Ooooo! That is a pretty gong! Thank you Lou and Raine. So, do I need to remind everyone to call him Sir Toby now?

Germany
With his flying googles smeared with blood and his eyes full of tears, Willi narrowly managed to avoid colliding with a parked DFW in front of it’s tent Hanger. The rudder controls of his Alb.DIII were shot away along with all the benzin in the front fuel tank. A sudden jolt from behind threw Willi forward and he banged his head against the cockpit cowling. The tail of his Alby had caught itself in the tent hanger of the DFW, forcing the Alby to an abrupt halt. All over aircrew personal ran here and there. MG and Flak was going off thick and heavy. Houplin airfield was buzzing with activity. Off in the distance Willi could see the wreckage of another Albatross, blazing on fire as men tried to get near but that was now impossible. The black outline of the pilot was quite clear. It was Steuber.

Minutes after the attack, as some semblance of order started to return, Willi was greeted by Obltn. Franz Hailer, CO of FFA 5lb. “I’m thankful for your intervention, and I’m sorry that we crashed in this way.” said Willi. “If I could bother your men to patch up my aircraft I’d be very grateful.”

“Yes, that shouldn’t be a problem. Well that was quite the show I must say, not every day that we have visitors.” Hailer said with light humour, “I must also report that another 4 of your men have been shot down.” Hailer removed his head dress, “I’ll send out crews to recover what we can. You can come by later to pick up what we find.”

“Sorry about the tent… I didn’t see it I guess.”

Needless to say, moral in the Jasta has hit an all time low. Jasta 27 has no CO again, and tempers are a little frayed.

Meanwhile, back in the chateau, General Stafford Hyde-Montague harrumphed. "A foreign order? And Belgian at that. This Mulberry chap better not let it go to his head. It's much the same as being named the station agent for Nether Bumbleton."

Many thanks to Lou for his stellar work as the Gong Fairy!!!

Lederhosen, that was tough! Glad Willi survived.

Raine, I will second that. It really adds to the immersion. I do have a question though, do Swany and Toby fly with their medals? I think the machine would be far overloaded!

Lederhosen, it looks like a miserable day on both sides.

Lou, congrats on the bar to your DSO. Trying to pronouce all those accolades after Swany's name sounds like Klingon to me.

2 May, 1917 04:45 morning mission
St. Pol-sur-Mer, Flanders Sector
RNAS-2
SC Tobias Chester Mulberry VC, DSC&Bar, DSO&Bar, Ld’H
11.9 confirmed kills

Three of the six claims from yesterday have been confirmed. Because the kills occurred so close to the aerodrome, the anti-aircraft artillery jumped at the chance to claim the other half. Dobbs worked all night to get the engine back to working order. He was still tightening the nuts on the collector when orders were given to bomb Ghistelles aerodrome. A Tripe from RNAS-10 will provide cover.
It was very early in the morning and the landscape below appeared serene. Still asleep. They were close to the Front when Toby’s engine gave a loud bang and thick dark grey smoke began to pour from the exhaust. Toby gave signal to scrap the mission. They would have to come back later today.

2 May, 1917 12:15 afternoon mission
St. Pol-sur-Mer, Flanders Sector
RNAS-2
SC Tobias Chester Mulberry VC, DSC&Bar, DSO&Bar, Ld’H
11.9 confirmed kills

“- What the hell happened up there?!” The C.O. of RNAS-2, Sqn Cdr Fellowes walked up to the pilot dismounting the DH.4 that has just landed. The machine was full of holes and the steam was rising from the radiator. Ack-Emma’s and the medics were helping the wounded rear gunner out of the cockpit. Flight Lieutenant Robert Clough had distress written all over his dirt covered face.
“- Sir, I was flying on Mulberry’s wing and we were approaching Ghistelles aerodrome, getting ready to drop our eggs, when a Schwarm of V-Strutters attacked us. We were outnumbered three to one...”
“- What about your escort? The four Pups from RNAS-4?” Fellowes interrupted.
Clough wiped sweat off his forehead leaving a “clean” smudge. “- They were way behind us, dilly dallying. We weren’t going fast, Sir. They only joined the fight after we had the first crack at the Huns.”
“- Alright, I’ll deal with them later. Tell me what happened.” Fellowes took out two cigarettes from his case and offered one to Clough. The pilot took it hungrily. They both lit up and Clough took a deep drag. He exhaled through his teeth and with a still shaking hand put the cigarette up to his mouth to take another puff.
“- They were all aces from Jasta 18. The ones painted in blue with red noses. I honestly thought we were done for. I had two on my tail and another two or three after Mulberry. I saw him take a few rounds, but he held his own. I then lost visual and had to deal with the Huns on my tail. I was getting hit.” He thumbed behind him at the perforations in the wings and fuselage. “- I couldn’t shake them off and then Mulberry came to the rescue and chased them off. I saw him then go back to battling with his own Huns. He even got one! The Albatros began to smoke and then caught on fire. I can vouch for that one.”
“- We’ll make some calls to confirm.” The C.O. made a mental note to remember to do that.
“- Mulberry continued to do battle with more Huns. One had a white chevron, another a white band around the fuselage. He had one on the run and followed him towards the airfield. I could see another Hun follow them but I don’t think Toby saw him coming. His gunner was strangely still and not returning any fire.”
“- That Godard, I don’t know about him. I’ll have to have a talk with him when he gets back.” The C.O. made another mental note.
Clough continued, “- I tried to warn him. I brought my machine close to his port side and I tried to signal him, but he ignored me.”
“- That hothead, he probably thought you were trying to steal his kill. When will he learn?” Fellowes made an observation, more of a loud thought than criticism. “- Then what?”
“- Nothing. He continued on, hellbent on bringing down his Hun. I peeled off and tried to take out the Hun behind them, but ... you know, these are bombers, not scouts. Anyways, he almost had him, but the Hun behind got him first. I saw him go down.” Clough swallowed hard. He was silent for a moment. “- Only if his gunner tried to fire. Just tried, maybe he’d spook that Hun behind and he could be telling you this himself. I ...” He paused, his mouth open, his eyes looking for something in the sky to comfort him.
Fellowes took a deep breath. “- Do you think he’s alive?”
Clough’s eyes darted to meet his C.O.’s “- I don’t know. I didn’t see. I chased that Hun that fired on Mulberry and then turned back and I came ...” he looked around “... home.”
Fellowes put a hand on the crestfallen pilot’s shoulder. “- He’ll be alright. I’m sure of it. Now, go clean yourself, then get to the mess and get something to eat. You have a morning show tomorrow.” The C.O. watched his pilot follow his order. He took another drag of his cigarette, held the smoke in his lungs for a long while while mindlessly inspecting his cigarette butt. He dropped it on the ground, crushed it with his boot and exhaled.

Oh no! Will Tobias make it? Does he live? Does he make it back to the lines or spend the rest of the war in a prison camp? Enquiring minds want to know.

Oberleutnant Gunther Ganz
Jasta 6
May 2, 1917

Ganz was leading 2 other machines to babysit a balloon SW of St. Quentin. On the way he noticed a speck behind and below. It was too far to identify but soon the Archie puffs gave it away and Ganz turned to engage. He made short work of the Nieuport and the 3 machines continued to the balloon. Upon arriving at the balloon 6 Nieuport 23’s dove on the 3 Albatros. It was pandemonium! After dodging and firing Ganz found himself one on one with a very good French pilot. The ended up on the deck with Ganz flying between and around trees with his wingtips barely off the ground. The Frenchman thought it too hot and gave up. Non too soon as far as Ganz was concerned. All 3 machines made it back.

For the afternoon patrol Ganz lead 4 others to patrol a 5 mile sector of the lines NW of St. Quentin. Nearing the town he again noticed enemy machines behind and below. Ganz gave the signal to attack the 7 Nieuports. He sent one down on their initial pass. Climbing he saw 2 on Keppers tail and went to his assistance. Ganz drove them off and they turned tail and headed west with the rest. The 3 machines climbed back up and continue the patrol. They had no more arrived at the area when 2 BE’s come along. Bernert made short work of one but the other escaped. Bernert signaled engine trouble. Kippers was no where to be seen so Ganz returned to Wassigny alone. Coming around on final approach he faintly heard the whine of a Nieuport! He immediately climbed and turned searching the sky. He found himself locked into a turning fight above his own field. Twisting and turning Ganz finally got the upper hand and sent a long burst into the Nieuport. It burst into flames and went down. Ganz’s satisfaction turned to horror as the Nieuport dove straight into a maintenance shed which exploded in flame.

Of his 7 outstanding claims, 4 were confirmed bringing his total to 20. The ground crew claimed the last Nieuport which Ganz gladly let them have. It wasn’t he who destroyed the shed! Luckily, no one was killed as they were all outside watching the show.

Finally a Kill was posted to the Tally Board then off to escort 2 Fee's down to Cambri area. The route was fly at 8000ft over 2 Fee's at 7000ft behind the enemy side of the lines. I say blast it all although it did work. 4a/c close escort and 3 N-23's as rovers. I spotted numerous e/a flights some times all around us, but no one paid attention except the ground guns. We had 1 Albatross Scout fly over the top at 600 yds but kept going. Finally our Rover attacked a 2 seat e/a but broke off after getting a N-23 flamed. It was the only loss during that long mission.

Fullofit - NOOOOO! Say it ain't so, and right after being knighted. Surely Toby has made it through with only a wounding, yes? Tell us man, tell us.

Carrick - Congratulations on Nigel at long last being awarded one of his claims. About bloody time! Also, to that last item you posted, that's my kind of fishing.

Lederhosen - What a horrible outing for Willi and his men. Unbelievably bad losses, it's no wonder morale is low.

MFair - Wow! Gunther is on a roll, four confirmed claims and the HHO award to boot. With twenty kills and rising he's going to be seeing that Blue Max soon as well me thinks.

Raine - Thank you for the gong!

.

3 May 1917
66 Squadron R.F.C.
Vert Galand, France

Today's afternoon show for B Flight was, well, it was insane. I did not think my man was going to make it through, but the gods were smiling on him yet again and he managed to survive it and get his kite down in one piece. Too much action to possibly explain it all, so the next few pictures and captions will have to suffice.

What do you do when the entire Flying Circus is coming at you at once? You fly straight through the middle of them and hope for the best.
[Linked Image]

The initial merge with Richthofen's bunch left Captain Swanson's mount in less than fine fettle. He fought on despite some sluggishness in the controls.
[Linked Image]

After what seemed like an eternity of twisting and turning and firing and avoiding fire, Swany had to dive out of the fight, his Pup becoming less and less responsive. The jasta leader followed him down all the way.
[Linked Image]

The King's ace managed to shake off the red battle flieger by dragging him first over the British trenches and then past a friendly obs balloon, where the Hun finally broke and ran east. However, another member of the Circus was waiting for the Captain as he neared the aerodrome at Lechelle.
[Linked Image]

Fortunately for Swanson this attacker gave up as well when he began drawing ground fire from the field below. The Captain landed and was about to climb out of his kite when he noticed the pain in his left arm. He'd caught a bullet just below the shoulder so it was off to the medic to have it attended to.
[Linked Image]

As it turned out the bullet had passed through mainly flesh, and Swany was told he would be out for several days, possibly a week. Afterwards he learned that one of the new fellows, 2nd Lt. Jameson, had been killed in the fight. Two other Pups of B Flight were shot down but the pilots had escaped major injuries, miraculously. The remaining two Pups, while managing to land, were shot to hell with Lt. Montgomery being injured, again. When Captain Swanson returned to Vert Galant he further learned he had been presented a second award of the DSO for his performance over the last month. Little consolation for the losses suffered by 66 Squadron in April, and now May starting off the same way.

Carrick, congratulations on the victory. I’d say that second fish was a keeper!
Lou, the war does seem to be getting more intense. Every outing is a challenge.

Oberleutnant Gunther Ganz
Jasta 6
May 3, 1917

The morning flight was to escort 2 DFW’s to recon the lines near St. Quentin. After the 4 Albatros formed up at altitude they headed NW to rendezvous with the 2 seaters. Near the rendezvous point they were attacked by at least 2 Nieuports. Ganz was not sure. Ganz immediately got on the tail of one and sent it tumbling down to earth. He climbed up searching for his flight. The only one around was Bernert. They circled for a few minutes and headed for the rendezvous point. Turning around to check his tail Ganz thought, “sonofabitch!” 4 more Nieuports were closing in on them. He signaled to Bernert and they both turned to engage. Ganz damaged one with a head on pass and turned in time to see one on Bernert’s tail. He dove and it disengaged but too late. Ganz sent it to earth in flames. They called a wash and RTB. Ganz claimed two and the others claimed 2 more. All with no losses.

After a short rest and some food they were back in the air at 1400 hours to patrol the lines at St. Quentin. Again they are attacked by Nieuports while gaining altitude after takeoff. Ganz noticed bombs hitting the field at Wassigny and seconds later they were in a fight for their lives with 7 Frenchman. When it was over there were 3 smoke columns rising from downed Nieuports. 2 Albatros crashed on landing from damage and another had so much damage it was written off. Jasta 6 was holding its own but was taking a beating. There were only nine flyable machines left. The strain was telling. It was not the jovial banter at dinner. Ganz was tired. He just wanted to sleep. Even the news that his total was now 22 victories was not enough to put his mind and aching body at rest.

May 3. 1917. Hq posted orders to Re run the mission down to Cambri due to some of the photos were blurry. The Sqn put up 7 a/c to Escort 3 Be2's. Some where over Lens at 7,500 ft I took Shrapnel in the Motor and started loosing power made the lines and landed near a French Airfield so will be spending the night. I must say, these chaps do have a nice Officers mess.

MFair, Herr Ganz is carving through the Entente pilots like a hot knife through bratwurst. I shudder to think what will happen when Swany finally pays Jasta 6 a visit. Who will come out on top? Congrats on the latest confirmed claims.

Carrick, congrats on finally getting a confirmation. That’s some fishing!

Lou, I had to wipe my screen clean to make sure all those specks were enemy planes. Yep, they are all Huns and not dust bunnies. Glad Swany came out of that furball in one piece.

It was dark. Mulberry’s head hurt. His ears were ringing. His whole body was in pain. Why couldn’t he see? He tried to raise his hand to his eyes. He was too weak to even do that.
He could hear voices, but couldn’t understand. Was it German?
He could only catch some words but he didn’t understand any of it. “Blutverlust”. “Lebend”.
He tried to remember what happened. The Hun behind him was firing. Toby had nowhere to go. He was too low to maneuver. The engine lost power. Trees came into view. With last ounce of will he righted his plane and landed hard. Blood was everywhere. He lost consciousness.
He was here now. Where is here? How long ago?
He was fading. Anne’s face was floating in front of his. “I love you.” He looked down at her bare breasts. Were they hers or his? Everything was dissolving into darkness.
“I ... Blutverlust ... love ... Lebend ... you”
He was sleeping.
