The "realistic" in the name of the mod is not because of historical realism but how the tracer rounds and smoke "would" appear if used. For historical realism disable this mod and uncheck incendiary rounds in the mission briefing window.
Hi JJJ65,
Thx for your reply.
I've subsequently searched this forum and others for threads about tracer and incendiary rounds, and the consensus seems to be that both sides were using some sort of tracer and/or incendiary round from 1917 onwards:

At 150 yards he pressed the triggers.
The tracer bullets cut a streak of living fire into the Pfalz's tail. Raising the nose of his aeroplane slightly
the fiery streak gradually settled into the pilot's seat."
The tracer rounds at this time were phosgen and appeared as smoke rather than colour apparently.
Seems to be a source of some debate, however, and I haven't come across anything definitive, certainly nothing photographic.
