hand I fixed some hard drives with BIOS flashes.

The Nvidia 2060 has caused an interesting problem in the AMD product line. There is only a 5-10% difference in price and performance between the 14 Gbps 5600XT and the 5700, and while this causes both cards to beat the (Super) 2060, it also causes a MASSIVE performance gap between the 5500XT and the 5600XT, whilst the 5600XT and the 5700 are eating up eachothers customers.

This makes it all the more interesting how the 5600 will fit in if/when it arrives.

Furthermore, the forums suggest a lot of the 5600XT cards (MSI, Gigabyte, et al) can't handle the performance jump of the new BIOS. This will definitely anger a lot of AMD customers and potentially lose them to Nvidia.

AMD Confirms Ryzen 4000 ‘Zen 3’ Desktop CPU Compatibility With X570 & B550 Motherboards – No Plans To Support X470, B450, X370 Chipsets

AMD has highlighted the main reason as to why they don't plan on adding support for Zen 3 Ryzen CPUs on pre-500-series chipsets to be the flash memory limitation. As per AMD, the flash memory chips that store the BIOS have capacity limitations, and not all AM4 boards feature dual-BIOS chip design (usually found on more expensive and high-end boards).

While AMD officially says 'No Support' on the matter, there's a slight chance that a few board makers might add BIOS support for Ryzen 4000 CPUs on older AM4 motherboards. Notebook maker, XMG, confirmed that they will enable AMD Ryzen 4000 series compatibility with B450 chipset through a microcode update.

AMD kept updating the CPU and they kept running on the older motherboards. Logically, that was going to end someday.

AMD announces B550 chipset with Zen3 support

The third generation of Bx50 motherboard has arrived.

Unlike B450, AMD B550 chipset will support PCIe Gen 4 for both graphics and storage. The PCIe interface for other devices (general purpose lines) will be upgraded from 2nd to 3rd generation. This is the most important change for those currently using B350 and B450 motherboards.

8 cores/16 threads and fast graphics with 512 shaders. However, still no solid performance data -- just rumors and supposed leaks. Expected to cost about $160+ (some are guessing) -- if so, a no brainer for an inexpensive gaming build.

If performance is good, I have a use for one (or a more powerful 4800G, if such an APU is released).

Rivals in Arms: Nvidia's $199,000 Ampere System Taps AMD Epyc CPUs

The DGX A100 is an ultra-powerful system that has a lot of Nvidia markings on the outside, but there's some AMD inside as well. A pair of core-heavy AMD Epyc 7742 (codenamed Rome) processors are at the heart of Nvidia's new $199,000 creation.

The [Nvidia] DGX A100 features two [AMD] 7nm Epyc 7742 processors. Each Zen 2 processor comes with 64 cores and 128 threads that run with a 2.25 GHz base clock and 3.4 GHz boost clock. The Epyc 7742 duo accounts for 128 cores and 256 threads on the DGX A100.

AMD to Support Zen 3 and Ryzen 4000 CPUs on B450 and X470 Motherboards

In a surprising twist, AMD has today announced that it intends to enable Ryzen 4000 and Zen 3 support on its older B450 and X470 Motherboards. This is going to be a ‘promise now, figure out the details later’ arrangement, but this should enable most (if not all) users running 400 series AMD motherboards to upgrade to the Zen 3 processors set to be unveiled later this year.

They are acknowledging that they perhaps misread the situation from its user base.

Worth noting that the 500 series motherboards (and eventual 600 series) do have slight performance advantages over the 400 series.
