In wartime (WWII, Korea, Vietnam for instance) the USCG serves alongside the US Navy therefore in peacetime they need to train likewise.

Guy I knew just before I left to Basic retired as a recruiter from the CG. Served in the Gulf for 3 years dealing with security of the Oil Pumping Stations for the tankers.

It seems like the old joke of joining the CG in order to avoid a deployment outside the US no longer applies! That hurts. I had an uncle who did 30 years in the Coast Guard. He had this map of the world with pins on all the places he'd been. It was everywhere. Near North pole, South pole, just everywhere (I will confess he was quite an overachiever though)... I will repeat that he was pretty hardcore - but he was living proof that the US Coast Guard does a lot more than people think... I saw his retirement "ceremony" in 1980. He had five chevrons on his arm, and there was a bunch of guys (also retiring) with four asking "How'd you get FIVE?"... His answer was "Four years on base". He never told me or them exactly what or where that was about... I of course have no proof of this. I only know how hard ass he was...

Had 2 uncles and 4 friends that are hardcore CG, and they went everywhere they wanted them. Not their choice, but they go where-ever they are told. One loved ghosting the narcos. as they came in. Its real out there. Our Was.

Could not agree more. Shallow comment.
It has nothing to do with being a "shallow comment" since I was not the one who created this joke which has existed maybe for several decades now? As with most jokes concerning the military branches, they are uninformed and inaccurate to a large degree but you also cannot dispute the fact that the public at large has these misconceptions about the CG. The National Guard too for that matter.

It doesn't apply to modern day, but in WW2 the Treasury-class cutters were probably the Americans' best-suited escort vessel in the Atlantic. Big and beamy, they were excellent blue-water escorts.
One of the Coast Guard training centers is a few miles from me in Cape May, NJ. When I was growing up my dad hired many of the recruits to work for him while they were here training before getting their first assignment. Some of them I am still friends with. One of my best friends from high school went to the academy, did the tall ship cruise around the world (or half of it, I think they swap classes half way). He later went to the FBI.
I got pulled over one time by the USCG in a Zodiak type boat. Not my best day.
No, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!

It seems kinda small to be so far from home ... It still dwarves the ships in which Colombus crossed the Atlantic It's all relative!

I guess I wasn't so much surprised by the inclusion of coast guard vessel but perhaps the vessel itself. It seems kinda small to be so far from home ... ' But I guess they only have one of these guys: USCG has 8 of those (Legend class) on active service, plus the the three old Hamilton class. Back in the Cold War, those things used to carry Harpoons and ASW torpedoes . . . The offensive weapons have been since removed, but their defensive suites are on par with the frigates of many navies.

Because they know the life span of those "assets" will be measured in short minutes...hopefully. Remember the US Navy recently killed more of their own than the Iranians just lost. Why? Because some admirals didn't think it was cost effective to require naval officers to be effectively taught how to navigate a vessel.

Look for me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Tic Toc...or anywhere you may frequent, besides SimHq, on the Global Scam Net. Aka, the internet. I am not there, never have been or ever will be, but the fruitless search may be more gratifying then the "content" you might otherwise be exposed to.
