Steam.... Don't you have to 1. download their software and install it and have it running to 2. be able to play any games you get from them, free or purchased, and 3. constantly be connected to the internet at the same time?

I just went to see about registering and immediately before I was asked to create user ID and PW, to install their software.

No thanks. That is why I also don't have iTunes or any Apple software.

Thanks Mark. I may never play it but I like free and I'm not afraid to use Steam smile

NoFlyBoy,I agree with you about iTunes (I can honestly say it was one of the worst pieces of software I'd ever had the misfortune to use) and I avoid all Apple products, but Steam? As a gamer it's hard to avoid it but it's your choice.

Personally I think it's the best digital games service available today and has many fans on here.

I prefer the old way. Buy the game. Install it on my computer. Works without needing an internet connection and without having to install anything else.

You don't have to give them your real name or anything and you can create a gmail account just to use for Steam if you don't want to use an ISP one.
If you do find that you want to actually buy a game through Steam most supermarkets stock Steam cards so you don't even have to give them your credit card details

As for the always online thing. No, you will have to be online to download a game and be online the first time you start it but you can go to offline mode after that.
It may require you to go online every month or so to re verify you but no you don't need to be online all the time.

OK it's good to be careful about what you download and install and who you give your details to but sometimes the old saying about cutting off your own nose to spite your face holds true too. smile

Invent a time machine and go back to 1998 and stay there. That way you’ll never have to worry about any online distribution services or having to have an internet connection to play a game.

I get that smile It doesn't mean you can't do both. I think about Steam this way: from now on, with all my Steam games, I can install any of them on any machine I like with minimal fuss, whenever I like, how many times I like. Assuming an iNet connection.

You need iNet to install obviously, but when you have what you want you can always use Steam on offline mode.

So anyway, it’s a good game. I already have it, but need to finish it. Very well done, I don’t remember why I got sidetracked.
Cool that it’s free. Between steam, gog and epic, theres a lot to do for nothing these days.

Mark,

I noticed that the free offer also mentions that "Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris" is included. I downloaded the first game, but don't see the other title as available. Is it a DLC or a separate title that will become available later?

Regardless, thanks for the heads up.

Cheers

Steam is one of the best things to happen to PC gaming, ever.

It has a separate store page:

Tombraider 2013 reboot is a great game. I've played it almost twice. Fun adventure, combat, location, mystery. I liked the second one too. I had to return the third one because it ran horribly and crashed at a cutscene. I hope to play it in the future.

I don't have the Temple of Osiris game though. A SimHQ member some time ago gifted me the Guardian of Light which this is a sequel to so that's pretty nice. I'm not sure how it plays though being top down. I guess its sort of action/adventure puzzle.

Thank you for the notice Mark.

1998?

Unfortunately, I didn't experience what must have been an exciting time for flight simmers, jumping from the early-to-mid-90's (F-117 and EF2000) to the early-2000's.

Most sims from 1998 or around that time were DRM-free (Falcon 4.0, Jane's F-15/F/A-18, Jane's USAF, Flanker 2.x, EEAH/EECH, TAW, Jane's WWII Fighters, EAW, Mig Alley, etc.).

I'd probably do Steam if I were a modern gamer, although I dislike the online tether.

A YouTuber I sub to tried streaming Temple of Osiris once in co-op mode and it was horrible, they gave up after a while it was so bad.
I still grabbed it because FREE but I seriously doubt I'll ever install it

Canada, eh!
You can absolutely run steam offline, it's a legit option in settings.

Some games (like Kerbal Space Program) can be copied or moved from Steam to a totally different folder/drive and ran from there.
