February 28, 1917

Ganz awoke in the hospital. His leg hurt something terrible. As the clouds in his mind cleared he remembered the terrible day before. His flight were about to take off when bombs exploded around the field. A pair of Coudron’s were bombing Uterte. Flight leader Barenfanger pushed his throttle forward and the others followed suit. As soon as they were airborne a flight of Triplanes pounced! Ganz turned on ones tail and began firing when bullets slammed into his machine and flesh. He knew he had to get down in a hurry. He turned toward the airfield but was coming in way too fast. He hit the throttle again to go around and bullets hit his machine again. He dared not look back but jinked to throw off his aim. Finally he side slipped and came in over the hangers hitting the field. He skidded on His left wing and came to a jarring stop next to the trees at the edge of the field. He was aware of people pulling him from his machine as everything went black.

Raine, breast reduction? Any man performing such a surgery should be shot. He’s a traitor to his own kind.
I like this Irish Major, he knows what whisky should taste like. You got off Scott free and I hope you will not Welsh on your promise.
BTW, where are all those skilled German pilots coming from. Most are either dead in their Halberstadts or chasing after nurses in hospitals?
Wonderful description of the dogfight and a hearty congratulations on the latest two kills. Unfortunately Wade paid the price. Maybe he’s just been detained by a lovely farm girl looking after his wounds? No?

Seb, so the two great pilots have finally met. And there is a mystery afoot. Hopefully in the next chapter realizes they’ve missed the double ‘n’ in monnths which would make more sense of the message ‘use a iron’. REALLY isn’t misspelled so why add it? There is also an ‘s’ missing after ‘three day’. And why is one Pastor capitalized and the other one not? I’m not helping, am I?

Grishin, 10 screenshots too many? What do you mean? wink
Excellent report and congrats on your first claim. Here’s hoping for a confirmation.

And Carrick is enjoying himself. More ladies, more wine.

MFair, oh no! Not another Hun in hospital! I’m glad at least that Gunther is alive. Those Tripes are a menace (hee hee!)

68 confirmed kills

The scramble bell continued to clang, but Toby couldn’t hear it over the roar of the engines. They were all lined up at the edge of the airfield, ready to take off. He lifted off first, then his wingman, Bristed and then the rest. The sun was beating on them but with the brisk, frigid wind it made no difference. Then he saw them. At first just the anti-aircraft explosions, then the enemy planes themselves. High above, at least at 10,000 feet. They were never going to catch them, but it was worth a try. Toby was already climbing to 3,000 feet. He looked back to check on the rest of the flight. He couldn’t see them. They must be somewhere below, trying to match his pace. 4,000 feet. ‘Anne’ was making good time. They were now close to the frontlines, but the Huns were already crossing the No-Man’s Land and getting away. 6,000 feet. Why is it taking so long? He could see the receding silhouettes of the DWF’s. They were far into enemy territory now. Toby looked back again only to see the rest of his flight far behind. He was about to turn back when he noticed another dot above the NML flying south. There were 3 more dots above. He knew it was an escorted recon flight, but from which side? As if on command he had his answer. Grey puffs exploded near the three dots. Huns!
He was now at 8,000 feet and getting close to the Boche planes. The reconnaissance machine turned east and one of the escorts detached from the formation and dove to meet Toby, then a second one. The German plane came up fast, but did not engage. He continued passed Toby towards the rest of the flight. That only left the one in front of him. The fight was on. Toby immediately recognized his foe as an Albatros. It was a D.II model. The wings were square and the radiators were sticking out on the sides of the fuselage like big ears. It was the older model of the Albatros, but still very capable. The German pilot had no problems keeping up with the Tripe. His turns were just as tight and none of them could get on the other’s tail. As soon as Toby turned, the Hun was turning the other way and they continued to pass each other head on. Toby started to anticipate his foe’s turns and turned earlier to end up just behind him. The German pilot was experienced and realized what Toby was about to do. He slowed down his turn just as Toby’s Tripe flew in front of his guns. Mulberry felt the plane buck as the bullets hit the wings and the fuselage. Something had been damaged. His rolls to the right were sluggish and he couldn’t keep up with the Albatros anymore. He was angry with himself for making such a rookie mistake, perhaps he was overconfident and didn’t expect his adversary to put up much of a fight. If he gets out of this alive he’ll have to pay more attention and treat each enemy as an Ace. Speaking of which, the skillful German made a mistake of his own and allowed Toby to send a quick volley into his fuselage. The rounds must have done some damage and the Albatros dove for the deck at a rate Toby’s Tripe could not maintain. He watched from above as the Boche reached safety of his own lines. Toby was mulling over a decision. Follow or disengage and run for home? Normally this would be a simple choice with a damaged plane like his, but this time he had the full strength of his flight, who were now forming behind him. Mulberry dove after his foe, who was now skimming the tops of the trees on his carefree trip to the aerodrome, not suspecting an entire flight of Tripes approaching his rear. Toby was getting close. He leaned into his Vickers’ gunsight and lined his plane with that of his enemy ahead. Not yet. Wait! Just a bit more ... Now! He opened fire, bullets ripped into the fuselage and wings. After that barrage, the enemy pilot dove into the ground below, disintegrating on impact. There was no way the rest of his flight would not see that. That kill surely would be confirmed.

Yes Sir. Ganz forgot in his dazed state at hospital. Corrected. He is hoping for some sort of bling for bringing in an intact Pup and the capture of a Flight Commander. But that’s up to the fairies. I here they wear boots. You gotta believe me.

MFair, the Gong Fairy seems very stingy with the bling. Look at Mulberry, not a single piece of metal from the allies. By now he should have French/Belgian/Italian/Russian bling dangling from his ample chest. There IS room!

Folks should be excited about getting bling. Handing out gongs like penny candy would rather defeat the purpose of this campaign, seeing as how we're trying to bring things closer to "how it must have been" for our RL counterparts. To that end, some of the adjustments we've made concern the threshold numbers and outstanding actions it takes to reach certain gongs. Those numbers and values are higher than they were in RL due to the fact that we sit warm and comfy at our flying desks, without wind buffeting us all about, without oil and unburnt fuel spraying in our faces, without the many other hardships WWI airmen had to deal with daily, not the least of which the fear of actually being killed. So yes, it may seem like the Gong Fairy is stingy, however we here at DID HQ prefer to think of him as frugal. biggrin

Now a correction to Ganz: he’s only been awarded the EK2c at his point, though the EK1c is coming his way soon to be sure. There may be one or two other gongs in the works as well for some of our other, less patient pilots. winkngrin

Wonderful reports, episodes, videos, and pics Seb, Fullofit, Raine, Harry, Mfair, and Carrick - most enjoyable as always.

And welcome grishin to the DID campaign. Super batch of screenshots, and no, ten is not too many.

As for Captain Swanson, he is at long last on his way back to England, having been a “guest” of the Dutch for the last two months, (that’s how long the sim said he had to be there for after his blizzard misadventure at the start of the new year). New episode to follow soon.

Hi Chaps, As February draws to a close (and March starts) it’s not going so well for the Luftstreitkräfte! With Collins shortening the war two Albatros at a time and even our raids on Toby’s base are being swotted away! And news fresh just in Captain Swanson is soon to be back, heaven help us! With Seb and Granz both in hospital and Lazlo there of his own free will (Nurse Higginstein) we’ve only got Falkenrath keeping our German end up! (Sorry Harry). Great pics Grishin, I hope it gets confirmed and like Fullofit I’m loving the screen shots!

Fullofit! You got it old bean! I’m not sure how I can write you in to the story but you were right, ‘Use an Iron”. Of course the greatest mystery is why Karl wrote it all in English!

Sebastian von Toombs,
28th February 1
917

Kitty’s letter from Karl, has caused quite a stir in the ward, each chap in turn talking a look at it. It was one fella in bed three, who spotted that Lazlo and I had missed a double N in month. Then everything began to make sense. In his letter Karl had told us to examine every word carefully to know what he was REALLY saying. And he was really saying “use an iron”. That didn’t make any sense until Lazlo returned from supper with Nurse Higginstein. When I showed her the letter she told me that she and her brothers as children would write secret messages with the nib of a pen dipped in milk on a sheet of paper. The writing was invisible until a hot iron was applied to the paper, the fat burnt and the message would be revealed. She ran to the laundry room, grabbed some coals from the stove and put them in the iron. After waiting for the iron to heat up we ironed Kitty’s letter and sure enough the message came through.

Kitty I’m planning to escape. Please send parcels each month, dried fruit, canvas bag and a compass needed. Dark civilian clothing. I’ll write more soon. Your loving brother Karl

I was very grateful for Lazlo and Nurse Higginstein’s help, and would not have solved the mystery with out them and the mysterious chap in bed number three. I wrote to Kitty at once explaining all we had found! I find the stimulation of the letter and meeting Lazlo has given me a new lease of life, I’m raring to get back to the front tomorrow (1st of March) albeit with a new cautiousness Which will hopefully get me through this war and home to Kitty.

I can’t wait to get back in my crate!
To be Continued...

Lou, how would those DID HQ types know what adverse conditions WOFF pilots are enduring when they themselves are sitting at their cushy desks drinking bottle after bottle of Pomerol? Perhaps to keep up with the demands of WOFF PE, some of us are forced to sit in a freezer to keep cool their overclocked 486 DX with 512 MB of RAM? To the Gong Fairy it may seem like some pilots are less patient, but to those with their boots on the ground, they prefer to think of themselves as most deserving.
Finally, Swany’s “vacation” was starting to get a bit long in the tooth. Soon we’ll be able to see him back in action, baring his teeth in anger while downing more Huns. Can’t wait.

Seb, let’s just say that fella in bed three figured it out before you had to write Mulberry into your story and leave it at that. Karl had to write in English. If he wrote in German, the Scotts would not be able to read it and censor it. Simples.
I was half hoping that the letter would catch on fire when they put the hot iron to it. Oh well, at least von Toombs is out of the hospital and can resume defending the honour of das Vaderland.

Last day in Paris. I went out to the Main City Airfield where the Nueiport Factory is housed looking at Production and experimental machines. All seem more advance then the N-17.

Citation to the award reads as follows:

Feldwebel Sebastian von Toombs is an incomparable pursuit pilot of magnificent bravery, which reflect the power and steel-hearted will of his ancestry. Since arriving at the front scant weeks ago his exploits have been prodigious, and he always presents himself as a fine example of tenacity and mutt. Despite being absent from the fight on more than one occasion because of crashes and wounds, his ferocious energy has not be dampened, and he returns each time to the fray, gaining victory after victory. To date he has accounted for the destruction of sixteen enemy flugmaschinen, and has submitted claims for ten more.
