Happy birthday Bo old man!
One thing I cannot be accused of is grinding. Since coming back to Elite two months ago I have really mixed up my gameplay. Every couple of days I seem to switch to some new activity. Combat, then mat gathering, a little mining, build a new ship, run some boom time, then a deep dive exploration trip to Colonia, more combat, some mining, a few assassinations, another new ship, then passenger missions, more mat gathering and trader visits, and so on and so forth. I don't get stuck on any one thing for long.
And I've now added another to the list. Scout hunting. I had the idea to buy a Diamondback Scout and turn it is to a scout hunter. I bought it, and A-rated it, but after a bit of theory-crafting, decided I didn't want to go through with engineering it, at least until I tried the scout combat to see what I'm getting in to. I didn't think I'd do so much of it that it warranted building a whole new ship for it. That, and I have Kraits!
So instead, I repurposed Poison Whiskey, my combat sweeper. for the role. The key for scout hunting is raw hull. Resistances mean nothing, and even shields are only partially effective. So you need some meat on the bones. In a virtuoso display of lack of self-awareness, I had only just removed the military grade armor from this ship and replaced it with heavy-duty stock alloy. The armor just isn't needed in PvE and slows me down. But it would have been nice for scout hunting.
So I removed all the weapons and the collector controller from the ship, and mounted two medium thermal vent beams stolen from my FDL, and a G5 heavy-duty 5D HRP from my Vulture. I then flew to Shinrarta, where I installed a C3 decontamination limpet controller, a Xeno-scanner and three C3 turreted AX multicannons, and then flew to Maia to hunt some bugs.
I kept the C5 scoop and C5 GFSDB to get to Maia, which is a bit of a hop of course. After arriving in Maia I docked at Obsidian, only to find out there is no outfitting there. That's odd for a full-size station. So then I flew to Moni's Hub, where I dropped the scoop and FSD booster, and replaced them both with 5D HRPs. I put G4 heavy duty on each, bringing total integrity to around 3,100, and then took off to hunt some scouts.
I FSS'd the system and there were NHSS everywhere. I dropped in to a threat 3 and found my first scouts. They were not too much trouble, but I didn't avoid the caustic clouds at first and needed the decontamination limpets and those work as advertised, removing the caustic goo and even repairing the hull by a point. I then hit several more, having the most fun in the threat 4 instances, and by the time I wrapped it up I had gotten my first 21 thargoid kills.
Glad to have given it a go, and I plan to hang around for a couple days and run up the score. Poison Whiskey is plenty of ship for this, the scouts aren't hard, but damage is inevitable, so the right ship is needed. My hull had been shot down to 64% at it's lowest. Good stuff.

Hmmmm Scout hunting... I have always thought this would be a good way to up my Combat Rank since all the Scouts are ELITE...but I never really pursued it.

Bo had a Birthday? Happy Birthday!!!! I assume the cake next to his username means today is his birthday, but he could have lied on the application in order to get gifts and well wishes.

Happy Birthday Bo!
DB my next activity when (and if! lol) I get back from Sag A is to do some bug hunting, I'll be interested in reading your exploits!

Hey JC, sure thing and I started a thread about it. Scouts are not hard as long as you have a suitable ship built for the purpose. If I had done more of this earlier in my Elite career I'd be triple Elite for sure. Its one of those things in Elite, and there have been quite a few, where the impression I had formed in my mind proved more daunting than the thing in reality. It was the same way with rescue missions in burning stations. They seemed daunting and then I did them. Same with scouts. The unknown.
But with a good ship they pop pretty fast and the pace is manageable. As long as you have a way to get the goo off it's pretty easy really.

Don't feel like starting a new thread, but I've been out for a while, since June, and I noticed that CGs have returned. What's up with these? Are they better, worse or about the same as the old ones? Who is taking part in the new CGs?

How come? What is it about them that made you draw that conclusion?

The latest CG (ending today) was kind of a BUST...
- Cargo Hauling to a station 46,000 light seconds from the Star? No thanks - Bounty hunting with NO REZ zones. We did a fair amount at INSTALLATIONS that spawned scenarios with WANTED ships but sometimes the scenarios took a long time spawn and if you accidentally clipped the installation, you could get a bounty and have to run off to the IF to clear it. Bounty take per unit time not as good as a decent HIGH or HAZ res..and did I mention you had to travel 46,000 LS to turn in your bounties since the Installations owned by the controlling Faction were that far away?

So what's your take, could you say whether you think the new system is better or worse? Just curious, and I guess I'd need to try them myself. I reckon the big update will bring me back, especially so if there are cool new ships in it.

Honestly there isn't much difference in the "new" CG's. They reverted back to the older model because the new one (which I never participated in) never seemed to drive any excitement. This CG was pretty much like the older ones, just in a really crappy system for both cargo hauling and bounty hunting. Back in the day, I could get excited about the possibility of making MILLIONS of credits from a CG, now, the money is meaningless, its just SOMETHING TO DO WITH FRIENDS...
Now if they upped the rewards for CG's to BILLIONS, maybe that would be something.. but even so, I really don't need more credits. I am not buying a FLEET CARRIER and if I wanted a new ship like a CUTTER or a TYPE 10, I could buy it..

How come? What is it about them that made you draw that conclusion? The amount of time it takes for your carrier to recoup the 2-3 billion invested plus running a carrier involved a lot more micromanagement than I was willing to devote my time to.

He was asking about CG's (Community Goals) not FC's (Fleet Carriers). I agree with you 100% on Fleet Carriers
