This may have come up before but I just discovered it today. Certainly worth a look. The National library of Scotland has a utility where you can view trench maps against a number of real world backgrounds. One can select the area then adjust both the background map and the transparency level of the original trench map.
See attached pics. The zoom level in these pics is nowhere close to the maximum.

Thanks Epower. I’m amazed how well those old maps match the real world terrain. And it’s a neat trick to be able to adjust the transparency of the overlays.
