Intel says it will catch up with AMD

Promises Full Memory Encryption in upcoming CPUs

Intel refers to its version of full-memory encryption as TME (Total Memory Encryption) ... these features are vaporware.. there are still no real-world processors that offer them.

[Intel] didn’t mention AMD of course but [AMD] has had something similar since 2016 called SME (Secure Memory Encryption).

Intel's slides about their own upcoming full memory encryption are labelled "innovations," but they just catching up to what AMD already has done.

Mysterious NVIDIA graphics cards with 108 and 118 Compute Units spotted

The graphics clocks are only reported at 1.11 and 1.01 GHz

The 118 CU graphics device has scored 184096 points in the [Geekbench] OpenCL benchmark, which puts it at the very top of the current leaderboard., which may not actually sound that surprising considering this is TESLA, not Quadro or GeForce.

AMD to Introduce New Next-Gen RDNA GPUs in 2020, Not a Typical 'Refresh' of Navi

AMD CEO Lisa Su dropped an interesting announcement during the company's earnings conference last night: AMD will soon release its next-gen RDNA architecture.

Su .. said the company would announce more details at its Investor Day on March 5, 2020. Su also said we could expect new data center GPUs in the second half of 2020, too.

How "soon" is "soon" -- one would think by June. If its the "big" GPU, good, I was expecting late Summer or Fall for the top end GPU. More news Thursday March 5

Tom's Hardware's performance/price opinion:

Quote
Best Graphics Cards for Gaming in 2020

$1044: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti = Best Overall / 4K (When Price is No Object) = Smooth performance at 4K, High Settings

$500: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super = Best for VR Gaming = Better-than-2070 performance without the Founders Edition tax

$310: AMD Radeon RX 5700 (8GB) = Best for 2K Gaming = Roughly 11% faster than GeForce RTX 2060, on average

$280: AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT = Best for 1080p Gaming = Beats out the RTX 2060 in most titles

$110: AMD Radeon RX 570 (4GB) = Best Budget GPU = Ample memory (4GB GDDR5) proves valuable in comparisons to GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

Prices in quick check of today's good deals (tomorrow may be different). Of course, the standings will change as AMD and Nvidia introduce newer models.

Intel Says Process Tech to Lag Competitors Until Late 2021, Will Regain Lead with 5nm

CFO George Davis presented at the Morgan Stanley conference yesterday covering a wide range of topics, but noted that despite being "undoubtedly in the 10nm era," the company felt that it would not reach process parity with competitors until it produces the 7nm node at the tail end of 2021. Davis also said that Intel wouldn't regain process leadership until it produces the 5nm node at an unspecified date.

However, Davis noted that in spite of the shipping [10nm] products and pending "+" revisions to the 10nm process, its process node still lags behind competitors,

The chart included with the article indicates TSMC will get to 5nm ahead of Intel. Other information says TSMC may be to 3nm when Intel hits 5nm (AMD CPUs and GPUs are fabricated by TSMC). So, we'll see how this turns out in a couple years.

AMD has begun its Financial Analysts Day presentations. As this is written, they are ongoing. A couple quick points:

Quote
AMD's RDNA 2 [GPU] Gets A Codename: “Navi 2X” Comes This Year With 50% Improved Perf-Per-Watt

First and foremost, RDNA 2 is when AMD will fill out the rest of its consumer [GPU] product stack, with their eye firmly on (finally) addressing the high-end, extreme performance segment of the [GPU] market.

But don’t call it "Big Navi". RDNA 2 isn’t just a series of bigger-than-RDNA (1) chips. The GPUs, which will be the codename “Navi 2X” family, also incorporate new graphics features that set them apart from earlier products.

Overall, AMD has significant ambitions with RDNA 2, and it shows. The architecture will be the cornerstone of a generation of consoles, and it will be AMD’s first real shot in the last few years at taking back the flagship video card performance crown.

My opinion: The attached slide may turn out to be the important one that shows how AMD high end graphics FPS may catch up to Nvidia (not necessarily surpass Nvidia).

Nvidia GPUs have competitive gaming graphics and mediocre compute relative to AMD GPUs in the same price range. Nvidia also has lower power usage. That's because Nvidia uses most of its gaming GPU die for gaming graphics.

AMD has been supplying GPUs that "do it all" at the expense of maximum gaming FPS and minimum power use.

As the slide shows, now, AMD gaming GPUs will focus on gaming. In other words, more transistors for gaming, fewer for compute, and less power consumed (they're saying a 50 percent power efficiency boost).

The new AMD high end GPUs are due in late 2020.

New AMD Side Channel Attacks Discovered, Impacts Zen Architecture

The researchers claim that the vulnerability impacts all AMD processors from 2011 to 2019

We've become accustomed to news of new Intel vulnerabilities being disclosed on a seemingly-weekly basis, but other processor architectures, like AMD and ARM, have also been impacted by some vulnerabilities, albeit to a lesser extent.

The researchers were able to exploit the vulnerability via JavaScript run on Chrome and Firefox browsers. The paper suggests several possible remedies for the vulnerability through a combined software and hardware approach

All modern processors have vulnerabilities, they are the most complex devices designed by humankind, after all, so crafty researchers will continue to find holes in the architectures.

After posting the above, the very next site I clicked had this one:

Quote
Intel Has an Unfixable Chipset Security Flaw. Is it a Risk?

Positive Technologies have discovered a significant flaw in Intel chipsets dating back at least five years. The flaw is reportedly completely unfixable because it’s hard-coded into the mask ROM

an attacker effectively requires physical access to the machine in order to carry out this threat..the chipset key extraction hasn’t actually been carried out yet

But as a matter of practical threat or risk, these CSME bugs aren’t likely to cause problems for anyone in their day-to-day lives.

As usual, normal PC users/gamers have nothing to worry about.

While there have been many Nvidia GeForce GPU rumors the first couple months of the year, they didn't have good credibility.

Today's article seems credible. Moreover, they also note that the previous rumors may have been misleading.

The title says most of it (the rest of the article is heavy speculation):

Quote
NVIDIA GeForce Ampere GPU Rumors: Samsung 10nm Process Node, Q4 2020 Launch, RTX 3080 Ti Up To 40% Faster Than RTX 2080 Ti, Ray-Tracing Across Entire Lineup

NVIDIA's next GPU architecture will be based on the Samsung 10nm process node and not go with TSMC [7nm] as reported earlier

So, this fall/Winter we may have both the new 10nm Nvidia GPUs and new "high end" 7nm AMD GPUs to choose from -- as expected.

This nominally factual info is cut/pasted because TSMC makes AMD CPUs and GPUs. So TSMC's future = AMD's future in some ways. 5nm and 3nm are on the way:

Quote
TSMC’s Total 3nm Investment Will Equal At Least $23 Billion – Report

TSMC's successful partnership with AMD and Apple has gained the company fame in the tech world, especially with Intel Corporation's production woes ending as slowly as possible.

5nm volume production will ramp up in the first half of this year, and at the same time, TSMC will also commence the construction of its 3nm plant.

No information on when AMD will move to 5nm -- one might assume late 2021 -- we'll see.

Intel is still refusing to pay.

It was this court battle that made me an AMD fan. In brief, Intel paid PC makers to NOT use AMD products -- at a time when AMD CPUs were superior to Intel CPUs. It nearly put AMD out of business and allowed Intel to keep prices high for consumers/gamers.

Intel lost the case years ago, but Intel has yet to pay the fine. So, AMD came even closer to failure. I can't support Intel after that. Parenthetically, just information as I don't expect others to see things my way.

Quote
Intel Is Still Fighting the EU Over Its Anti-Competitive Actions Against AMD

In 2009, the European Commission found that Intel had abused its market position with respect to AMD and slapped the company with a €1.06B ($1.45B at 2009 exchange rates) fine. In 2014, the General Court of the European Union upheld the judgment.

Back in 2009, the EC found that Intel’s behavior was so self-evidently abusive, and its practices so filled with “naked restrictions” on AMD, it did not need to perform a full AEC test but provided one anyway.

A head to head test for mainstream gaming:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600X vs Intel Core i5-9600K: Mid-Range Rumble

Battle for the mainstream

Intel's Core i5 and AMD's Ryzen 5 families are the biggest volume-movers in the mainstream desktop segment, and honestly, that's the most chip most gamers need. But then the eternal question arises: Who reigns supreme in the mid-range, AMD or Intel?

Features -- Winner: AMD
Motherboard Options -- Winner: AMD
Overclocking Potential -- Winner: Intel
Cooling Solutions -- Winner: AMD
Gaming Performance -- Winner: AMD
Productivity Performance -- Winner: AMD
Value Proposition -- Winner: AMD

The Bottom Line -- Overall Winner: AMD

it's not typical to see an AMD processor excel in both the gaming and productivity departments, but the Ryzen 5 3600X is the leader on both sides of the ball.

AMD launches Ryzen 4000 Mobile Renoir processors with 7nm Vega iGPU

Laptops based on Ryzen 4000 Mobile will go on preorders today, however, it may take few weeks for them to be widely available. AMD releases more information on the architecture itself. AMD also confirmed Ryzen 9 4900H flagship CPU.

The Ryzen 4000 Mobile is based on Zen2 architecture, a refined version designed specifically for laptops.

AMD claims 25% IPC gain over Ryzen 3000M, 20% lower SoC power, 2x higher power efficiency, and 5x faster state switching. But the integrated graphics received a substantial boost, all Renoir CPUs use 7nm Vega graphics.

The article summarizes the details point by point. Given that AMD CPUs are now the top CPUs (in general) and given that AMD on CPU chip graphics is now the top (of that type), folks needing a cost effective, powerful laptop might consider AMD with a 4000 series processor.
