Sir Stirling Moss: Motor racing legend dies aged 90 after long illness

Quote
British motor racing legend Sir Stirling Moss has died at the age of 90 following a long illness.

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time, even though he did not win the World Championship.

Moss retired from public life in January 2018 because of ongoing health problems.

"It was one lap too many, he just closed his eyes," said his wife Lady Moss.

Moss previously spent 134 days in hospital after suffering a chest infection while on holiday in Singapore in December 2016.

He won 16 of the 66 F1 races he competed in from 1951 to 1961.

I know a friend of his who said he was fading for some time now.
One of the all time greats who miraculously survived a deadly era.
Current F1 driver Sebastian Vettel would go and visit him with no fanfare.
RIP Sir Sterling.

One of the last gentlemen of racing. He shared a Maserati Type 61 with my other favourite gentleman of the sport, Dan Gurney, in 1960, winning the Nürburgring 1000 km. His 1955 Mille Miglia was simply epic! Imagine driving for ten hours at an average of 100 mph. Now, imagine Italian country roads in 1955, and your car having drum brakes and no crashworthy structure whatsoever. Serious skill involved! And then forfeiting the 1958 F1 world title by convincing the race marshals that your rival did in fact not break the rules re-entering the track after an off, thus losing by ONE point to Mike Hawthorn. Sportsmanship like that is simply not seen today.

RIP Sir Stirling. My heroes are leaving us one by one.. frown

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Semmen said it all. A great gentleman in the true sense of the word. I am not certain that his like exists in sports now. " He just closed his eyes"

RIP sir

Naunton Beauchamp Worcestershi...
A true Bitish legend.
Many English motorists stopped when caught speeding by Plod have been greeted with the quip "'oo do yoo think yoo are, Stirling Moss?"

One of the last Legends from the times when sex was safe and racing was dangerous... he set a stellar example how to be a sportsman.

I first learned of Stirling Moss as a youngster, in a boys book on auto racing and a chapter on his race at Monaco in 1961. He finished racing years before I was born.
But from that book till today, Stirling Moss was a hero to me.
Rest in Peace Sir Stirling.

Was fortunate to meet both Dan Gurney and Stirling Moss at a car event in Newport, Rhode Island in 2007. Moss was very talkative and a real pleasure to meet.
Gurney had a gentle dignity to him. Two legends for sure.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Last year Charlie Whiting and Niki Lauda, this year Stirling Moss....

On one hand i'm sad, on the other i'm glad they could die at such a high age. Legends from a time where every race at least 1 person was killed.

His house was absolutely insane, with gadgets throughout: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9C2T0ObRzU

When he fell down the elevator shaft 10 years ago and landed in the intensive care, I though that would be it. He cheated death for another 10 years though

It's a miracle Lauda made it to 70 when you consider the hell his body went through with the tragic accident in 1976.
