Some of you may find this list interesting. I looked up a current list of the 10 most popular games on Steam and here is what I found:

I'm not sure if "current players" means people who just have the game currently installed or people who have the game installed AND are active/recent players of the game. Either way, the results are interesting to see.

When you look at your Steam profile it shows the games you played in the past 15 days. So I would say people who launched the game in the past two weeks, but I must be wrong.

I think that means how many players are in the game, right then.

I sometimes judge how popular games are by looking at the viewer count on Twitch TV. GTAV is always up there,usually in the top 5. Not bad for an eight year old game.

There is a current players row, and peak today row. I assumed current players where people currently in game right now. And Peak was the max number of player in game that day so far.

I was quite surprised to see one of the games I regularly play on the top 10 list which is Rainbow Six Siege.

I played Pub for a while, hacker city made it far too annoying. Much like GTAV online on pc although the hackers in gta are far more obvious.

Current player is live now at that moment you check it, there is XXXX players playing/in-game

the other stat is the peak(not the total) of players that played the game the day you're checking it
