https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...l-tanker-ignites-ramp-465-70/4826762002/

Amazing the driver got out alive and the three good samaritans who helped him were not injured while the tanker and the fast spilling jet fuel was burning and exploding around them.

Does a jet fuel carrying tanker has the writing on it specifically saying jet fuel or just gasoline like I sometime seen on tankers refilling a gas station?

If this tanker was carrying regular fuel like unleaded gasoline or diesel, would the explosion be the same size, smaller or bigger?

I am not a chemist so I don't know.

We had a tanker explode in Atlanta on one of our major bypasses a couple of decades ago and the heat was so intense it melted through the pavement. The road was shut down all summer for repairs.

I assume an electric spark can cause it to explode if the tanker has cracks in it that allows the gasoline fumes to escape.

I have the habit for years now when I see a tanker or a big rig on the road which some of them carry chemicals, to stay as far away from it behind it or pass it quick and distance myself from it as fast as I can.

Most grades of jet fuel are basically highly refined kerosene (diesel). In my experience as a firefighter, the explosions were most likely caused when the tires overheated due to fire and possibly the fuel tanks on the truck itself over-pressuring due to the heat of the fire. Jet fuel itself will burn, but the article said the tanker split open, so there likely wouldn't have been pressure inside the tanker itself to cause an explosion. On most vehicle fires, firefighters face more danger from exploding tires than the fuel tanks. MOST of the time fuel tanks will vent either through the filler cap or the tank will rupture allowing the fuel to spill out rather than explode.

I didn't know about the explosive tires. In the movies you always see people trying to run away from a burning vehicle before it goes up in a gigantic ball of fire.

Remarkably selfless woman helper considering:
"One of the good Samaritans, Holly McNally, gave birth to her fourth child early Sunday morning. She and her mother were driving home from the hospital, where the baby remains in the neonatal intensive care unit, when she saw a man on fire."

I agree. That woman deserves to get some kind of award.

Aviation fuel has a code of UN 1863. It has a diamond placard that is red and Class 3.

I have seen those signs before. I didn't know what they mean.

Info for Emergency Services and Breakdown/recovery so they can identify the contents of the tank and know what safety precautions to be taken if the vehicle is immobilised for any reason.
Obviously not readable in this conflagration!

I recall reading a post here concerning a SimHQ member pulling victims from a vehicle that had rolled down a bank. Other bystanders were reluctant to get involved as they imagined there was danget of explosion thanks to film and TV.

Dam movies. We all been brainwashed to think the fuel tank on the vehicle is the threat. This is the first time I have ever heard of the tires being the actual threat. I learned something new today.

Of course a tire exploding on screen won't be able to make a big pretty Special Effects fireball that goes 20 feet up in the air and 50 feet all around it.
