Hiding in the bushes
Recently I stumbled upon this little gem - Tiny Combat Arena by Who485. It's still in early development - you can check it out here yourself:

https://why485.itch.io/tiny-combat-arena

It's aesthetic is clearly inspired by the mid 90's flight sims. Though the gameplay is pretty simplistic at this stage, the flight and physics modelling is on par with A-10 Attack/Cuba! by Parsoft which is high praise.

It supports keyboard/mouse, gamepad and joystick controls. I struggled a bit with the gamepad (had a tailstrike during landing in the Fishbed), joystick is more precise though as you would expect.

I really look forward to upcoming features - developer shares his progress in his devblog on discord. It looks fantastic - upcoming AV-8B (V/STOL capable) with cockpit view, working HUD, instruments and Track IR support. You can see his latest progress on his YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/Why485

With the gameplay fleshed out this will be a dream come true for the retro flight simmer as myself.

This has such an A10 Cuba vibe, I love it!

Inspirational. Thanks for sharing. cheers

The rusty wire that holds the cork that keeps the anger in
Gives way and suddenly it’s day again
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done
Two suns in the sunset, hmph
Could be the human race is run

A-10 Attack/Cuba was the inspiration for gfx style as stated by the dev himself.

Now this looks cool! I've always had an idea in my head that I wish someone would develop a base, simplistic but still full of minute details combat sim that sort of feels like its on a micro level that at the same time could be highly moddable or modular so that separate campaigns or time periods could be made with it such as a Korea era carrier based naval aircraft campaign. I was reminded recently in A-10 Cuba, which I loved back when, of its physics. I had forgotten about that and I think that's one of the reasons I really liked that game. I also remember loving its lower polygon design as it seemed to run pretty smooth back then compared to other sims and I remember liking all the little details in it like the particle effects and so on.

It would be nice if this game could somehow still render things in low detail but with some newer tech. For example, I was reminded of A-10 Cuba's almost cartoon looking sun. I'd be nice if this game would render the sun as a light source and still include some simple but nice looking volumetric or similar technology clouds. Thanks for sharing damson.
