Yesterday we went to Walmart (been a long time, was reminded why) and purchased what may be our last CDs (also haven't purchased a CD in a long time).

They had about a dozen CD's on a $5.00 rack and we each picked one...

Gonna check out more of the Highwaymen while wife is a fan of Countryfied Hootie (has lots of his singles). Good for Darius for successfully crossing over but I'm just not digging it, would rather hear anything off of "Cracked Rear View" (excellent album, IMO).

^ After three complete listens of both CDs, only the Darius has grown on me. This surprises me but that's how it goes sometimes (I'm the oddball who actually like Rush's "Test for Echo"). Maybe one day I'll check out his other albums as well as the other albums from Hootie & the Blowfish (looks like there were 5 more).

I continue to stumble over forgotten Country Classics that make me think, "Why isn't this song in there?"

I love the original country, country and western. I really detest whatever it claims to be now. There are still those out there doing things that are loyal and of the same spirit as what came before but they are not in the mainstream and whatever Nashville is now. Yuk!

One of my all time heroes is Marty Robbins who I grew up listening to. His voice is almost like family to me. I also grew up listening to songs of the cowboy and real Western music, new and old too. Folks like Michael Martin Murphy, Red Steagall, Don Edwards, Ian Tyson and so forth.

I also love Johnny Cash and have much admiration for him. I consider him a favorite preacher of mine. I'll always love his Gospel Road movie and faith-based songs. I also often listen to him at night reading the New Testament. However I adore his country hits as well. "Big River" is so good. He's written so many beautiful and powerful songs. Some of my favorites of his are "Flesh and Blood" and "When the Man Comes Around."

I'm also a huge fan of Mickey Newbury who pretty much defied genre, was his own genre and produced voluminous original works spanning themselves across a spectrum of genres. He was and is a real treasure as are these others.

I don't like everything he does but one of my favorite latter country guys is Dwight Yoakam. He is about the latest I like yet he himself has been going since '79 or early 80s I think. He definitely has his own sound but much of what he does is firmly rooted one way or another in tradition. He's one of those guys where if I'm in the mood for DY, I have a hard time getting his tunes out of my head. He's got some stuff that I don't like but most of it I enjoy. Its really feel good, catchy and mostly traditional rooted country with his own twang and phsychobilly sound.

I also like guys like Roger Miller. I love his version of "Ruby". I remember 20mm saying he was a big fan of Roger Miller. Willie Nelson is great too with his songwriting and his own sound. I love listening to him play trigger. I appreciate that he plays guitar very well but its still a little rough around the edges and buzzy which just makes it more earthy and natural to me. Even though I appreciate the musicianship and masterful level of skill of others he doesn't have the sound of error-less perfection which I appreciate equally in its own way.

This Willie Nelson performance I find enthralling including his guitar solo.

Some MMM.

Some Mickey Newbury.(would love to have been in that room on the second video!)

Johnny Cash

Several years ago I discovered the Glaser Brothers. What's interesting is that unbeknownst to me, I'd actually been listening to them along with Marty Robbins my whole life. It turns out Marty Robbins discovered them for himself as they were a performing a family and he hired them to perform with him while they were still very young and that includes them singing with him on his well known "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" Album which I've listened to since I was a kid.

Marty Robbins.

Love Hank Williams Sr. too. I wish we had more video of him.

Some Dwight Yoakam.

Nice, Coot. Love the classical guitar sound in some of those.

Although I have the Mason Williams original (guitar only) and Chet Atkins cover (w/small orchestra), I also enjoy this more modern version...

How is 'Country Music' defined?

From what I see, these seem to be the rules:
1. Country Music status is revoked on achieving mainstream appeal.
eg, 'Achy Breaky Heart' must be the Country-est sounding song ever written, but contravenes this rule, so doesn't make MarkG's list.

2. Male performers must have a big hat.
Yes, Garth Brooks, that's a big hat but you've broken rule 1.

3. Female performers must have a prominent 'Southern' accent.
Note. rule 1 waiver if physically attractive.

LOL, mikew. biggrin

Gotta throw one more rule in there for my personal list (which eliminates the artists you mentioned)...

4. With very few exceptions, 1990+ isn't listenable (preferably no later than mid-80's).

1993...just can't do it...

This is actually quite an observant and excellent post.

Needless to say, the "Country Music" from the 50's and 60's is almost an entirely different animal from the "Country Music" of today but then again this happens to all genres of music. They either change and adapt to stay relevant with mainstream audiences or they fade away into obscurity.

What I find especially funny are the Country Music artists who aren't even American and they put on a fake US Southern accent. Case in point: Shania Twain.

Good point, PM. I'd say there's also a big distinction between 50's/60's and 70's/80's Country Music.

To quote Hank Williams Jr. in "Family Tradition" (1982)...
"I am very proud of my daddy's name. Although his kind of music and mine ain't exactly the same."

My list is obviously 70's/80's. The 90's went in yet another direction and from what I can tell, many 90's Country Music fans don't like today's "Bro-Country".

I didn't take mikew's rules seriously because everything he listed is actually the opposite of what's in my list. smile

I certainly am at a loss to define what is Country Music. The genre to me seems to be full of cross-over influences like pop, rock, blues, jazz and gospel. Watching the Ken Burns documentary on Country Music probably just made me more confused. If an artist has covered a Carter Family song, is that sufficient credentials?

The genre Countrypolitan is very close to my heart; an example of which would probably be He Stopped Loving Her Today with George Jones. Another artist becoming famous for his Countrypolitan hits is mentioned in this thread by sadly underrated and termed as a mere "jouneyman" in said Burns documentary.

The eclectic qualities of influences from blues, jazz gospel, soul, R&B combined with a fabulous voice and a unique bluesy style of piano playing made Charlie Rich one of the most versatile and interesting artists in my opinion. His back catalogue is well worth visiting once you do, you realise that Behind Closed Doors and The Most Beautiful Girl were eclipsed by many wonderful songs written by Charlie or his Wife Margaret Ann.

Good post McGonigle and you bring up a really interesting topic about how difficult it can be to define Country Music. I'll expand on that and say further that it's very difficult to define any genre of music. I think that's why some genres like Metal have multiple sub-genres.

Yeah, I wouldn't know how to define Country Music either or how to classify any sub-genres. I only know my personal tastes.

I doubt these two songs shared a fanbase, but who knows...

Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart 1992...

The Highwaymen - Highwayman [1986] (American Outlaws: Live at Nassau Coliseum, 1990)...

EDIT: As so often it happens on YT, the sound quality of the Billy Ray Cyrus song sucks. So here are links to the official videos...

Looking back at mikew's post, I remembered that I'm also not a fan of Garth Brooks (remembering now that he did "Friends In Low Places" [1990]). Still better than the "Chattahoochee" song I guess, which you heard constantly if you were living in Atlanta, GA in the early-90's.

Not that I was ever a big Country Music fan to begin with, I just really didn't like the direction Country was going in the early-90's. I'm sure it's somehow Kurt Cobain's fault. smile

What also contributed to the quality and integrity of country music in my opinion was the quality of the character of many of its participants and their colorful and difficult backgrounds. Many of them came from that greatest generation or on the cusp of it. Many of them served in wartime or were in the service. Many of them came off the fields and farms and through the depression. It also matters what spirit is behind the music, what's motivating it. At least part of what makes great music great regardless of genre is its sincerity and the heart behind it. I believe music is a ministering tool. Lots of great music is born of hardship, experiences, purging of emotions, therapeutic processes and imagination as well. Most people still experience difficulty in some fashion or another as well as inspiration so there is still good music to be found and to be written. As someone mentioned, it also comes down to personal taste and what particular thing speaks to you. That's one of the many amazing fruits of the phenomenon of music, that someone may not take to this song or that genre but they are however drawn to something else. Its my opinion too that what makes a piece of music or song good is that its speaking the truth. I know that can be taken differently by many but I think most people in general can recognize something that's true and relate to it as opposed to something that feels put on or false.

Not a fan from country, but thats mainly because it is absolutely not promoted here in my country. One country song (I think its country) I realy like is from Carey Ann Hearst.
