I thought I had seen pretty much every photo, but there were many that I had never seen before. https://www.theatlantic.com/photo/2014/04/world-war-i-in-photos-aerial-warfare/507326/In the seventh picture, I can’t figure out what is on the top of his helmet.

An early GoPro. Quite a few new photos, thanks OG.:

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I'd never heard of a Pfalz Dr.I

Most interesting. Glad you posted this as I have some photos taken by wife's grandfather on his return to the Western Front post-armistice when he was tasked with materiel retrieval and removal via the light railway system he administered during the conflict from Base Establishment. One location I couldn't identify was revealed to be the Ypres Barracks as seen in image 43. thanks for the link OG!

I'd never heard of a Pfalz Dr.I Most likely an editorial mistake. No, I looked it up. There was both a Pfalz and a Fokker Dr.I

Interesting because from the pic the plane looks exactly the same as a Fokker Dr.1. I guess the plane was the same but the manufacturer was different so hence the name change.,

The Pfalz also has a rounded fuselage, while the Fokker is more angular.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Photo #14 is quite harrowing to see to say the least. As is #29

About that Pfalz DR1, they only made the one prototype and although it wasn’t considered good enough to put into production, that one was sent to a squadron for use. What a different attitude back then. Fly whatever is available.
