Finally got off my duff and started a campaign. First mission was convoy patrol and it was brilliant! Never saw Jerry but it did not matter. Took off from Hawking and spent the entire mission trying to keep in formation, scan for bandits and then land back at base. It followed EXACTLY the description I’ve read of a rookie pilot’s first mission. Second mission was defensive patrol of a airplane factory. Jerry showed up this time in the form of a flight of Me-110s. Got into a scrap with one that I eventually downed but not before the rear gunner blew a hole in my oil tank forcing me to bail out after the motor seized up.
I’ve spent decades reading about the Battle of Britain, starting about age 10 with Duel of Eagles. This time I got to be transported back in time and be there. Thanks a ton for that! Keep up the outstanding work!!.
Ah, another Duel of Eagles fan; Peter Townsend's book is still one of the best and he was there.
What squadron are you with, old bean?
I came a cropper after some weeks with 65, inspired by Olive Gordon's 'Spitfire Ace'. When my current Hun career also goes t*ts up as these things do, I'm thinking of joining 'Sailor' Malan's 74 Squadron; first choice would have been refighting in WotR Tom Neil's excellent 'Gun Button to Fire' but 249 isn't in the WotR ORBAT. Like the real pilots I didn't much like all that over-water flying in the 'convoys' phase; preferred starting in mid-August around Adlertag. Of course no reason we can't have two or more pilots and campaigns on the go at the same time. Anyway good hunting and do keep the boys here posted about how you're getting on, and maybe post a few pics of your adventures in WotR.
