Seb, socks off is a good sign. Are you anywhere near the said bed? Gently put the book on the floor and help your wife out of the rest of her clothes. That's better.

You folks are too funny! Now back to the war.

OStv Gunther Ganz
Feb. 21, 1917
Flanders.

Ganz should have been a happy fellow. His latest victory, a Strutter had been confirmed. He had taken hits in his engine and landed roughly at the edge of NML. His aircraft was destroyed and he was banged up a bit but all in all was healthy. With his 9 confirmed victories he was promoted to Offinzierstellvertreter. But, he was not a happy young man. It had been pouring rain for 3 days and the Jasta had been grounded. Ganz had to listen to the continuous singing of Carl Holler which he hated. Lorenzer, knowing Ganz’s dislike of the man urged him on at every opportunity.

Wulf announced the weather was clearing and he was putting every machine into the air tomorrow afternoon as soon as the weather allowed. Ganz muttered “Thank god!” Lorenzer head him and laughed, adding “I knew you would come around to my way of thinking Herr Ganz.”

Took off to attack a Rail Jct, but got jumped by 6 Huns. They just fell on us from upsun as we crossed NML Our cover flight of 3 Rovers lost 2 a/c for 1 Hun. B Flight lost 1 + 3 Damaged a/c for 2 Huns. I used up a drum keeping the leader's tail cleared then went to re load and got bounced by 2 Huns so spun out and ran. The Huns went home when Archie fired on them,

MFair, there is nothing like a good laugh. Congrats on Gunz’s latest confirmed kill. Stay away from Holler and even further from Lorenzer. It’s a good thing the weather is improving. All these aggressive feelings cooped up inside the man ... it’s not good.

Carrick, remember: Beware of the Hun in the sun!

Dear Toby,
Thank you for your lovely letter. I know you must be extremely busy, yet you still were able to find time to write to me. I miss you very much and each day I pray for your safe return. I am happy for you that you’re doing well and enjoying flying aboard ‘Anne’. Should I be jealous?
I am sorry to hear of the demise of your wingman Jack. May his soul rest in peace. I do hope his replacement, this Scudmore fellow is as skillful as Jack had been and will be of use in battle.
The life here is back to its old normal self. Emily continues to date the officers and there are plenty to choose. She complains they don’t treat her as well as that fellow Alford has. I don’t want to gossip but she seems to be gaining weight recently. She swears she’s eating very little. But enough about her. I visit often our place by the pond where we went to feed the ducks. I am looking forward to the time off from work. They are pushing us harder and harder, all to meet the quotas for the war effort, but I think they’re simply taking advantage of us girls. They wouldn’t dare to take advantage of men like that. Listen to me, all I do is complain about the conditions at home, meanwhile it’s not a picnic for the men fighting in the trenches ... and in the air. How I wish this madnesses would be over already!
The weather here isn’t cooperating either. For the past two days we had to deal with fog that wouldn’t lift. Hopefully you have more luck, although I hear Northern France weather isn’t that much better.
Well, I’d better be going. I have to wake up early tomorrow for the morning shift and Emily will most likely come home late making a lot of noise, as always.
Holding you in my thoughts and may God keep you safe.
Love,
Anne

MFair, Great news about Gunz’s latest confirmed victory. I'm so glad the weather is improving we got to get out and about!

Carrick, Well done, for getting out of there! I see they're still in Halbs, that may change soon.

Fullofit, Glad you've got your letter from Anne old chap, word of advice, don't leave your books on the bed, I find it cools your beloved's ardour somewhat.

After most of the week spent trying to keep dry and warm I managed a very quick circuit in my new DIII this evening just as the sun was setting. Hans has done an outstanding job on the paint work - and she flies like a dream! The Tommies need to beware, Thor is back!

Carrick, you gotta know when to fold em’.

Fullofit, Lorenzer is not a bad sort. He doesn’t wear his religion on his sleeve. Holler, on the other hand, it the worse caterwauling you ever heard! Nice letter from Anne.

Seb, I agree with Harry, nice paint!

Seb, ah, so no go with liberating your wife from the reminder of her clothing? You should have placed the book UNDER the bed.
I agree with others. Your D.III is a very nicely painted target.

MFair, Lorenzer is much worse than Holler. Holler does what he does - annoys people. Lorenzer eggs those annoying people on. Unforgivable.

The weather finally improved enough to be deemed navigable. They’ve been sent to patrol along the coast from St-Pol-sur-Mer to Gravelines. What’s the point of moving them closer to the Front if they’re going to send them this far back to their old aerodrome? No contact for obvious reasons.

OStv Gunther Ganz
Jasta 6
Feb. 22, 1917

Finally at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, the Jasta was airborne to patrol the friendly airfields in their sector in hopes of bagging an Englishman or Frenchman. After gaining patrol altitude of 3000m they headed northwest. Ganz checked his rear and noticed Flight Eins, flying above and behind being attacked by 7 hostile machines. He wagged his wings and pulled up and reversed direction. They were Sopwith Pups. He had never seen one in real life and now the sky seemed full of them. He entered the fight and the next 3 minutes were a blur of pot shots, twisting, turning and avoiding a collision. He saw one a few hundred feet below and dove on him. If he hit him with his burst he could not tell as the Pup quickly turned and they were in a turning fight. As they circled each other Ganz was aware that the Englishman was slowly gaining the advantage. Down came Wulf and Holler firing on the Pup which turned west as the two flashed past. It was the break Ganz was looking for and he pounced on the Pup’s tail and sent him spinning to the ground just west of their home field. It seemed everyone had had enough and both flights landed as the Pups headed west.

On the field Ganz approached Wulf and Holler. “I believe I owe you two a drink!” he said. “I’ll take you up on that Herr Ganz. After we go inspect your kill” replied Wulf. As they made their way to the smoking wreck Ganz turned to Holler, “Leutnant Holler, you can sing to your hearts content tonight!” Holler laughed, “that I will do Herr Ganz. That I will do.”

The smoking wreckage was not much to see. A tangled mess of blackened metal, burnt wood and a blackened shape which used to be a human.

Thanks chaps for the very nice comments about my paint-work! It was great to be able to spend a couple of hours on it yesterday and a bit more today!

MFair, Sounds like a hard fought victory. I've not yet met a Pup either (I think) in this play through and not looking forward to testing myself against their particular strengths. I already have a fear of Tripes!

Fullofit, Just want you to see the difference between Paul Strahle's Axe and my hammer so you know which one your shooting at!

carrick58, I just managed to avoid a tangle with your squadron (I think) as I was flying home, alone, with a coolant leak. "It was squeaky bum time" for sure!

"...I missed fresh air of the kind that can only be found 3000 meters up!"

22nd Feb 1917

Yesterday it was glorious to be out flying again, if only for 10 minutes. After the best part of a week stuck inside, shivering from the cold and wet. Worse than the rain or the cold was the cabin-fever, it set in about the third day. Initially we had fun and tried to make the most of it, but after a particularly rough football match played in the mess, in which three tables and eleven chairs were destroyed the Kommandant threw an absolute fit and ordered us to behave like gentlemen or face charges. After which we played cards for hours on end, smoked and filled the mess with an airless deep blue fug of tobacco smoke. Every once in a while a window would be opened, allowing fresh air in, and a brave soul his neck out, hoping to see an elusive break in the weather. All the while the constant pounding of the artillery landing a mere kilometre from our huts gave us a thumping headache. I missed fresh air of the kind that can only be found 3000 meters up!

Today promised to be fine for flying and it was we were up and breakfasted by seven thirty and in our planes by eight. Our mission was close air support escorting DFW C.V.s fromFA33. Almost immediately as we joined up with our DFWs I spotted two BE2c two-seaters flying below us. I thought to swoop upon them and them climb and rejoin the Jasta’s mission
[Linked Image]
About 0845 I attacked two BE2cs flying at low altitude near lens. I attacked the one closest to me at an altitude of 200 meters. After about 120 rounds the BE2 started to smoke and flames poured out of its left hand side. It twisted to the right and crashed into the front on the outskirts of Lens close to the BU road crossing and 600 meters East Northeast of the Lens Observation Ballon. 4km Southwest of the Lens Railyard. His number was 7631 and he had a full load of bombs.

"...After about 120 rounds the BE2 started to smoke and flames poured out of its left hand side."

I attacked the second BE2c who put up much more of a fight. The enemy aircraft was twisting and turning, ducking and diving. Most of the air battle took place at an altitude of between 50 and 200 meters. His observer managed to get a number of good shots off and my fuel tank was hit. After 300 rounds shot at fairly close range I forced him to crash land our side of the lines 1000 meters Northwest of the burnt-out factory on the western outskirts of Lens. He made a rough landing sinking nose down in the recently drenched waterlogged mud. His number was 7631 and he had a full load of bombs.

I was leaking fuel and coolant so made for Haubourdin airfield which was approximately 6-7 Kms Northeast of my location. As I approached the airfield I encountered a number of Tripes and some Nieuport scouts. I was in no condition to fight so dived low, skimming the hedgerows. Only one Tripe seemed to notice me and flew to intercept me as he flew at me I gave him a five second burst of my machine guns and he left me alone.

My engine gave out before Haubourdin and I made a smooth touch down in a field 500 meters Southwest of the airfield. With only light damage. I did miss my old DII today. The DIIIs higher wing position makes it much harder to see above the pilot, and this made it difficult today in taking down the two-seaters, where I find the only safe place to tackle them from is below.
[Linked Image]
I’ve put in two claims today. Both BE2cs

Feb 23,1917.

Business is picking up.

Morning escort 2 Fe's down to Lens, mixed it up with Huns ( 5 e/a's ) Our flight of 8 a/c were high and behind the bombers when a flight of Hun Scouts slashed down in front hitting the Fe's
We dove after them I emptied a drum after one then reloaded watching him. I gave him the old bounce and he smoked and headed down. Turning back to the fight, I had picked up a e/a on my tail so went down on the deck and ran
Losses: 1 Fe,+ 1 pilot from B flight wnd. Claims 2 e/a. My claim was reject as no one else saw it or report a burning a/c near enemy lines.

Afternoon: 2 a/c flight, but my leader returned to base so I went solo out in the Muck. Spotted and tried to attack one of those New Recon types, but lost him in the clouds and darkness.

MFair, better steer clear of those Pups. They are just as dangerous as those Strutters. Let your wingmen soften them up a little before taking them on.
Congrats on the promotion, BTW!

Seb, thanks for that clear distinction between your mount and Strähle’s. It will help with identification. I see the partying is still of legendary status. It must be that French booze.
Congrats on the two Quirks. That last one looks like it really hit some quicksand. I hope the crew is alright.
The D.II had another advantage over D.III beside the wing position. That lower wing was much more sturdy in a dive. Hopefully won’t have to find out for yourself.

Carrick, too bad about that rejected claim. Are you sure you brought him down? It’s not enough to just make him smoke.

On this fine day they were ordered to patrol enemy front lines between Nieuport and Verne. They didn’t even reach their first waypoint when Toby noticed two dots flying straight at them. The formation was too small for a Schwarm. They had to be friendlies returning from a mission or very unfortunate Hun two-seaters without escort. The dots made an abrupt about turn betraying them as enemy bombers. It was too late to run. Toby’s flight was already attacking. The flight split up and each two-seater was paired with two Tripes. Mulberry fired on the leader and watched one of his flight mates do the same. In the corner of his eye he saw the other bomber being harassed by the rest of the flight. Toby kept low, seeing as his mate continued to stick to the bomber’s tail. They were exchanging fire with each other, but the Tripe wasn’t making any progress. He just hung back while the two-seater was getting away further into enemy space. Toby had to step in. While the rear gunner was busy tracking his wing mate, Toby snuck in and took him out. The limp body of the gunner was lolling on the side of the fuselage with each movement of the plane. He knew he can now fire at the biplane with impunity. The top plane came off and the bomber went tumbling down with the entire bomb complement. The other team eliminated the second bomber and after running down the clock they all returned to Furnes.
No video. Stupid Nvidia Experience decided to log me out and I didn’t notice the capture stopped running. Bah!

23rd February - 24th February No flights again for a couple of days due to bad weather. It was more time spent on the ground. Hans and I used the opportunity to make a few changes to my albatros’s paintwork to differentiate it further from Paul’s Albatros, whose axe at a distance can look quite similar. We’ve repainted the hammer further forward so no mistakes now!

25th February 9:03am patrol over friendly airspace, with a focus on our airfield at Wynhene just north of Roulers. Beautiful flying day, although very cold. The front is particularly active near us and on take off we all received varying degrees of damage from ground fire. I was relatively unscathed, however, while climbing over Lille, Friedrich Geiger engine started to smoke and splutter and caught fire, he was last seen flying towards Lille. I hope he made it. We saw no other aircraft from start to finish. We were airborne for 90 minutes.

After landing, I was informed that both my claims of B.E.2cs have been confirmed! Drinks are on me tonight!

Today Toby’s wingman, Scudmore was temporarily assigned to the ‘A’ flight to fill in for a pilot on leave. The mission orders were simple. Escort 2 Quirks from RFC-6 on a recon flight over the front between Nieuport and Diksmuide.
Once up and after rendezvous with the two-seaters, the long escort flight started, interrupted at one point by ‘A’ flight taking care of a pair of German bombers. One of the Tripes collided with one of the Huns and the other one was shot down in flames soon after. It didn’t look good for the poor sod in the Tripe that had collided.

YouTube Link

The flight continued to be a bore until they chanced upon another German two-seater escorted by a pair of Albatroses. They immediately had forgotten about the Quirks and chased the Boche formation. One of the Albatrosen dove and made a large sweeping circle to get behind them, but his estimate was off and he ended up side by side with the Tripes. Toby banked to meet the intruder head on, while the rest continued the chase after the reconnaissance machine. Mulberry was on the Hun’s tail firing when the Albatros made a sudden change in direction. Toby had no problems keeping up but his Tripe came too close and the two planes touched. Toby’s starboard lowest plane was in shambles, but the plane was still under control. He disengaged and watched one of the wingmen continue the fight. In fact he was there all along shooting the Hun during the collision. Toby had a peaceful flight back and after a careful landing waited patiently for the rest of the flight to return.

YouTube Link

Jenner-Parsons and Simpson got an Albatros each. That was the good news. The bad news was that the pilot that collided with the two-seater at the start of the mission was Scudmore.

Nothing in the bag today. B Flight got off in the dark skies at 0926 hrs for a Line Patrol. Encountered in the Muck a flight of Huns slightly lower so we came down in a high side pass. I got o off a full drum. As I zoomed, I picked up a e/a on my tail so it was twist turn or get burned ! I finally lost him and everybody else in the Muck and clouds. Vis was down to less than 1/4 mile ,but found a friendly Airfield.

"... I nearly did not make it today ..."

Sad news for the Jagdstaffel this morning- news reached us that Friedrich Geiger burnt body had been recovered from his burnt plane in a hedgerow near Lille. He was a victim of ground fire. Our airfield is much, much too close to the Tommy trenches! Its costing lives.
We didn't think we'd be flying this morning the weather was atrocious, rain, sleet and snow. But the roast-beef eating British seem unconcerned with the weather and launched an audacious raid on our airfield, no doubt we are causeing them some headaches and they want to ram it down our throats. At 09:05 as the bombs from on high were rainning down on us we were warming up our engines to intercept.

The sky was full of British planes, B.E.2s were up high and Strutters and Tripes doveon us to attack as we were taking off, it was a mass of confusion, bullets and splintered wood and canvas. Its all a blur, I got a few shots off but was constantly at a disadvantage and was in such a bad shape I was forced to land North west of our airfield. Shortly after landing I was unconscious and came to in Hospital again. Once again being cared for by the wonderful Mother Wendy. I think I was in the air for less than 5 minutes and am lucky to be alive. The doctor says I should be out by the end of the month.

I've caught the whole sorry episode on video ... if you fancy flying it and seeing how you fair here is a link for the mission.

If you fly it let me know how you get on chaps! I wonder how Toby, Ganz, Nigel, Swanny, Lazlo and Collins would fair!
To Be Continued ...
