Due to some demand where people want to know how to get Comanche Gold to run on modern computers, I've uploaded a patch that me and a couple of others have been working on.

All credit goes to Bugswatter for the original patch archive and Tính for testing and feedback on Windows 10.

* Download the Comanche Gold Patch Pack (with docs).zip and follow the readme file in the .zip.

These are the most important files to run Comanche Gold today!
Thank you FLYBOY!

I prefer dgVoodoo 2 video emulator instead of DXGL - copy paste install and gives 1280x1024, - highest possible resolution

Nice of you to drop by, ufolev!

I hope you are keeping well. I sometimes think back to the golden days of Comanche Gold!

I've only ever used dgVoodoo as a Glide wrapper, but I understand it can be used as a DirectDraw wrapper too?

Hi FLYBOY!

This is how to use DgVoodoo instead of DXGL in Comanche Gold

First you download Dgvoodoo 2.53 from http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2.html, then open the Zip file and copy "dgVoodooSetup.exe" and every .dll file in the "MS" folder into your Comanche Gold folder. The launch "dgVoodooSetup.exe" and set "Config folder" in the upper left corner to your Comanche Gold folder, you can also adjust the setting to your liking if you want.

Hello all,
Finally going to get to play again soon.
Thank you to everyone who knows what they're doing to be able to make this work. I was able to follow Flyboy's files which got it to start, however, video is scrunched into the left side of my screen and distorted. BUT..it's progress!!! Have my PC guy working on virtualbox or to just make a stand alone PC to play these older games.

I don't feel alone in my quest anymore. Anyone else on who went to Scottsdale to play?

Hi Dragon36,

I've never ran into that particular problem myself but I'm led to believe that running the game through DXGL should fix it. It'll fix the distorted colors issue if not the squashed screen. You don't need to change any settings in DXGL, simply creating a profile for the game is enough.

Believe it or not but Comanche Gold works just as well, if not better, on modern hardware.

Hey Flyboy,
Thanks for the reply.
I believe, I also believe that it is usually something simple that I am the weak link. When I used your patch pack it started, but has the video issue. I hadn't changed anything else. I tried the Voodoo thing but it then failed due to directx, so I removed and reinstalled. Oh well.
We did get my old XP box going and it runs there with no issues. Will play with trying to get video better but will start with your patch.
I am setting up a dedicated old school system, ordered new throttle and joystick, using 42" TV, it's own part of my office, etc..
Hoping that it will be possible to play online again someday. Reading old posts etc trying to get a feel for whats possible.

Hi Dragon36,

Forgive me but I don't quite understand what you're saying. I didn't mention anything about Voodoo. I did mention the DXGL program and that should fix your squashed screen issue on your current operating system.

As far as your XP system goes, as long as you have the WC3.MNU file from my fix package in the game directory, you'll have access to higher screen resolutions and detail from the in-game menu (press Esc when in a mission).

I briefly delved into multiplayer many years ago but it was never really my thing. I wrote up a couple of articles on my website about my experiences which include the methods we used. Apologies if any of the info is outdated, but the programs involved are still available.

Hey,
No no, forgive me. I am the weak link here.
I needed to look up DXGL. I will get it installed.

I am very appreciative of any and all help and advice.

Thank you.

I'll give you the exact steps to follow to get Comanche Gold running through DXGL:

1) Open the DXGL program by clicking the "Configure DXGL" shortcut in the "DXGL" folder that appears in the Start menu after installing it.
2) Click "Add..." at the bottom left of the program.
3) Locate the "Wc3.exe" file in the Comanche Gold install folder, select it and click "Open".
4) Click "OK", close the program, and that's it!

Note that you DO NOT need to run DXGL every time you play the game. When you did what you did in the steps above, the program placed a DXGL DDraw Library "ddraw.dll" file in the game folder that the game uses by default without ever having to touch the program again.

Success!!! That fixed the video issue!!!
I'm stoked, Thank you very much. Now I just need the throttle to arrive so I can get everything calibrated and running.

Thank you again,

That's great news! I'm glad my suggestion worked, there's always a chance a fix won't work for someone for whatever reason.

No problem, keep us informed of your progress.

Busy work week,

Thank you again for the help, I know I am the weak link.

So...seeing why I had upgraded from my old PC. Slow, no sound through Sound Blaster, harddrive full, etc.. Tried installing Quake, and can't because it doesn't run with WindowsNT (not sure yet what NT is)... My project for the weekend to see if I can clean it up and research enough to salvage it.
Not too concerned, will probably just go with original plan to build a stand alone 98se PC.

Comanche works on both, have all controllers as of Monday but haven't hooked them up as I am trying to set it up right and not half ass it.

Thanks for the update. Windows NT was a family of operating systems made for servers, designed to complement the 9x family that were intended for home users. Almost like a business version of Windows 95/98/etc. Some old games refuse to run on NT-based systems depending on how they were coded, and I mean games aren't meant to be played on business operating systems... right?

Since the community cracked Comanche Gold to remove the CD-check, which ironically was the only thing preventing it from running on more modern versions of Windows, it's a surprisingly robust game that will run on everything from Windows 95 through to Windows 10 without flaws (except the color issue you ran into).

Nice setup. I've never had a separate throttle or rudder pedals but I'm sure it will be a ton of fun flying the Comanche with those.

So...not sure why Quake is talking about NT, oh well. Been doing ok installing and running other games as well on 10, Delta Force 2 just froze up on 3rd mission, but one problem at a time. I think I reset SoundBlaster to be the audio on the XP box but didn't get to check yet.

I have not played (after the first week) without the throttle, stick and pedals(not fond of the pro petals but used for my flight sim). I am leaning towards running Gold on my Win10 but using the the other location as the gear takes up space.
After messing around on that side I realized I may be a bit close to the 42" screen, am going to reinstall the desk portion away from screen about 2.5ft which should help. Everything just seems small after, like was my keyboard always this tiny?, then I move to the 32" and it reminds me of a 17" monitor, lol.

Been reading some of your other posts, but have to be careful of the dates. Once my platform is stable will start using some of the missions that had been made.

The NT kernel (engine) has been used in consumer versions of Windows since XP, so will identify as a version of Windows NT. I don't know if I've ever ran into Quake giving me issues, but then again I always run it though WinQuake or D3DQuake or some program that makes it compatible with modern operating systems and offers more options. I've never had a problem with DF2 freezing either, but again I use modified EXE files or cracks where possible as it saves keep reaching for a disc or mounting virtual disc images and in some cases using cracks can be the only way a game will work on later versions of Windows, same as the issue with Comanche Gold.

Feel free to check out my Comanche Gold website where you can find custom missions and useful programs.

Missing something when it comes to the controllers.

Downloaded and installed CH control manager, selected combine controllers. Saved map. But when I go to the game I can only use one controller. I'm missing a step somewhere. Am I supposed to be transferring a file to a different folder or something?

Any help appreciated,

ufolev - Hi, I hope you are keeping well, especially during this current climate. We had some interesting times for sure, especially when testing Comanche Gold multiplayer methods. No need to thank me, whatever I've done couldn't have been achieved without other good people like yourself.

Dragon36 - I don't have any experience with multiple controllers or mappings, so unfortunately can't add anything. I don't even have an idea of what may need to be done.
