We have 1 1/2 lbs of ground beef. What to do with it? We always make burgers or hamburger helper or spaghetti sauce or chili. Need a change.

Shepherds pie
Brown the ground beef with onion and then add chopped/sliced carrot, then add some beef stock and a small tin of tomato concentrate, herb with some thyme and rosemary then add some peas thicken the sauce and let simmer.

Meanwhile boil up some potatoes for mash, mash with butter and a lot of milk to make them quite creamy,

Pre heat the oven to 180c other temperature scales are available

in an oven dish pour in the the minced beef mixture then layer the potatoes on top to seal the mince in, then place in the oven ad bake until the potatoes are just starting to brown.

Enjoy!

It is delicious, however, it isn't quite shepherds pie since that would be made with lamb instead of beef.

Apricot Tart Tatin for desert this evening also made a Flan de Saint Jean de Minervois last night, it is in the fridge just now and won't be turned out until the meal.

(Flan de Saint Jean de Minervois is really a big crème caramel with a touch of alcohol) smile

Was watching a TV series with the story in London and one of characters order a full English breakfast.

I eat a big breakfast when I can: eggs, bacon or sausage, toast with butter and marmalade or sometimes pancakes, juice. Thought I was a pig.

But look what the English eat at breakfast!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_breakfast

Quote
A full breakfast is a substantial cooked breakfast meal often served in the UK and Ireland that typically includes bacon, sausages, eggs, black pudding, baked beans, tomatoes and mushrooms, toast and a beverage such as coffee or tea.

Beans in the morning? Not a good idea for some peeps!

All this too!

Try an Ulster Fry - heart attack on a plate as they say smile

I love the Tattie Scones but they are really fattening and you can't get them here in Belgium - thank goodness wink

Before I retired and was out on the road a lot it was full english breakfast and skip lunch and a light supper.

When I was working in and around Glasgow, you had to know where the "Bacon Roll factories" were, they were like an ice cream van but converted to cook food and there were a good number around Glasgow, the best one I knew of was at Nitshill industrial estate, people would make big detours just to find that delicious bacon roll or variation of it. There was a factory on that estate that was owned by a Jewish person and one of his staff used to go to that van and get a bacon roll in a brown paper bag and then go to the factory and hand it in to the owner through the window of his office so no one would see him eating bacon.

Ulster Fry, found 3 on it and they all look different and soooo YUMMMY

https://palatablepastime.com/2017/03/10/ulster-fry/

https://www.lavenderandlovage.com/recipe/the-ulster-fry-traditional-irish-breakfast

I can see folks making that full English breakfast on the weekend but during the week when you are rushing in the morning to get to school and work, who has time to cook that much food and eat it? Maybe now with the virus and most folks are at home, I can see that being prepared and eaten every weekday morning.

You mentioned bacon and I looked: English bacon is not the same as American bacon and they are both not the same as Canadian bacon. I LOVE bacon. I don't care what country it's from. I LOVE bacon!

My sisters love to go to Costco to get their rotissierie chicken and they always end up leaving with more than just a chicken in their cart. Everything about their chickens.

@Alicatt: Can you actually get decent bacon in Belgium? Over here in The Netherlands I have to order it at a good butchers shop. The worse butcher shops make it either too thin, don't salt it or cut it from the pig's belly. The supermarket version is from some weird residue "spek". Thankfully a sandwich shop close to work has the most amazing bacon sandwiches: Drs. A in Leiden

Bacon, ah Bacon, it's not spek!

The spek we get here is like streaky bacon in the UK and not my favourite, look for "breakfast bacon" it is more like the back bacon we get in the UK but it tends to be cut very thin.

The deli in the old supermarket here used to do proper salted or smoked bacon that they cut to your choice, sadly they had to close when the supermarket was put out of business when the franchise owner decided to open a store in the town and close all their franchises.

Our town is more of a dormitory town, not much in the way of shops or that, the previous burgermeester seemed to be clearing out all shops etc from our local, he lives on the "high street" where there is one newsagent and one lingerie shop at either end of the street and that's it. Our new burgermeester had a beef with the old one as the old one forced him and his business out of the town. Since the new mayor took over there has been some redevelopment and new shops have opened a few months ago, so we now have an Aldi and an Action as well as a Colruyt ( the franchise owner from above)

Our town is two towns joined Hechtel and Eksel, I live in Eksel and the shops above are about 7km away in Hechtel

Is bacon in Belgium same bacon we get here in USA? Other countries definition of bacon is different than the USA's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon#Around_the_world

This is our bacon which usually comes from the pig's belly where in other countries, they have bacon from the side or the back part of the pig.

I don't get it. You just answered your own question with that wikipedia link. Are you just asking SimHQ members then to confirm whether that wiki info is correct or incorrect?
