Was there ever any official cause for the disaster?
I've heard various reasons. From an internal explosion to being hit by a torpedo. Odd that they would leave the only part of the sub that had the answers at the bottom of the sea.

From the movie, a torpedo warhead overheated and exploded while they were taking its temps. Chain reaction of torpedoes exploded after the first. Leading to its doom.
After reading the Wiki report it is pretty much happened. Peroxide leak mixing with kerosene. You can`t run fast enough. Remember the bad Nazi rocket launches inside a sub. Yikes. Not a wonder they made the movie this way, easier to explain.

Netflix has a movie about this. "The Command" gives an idea what happened I think I seen part of this. It was on one day when I came home, I watch some of it, asked what is it about, they said some Russian submarine disaster, I watch a little bit more and left to do other things. This movie? https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_command

True to form, the Russian government tried to blame the US for the Kursk incident. How cute.

I remember a theory that it was hit by a torpedo from a shadowing US sub and there was an agreement between the US and Russia to cover it up to prevent an incident. I can't remember whether it was that Netflix show or not or if the theory came from the same people who also thought that the Titanic was switched with its sister ship in an insurance fraud There was another incident in the Atlantic off Spain iirc it was a collision.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.
