The problem with real-life Kerbaling your way into space is that you only get one Kerbal, and the game uninstalls forever when you fail.

I've spent some time looking into the whole flat-Earth thing, it's odd, but there's several reasons it attracts people to stick with the idea. It's a somewhat interesting topic on it's own.

DM,I've spent way too much time watching FE videos, especially the de-bunking ones. I have yet to see any real proof that it's flat. What is more interesting is the people behind the FE theory. Why do they do it? Are they just wilfully ignorant, are they doing it to be different,or to get YT views and followers on social media?

In a way it's a pity Flat Mike didn't pull this off,but then again the FE'ers would be all over any footage he took claiming 'fish-eye' lens, perspective, refraction or NASA interference to explain the curve of the Earth.

Link explains Flat Earth theory perfectly:

(It’s an idea gaining global acceptance.. )

People who knew him are saying Mad Mike didn't believe the flat earth crap, it was all just a ploy to get publicity for his stunts.

To be clear: I don't believe they have any real argument or proofs, the reasons I talk of are more social than scientific smile Of course there's the hardcore types who just have invested in this idea and cannot possibly admit to being wrong. A dichotomy of mind. I guess there must genuinely 100% believe it, but once you've "come out" as a FE then I can imagine it's a difficult place to come back from emotionally.
Another element to it is a basic non-understanding of the explanations. A lack of understanding of scale, perspective, geometry, math, but still a desire to try and engage on those levels bring out all the hilarious FE videos we've all seen. An interesting side-effect, for me, is that very occasionally a question will be asked where I go "actually that's a good question, I don't know the answer to that" and it gets me digging into it to find the answer. And there's always an answer. smile

There's probably some amount of "conspiracy" fantasy belief going on as well, like any proof is dismissed because the resources available to "them" are huge and technically competent. There's literally no amount of proof you can offer them, they are invested in the idea in general that the reason their lives suck must of course be because someone else is holding them down somehow.

But I guess another aspect to it all is the social aspect. From what I've been able to find out, the FE community is a very accepting & generally polite & pleasant community. If you find yourself in that community, I can see that you might hugely prefer it to the hostile "science" debunking community, and hugely prefer "believing" a fairly benign fantasy to constant mocking and aggressive mansplaining smile

Of course won't know the outcome were he successful, but I suspect any FE investing as much resource as this guy will not easily be turned, even in the face of his own first hand evidence. I might be doing him a disservice, but that would be my guess.

We already know the earth isn't flat or cats would have pushed everything off by now.

So what was supposed to happen here? Did a chute fail or was there any plan for what happened once gravity won the tug-of-war?

That's the chute tearing away right after launch. That would explain it.

Outsch. The people on the ground had plenty of time to realize he wasn't coming down at appropriate speed, even before the apex...

You know, it's always a sad thing when a person gets killed in an accident but I really cannot even begin to comprehend this guy's stupidity.

Correct. But based on what can be seen I'd say that looks like a military surplus personnel 'chute, which wouldn't have produced enough drag to reduce his rate of descent to a safe level even if it hadn't ripped away on liftoff or deployment (another distinct possibility). This was going to end in tragedy, no matter what. It just made a deeper hole this way.

If he had just gone online and GOOGLE "Earth", he would had seen the world is round. Surely he has seen photos of Earth before? How about a world globe in a classroom?

That rocket of his would not had gotten him to outer space anyway and if it did, how was he going to get back and what kind of life support system and reentry computer did it had on board.
