One of my favorites, sorry that I never saw him in concert.

The rusty wire that holds the cork that keeps the anger in
Gives way and suddenly it’s day again
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done
Two suns in the sunset, hmph
Could be the human race is run

Saw him in concert once in the late 70's. It may have been an off night for him, or he may not have put his whole heart into the show because it was a small-town fair (albeit the biggest fair in the state since pretty much forever and regularly draws well over 400,00 people in the course of eight days) and he was at the top of the charts at the time, but I was terribly unimpressed with his performance (other than the singing).

Went to a Dolly Parton concert at the Universal Amphitheater not long after it opened. She got to "Islands in the Stream" and one of the band members told her that the backup singer who usually sings it with her had suddenly developed a throat problem but they had a replacement who could probably fill in. As you've undoubtedly guessed, Kenny Rogers walked out on stage. Dolly was absolutely floored and after the song Kenny explained that he happened to be in town and their managers got together and cooked the whole thing up.

Must have been when they converted it from an open air venue to closed. Sadly it was torn down several years ago.

He seemed like a good guy. I’d have sat down for a couple beers with him.

RIP Kenny. I never tried one of his fast food chicken places back in the 90’s. smile

Apparently the memory fogged a bit on when it reopened. The concert was right around the time "Steel Magnolias" opened. Dolly paused at one point to have several of her costars (Shirley MacLaine, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, and Olympia Dukakis if I remember correctly) stand.

Some great songs and he stood out at a time when country was having a heyday. I had an album of his hits and about wore it out when I was a kid.

I forgot he wrote Sweet Music Man. I recently found that The Grande Ole Opry still had their Saturday night show even with no audience. They do a tribute to Kenny.
