Watching this week's new episode: land mines. The Chinese invented the first self exploding land mines after discovering gunpowder and deployed them for the first time in the war in Inner Mongolia in 1215.

A 12 lb ceramic vase filled with gunpowder and a self activating fuse.

During the battle of El Alamein, both sides, British and German, buried a total of 17 million mines along the Libya Egypt border and many of those mines are still there.

There are still 100 million land mines buried all over the world including places like The Falkland islands.

Every 20-30 minutes, someone somewhere in the world is a victim of a land mine

All those landmines didn't help the Germans and Italians much at El Alamein though. biggrin

On the contrary, I consider this a very good effort from the german side to keep their ground.

Without laying those minefields, Operation Lightfoot wouldn't even be necessary to steamroll the german forces east of Tobruk, and even during the battles in July, the surprise discovery of a minefield by the New Zealand Division -and the subsequent disorganisation- allowed the germans to counterattack and free hundreds of prisoners from British hands.

You are correct. I should have specified and said that I was talking about the second battle of El Alamein. smile

The last 100 days of the War in Europe were the bloodiest and most violent of the entire war with the Allies on the West advancing East toward Germany and the Russians on the East advancing West toward Germany.

The Russians had over 2 million men moving rapidly toward Germany and its capital of Berlin and they were not stopping and they were not taking any prisoners.

If I recall correctly, the Soviets had about 500,000 casualties during the storming of Berlin.

Children of Dune was very well made and it was a huge improvement over the Dune miniseries. It's also interesting getting to see James McAvoy before he became an A-lister in Hollywood.

Just finish the WWII documentary about the last 100 days in Europe. They mention that after the only bridge across the Rhine, the one at Remagen, that the Germans forgot to destroy as they retreated, collapsed, the Allies mounted an operation to cross the Rhine and move further East into Germany. I knew about the Rhine crossing but I didn't know that it involved over 1200 boats and the largest single day airborne drop of the entire European theater: over 16,000 paratroopers were dropped on the East side of the Rhine onto Germany before even one boat started crossing the Rhine. Many who were there commented that it was D-Day all over again.

In other news I watch the rest of episode 5 and the entire episode 6 of Westworld. No idea what was mostly going on in episode 6. The entire part with the cowboy in black we could had done without. Some of what was going on at Delos with Charlotte and the annoying French guy made no sense to me.

Watching a Nat Geo program about the role of the Monarchy in WW2 and the king being part of the deception plans of operations Double Cross and Fortitude before and after D-Day.

Edit: The program is called The King who fooled Hitler https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10274814/

Nord VPN here, Not free but works great and they give you lots of tips for use.

Had it about 6 months.

yes set up a VPN (which I have) to get round the restrictions that the media companies put up, it's just a pet peeve with me that so much is restricted to one place and not available in another, it's like the regional coding on DVD/Blurays, my DVD and bluray players don't care where the disks come from they will play them whether or not they are encoded, it did cost extra to get the regional/zone locks removed. It's just another unwanted step one has to go through to watch content that some company has deemed that you are unfit to watch.

Romantic passions? Ah, I guess the makers of the film had to lure in the female viewers somehow.

Open the entertainment news and saw an article about this. Enuff with these reboots and remakes! Maybe the Coronavirus is what's needed to change Hollywood business model.

My fundamental problem with the Valley Girl remake is that the original film was a film of the times (early 80's). In other words, the original film perfectly captured the "zeitgeist" and that's why it resonated with the pop culture at the time. This remake is trying to "step into the same river twice". It won't work. I guarantee you this remake will be forgotten about a few weeks after it comes out.
