I'm a fan of both movies (both released in 1987) and I never knew this was the same guy (Vincent D'Onofrio)...

[Linked Image]

==========
In 1986, D'Onofrio took on the role often considered the defining moment in his acting career, as Pvt. Leonard Lawrence, an overweight, clumsy Marine recruit in the movie Full Metal Jacket.

D'Onofrio gained 5 stone / 70 lb (32 kg) for the role, bringing his weight to 20 stone / 280 lb (130 kg). This remains the record for most weight gained by an actor for a film. While filming an obstacle course scene for the movie, D'Onofrio injured his left knee, compounded by the excessive weight, which required surgical reconstruction.

After filming of Full Metal Jacket was completed, having lost nearly all the weight gained for the movie in nine months, D'Onofrio went on to play Dawson, the owner of Dawson's Garage in Adventures in Babysitting (1987). He appears in one scene near the end of the film.

He needs an inner Gunny voice that tells him to lay off the jelly donuts. smile

Man, I just can't get over that being the same dude. And with the movies being released only a week apart (July 3rd and 10th, 1987), who would have guessed such a quick transformation? Incredible.

Going by theatrical release date is misleading. FMJ was actually shot in 1985 but the release was pushed back several months so it wouldn’t compete with Platoon.

In the real world, that’s called yo-yo dieting, falling off the weight loss/workout wagon and it’s looked at as failure. Start over!
If you’re an actor, you get award nominations. Go figure. LOL

.
Makes sense, but still an impressive transformation with losing the FMJ weight in only 9 months (averaging a little less than 2 lb/week).

Considering this...

"D'Onofrio gained 5 stone / 70 lb (32 kg) for the role, bringing his weight to 20 stone / 280 lb (130 kg). While filming an obstacle course scene for the movie, D'Onofrio injured his left knee, compounded by the excessive weight, which required surgical reconstruction."

...makes me wonder how uncomfortable he must have felt with the added weight while filming FMJ. Gaining or losing weight for a movie role isn't new, but gaining weight for a movie requiring physical exertion must have been rough, especially with not being used to carrying the additional weight (obviously was hard on his knees).

I remarked to him once how he actually was the first person to play Thor, not Chris Hemsworth, haha!

He also said that working with Kubrick was great, that he really allowed alot of improvisation aside from Gunny's lines. Several of the dialogue between Joker and him were improvised.

I don’t care for any of those crime/cop shows so for me I will always know Vincent primarily for FMJ and Men in Black.

I don't watch the cop shows a lot but with the slim choices on cable now days..Scroll through the channel guide ,,yeah 200 channels and see the same show on in four different places it sucks..but sometimes during the day i just feel like kicking back and watching something It's a case of chewing on the scraps,,,I suppose I could do streaming but I'd rather not try to figure it all out..The only thing that i have is Amazon Prime just need to figure out how to get it on the TV..I have wireless due to a desktop and laptop and should do the research to figure out how to make them play together
As to preferences to each his own,,i personally don't care for the SciFi stuff

Hollywood actors get top of the line (and very well paid) personal trainers/chefs/nutritionists to lose the weight quickly.

It's still admirable, you have to put in the sweat. Still, having someone else handling meals and coaching is huge. Not to mention the paychecks attached to pulling it off. Most of us have to do it on our own and for free. LOL

What an eye-opening link, even some additional info on Vincent D'Onofrio in FMJ.

Yikes on the damage that acting can cause to your body...

"Bale estimated going from about 185 to 228 pounds for "American Hustle." The actor also shaved his head, and slouched enough to accidentally herniate a disc in his back."

==========

At the bottom of that webpage is a link for the opposite...
SEE ALSO: Actors who lost weight for movie roles

Oh man, Bale again. Look at "Christian Bale stopped eating and exercising to drop 63 pounds for "The Machinist." He looks like walking death! eek2

==========

I don't understand why they don't just use actors/actresses who better fit the size requirements, unless a person's size/weight has to change in the movie like Tom Hank's "Castaway" and "Philadelphia". As RK is fond of saying (usually regarding women but also applies to men), we come in all different shapes and sizes. I take that to mean the differences in frame/skeletal, fat/muscle amount and distribution (assuming everyone having a reasonably healthy lifestyle). There are natural outliers at both extremes of normal, so why not use them for these roles?

Some are/were probably still too young to realize that health is *everything*. Although it looks like some at least kept themselves professionally monitored during the process, if not the first time around.

I'm feeling this way after just watching a show about the death of John Candy (43) while filming for a couple of months, a grueling and physically demanding movie in the Mexican heat, and at his worst health.

I would think the most difficult part is the eating when trying to lose. Workouts can be tough when you're not feeling it, but when you exercise with another person (in this case a trainer), you're held accountable. Even if with an equal partner, no one wants to be the one to say, "I don't feel up to it today." You'd feel bad for letting the other person down so you suck it up and do it, and almost always glad you did.

But food is something you can cheat on secretly, without your chef or partner knowing.

Candy died from a double whammy. He was obese for almost all of his adult life and his father also died young from a heart attack. So he had both the lifestyle and genetic factors stacked against him.
