The Australian today:

"The NSW Rural Fire Service will say “thank you” to America for the next two weeks in Times Square, the beating heart of New York City, on a massive screen.

The 20-metre high ad rotates between two screens, emblazoned on a black background that gives way to a wall of flames.

“Imagine fighting a fire higher than this billboard,” it reads in the video that went live on Wednesday.

“Thank you to the brave Australian and US firefighters defending Australia. And to the world for all your support.”

Thanks guys, will not forget.

"You'll never take me alive" said he,
And his ghost may be heard if you pass by that billabong
"Who'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me?"

You are welcome. We know that you and your fellow countrymen would do the same in a second.

Agreed.

Most of them are. We've had bloody floods after the fires. Like the old farmer said, "it's too dry or too wet or too hot or too cold" smile

I don't feel that I was involved enough to say "you're welcome," since it's not like I'm a firefighter or anything, but I am glad that the US was able to assist. In SoCal, we had significant fires and then came the rain and the floods and the mudslides, so I know how that goes, although on a smaller scale. Here's hoping that it's done for a while now.

Ken Cartwright

No single drop of rain feels it is responsible for the flood.

It's a thanks to you all. Most Australians think of the US as a friend in need. We could see the fires advancing on our house, it was a bad time. I'm 74 and regret being too old.

Just a case of one friend helping another. The US and Australia have had a long friendly relationship. One that can be depended on.

Just glad that the horrible situation has been resolved. What terrible fires. So sad seeing the people and animals. I guess it will be years before Australia recovers.

The films of the wildlife dragging themselves through burned out land was heartbreaking.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

There is to be a Royal Commission appointed that will investigate all aspects of the fires and make formal recommendations to ensure no repeats. I don't think things will ever be the same.

Canadians were there in Ozland helping fight the fires and iirc before the Americans showed up.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

"Post script to" something like that is a good thing to hear.

Please mate, no offence meant, there were firies from many countries, New Zealand was another. I meant to exclude no-one. You Canucks have always been there as have we for you guys. We think specially of the US as they lost lives helping us, but remember all of you. I speak not just for myself, I have many firies as friends here, and they have long memories too.

No problem Max, we just quietly go about our business without fanfare.

It would certainly be nice though if that were possible.

Resurrecting this thread with a bit of a non sequitur that will make sense in a few minutes. Earlier I was watching the video for the song “The Highwayman” by The Highwaymen (Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash.)

One of the comments was a 5th verse, and remembering this thread I thought it was appropriate to post here.

Adding this verse for the firies who just died in Australia’s bush fires:

I was a fireman
Toward the danger I’ve always gone
Axe in hand and helmet on

Burning buildings
Are where men like me are made
I’d be a liar to say that I was never afraid

Breathed the flames of hell
Just like any other day
And now I’m gone they say
But I’ll be back someday, someday, someday...

The rusty wire that holds the cork that keeps the anger in
Gives way and suddenly it’s day again
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done
Two suns in the sunset, hmph
Could be the human race is run
