Just curious as to what people's experience have been with variable refresh rate. I currently don't have the capacity with my current monitor to run G-Sync or Freesync, but I am very interested to hear of anyone's personal experience utilizing it (positives or negatives) with this sim or others.

Noticed no difference just like I notice no difference between 40 fps and 140 fps

I use G-Sync. Has nothing to do with FPS ..it's used to prevent screen tearing so you're images are not split or cracked

Thanks for the observations so far. I know it doesn't impact FPS. However, aside from screen tearing, I heard it was also suppose to help with games where frame rates can vary wildly and help ease transition from sudden high fps to low fps and vice versa (helping with tearing) - but also helping to prevent some stuttering that may occur in this situation as well (also throwing in Low Frame Rate Compensation (LFC) - which goes hand-in-hand automatically with most Gsync/Freesync capable monitors 144hz +)). Wondering if people are noticing generally a good impact from having it on vs. off?

I'm using a combination of G-sync and Fast Sync (G-sync for lower than 60 FPS and Fast Sync for above 60 FPS), I have no Tearing and the only "Stuttering" is from the CFS3.exe it's self as it loads new terrain during the game.

How are you finding it in other combat flight sims? - I think these are perfect candidates for what variable refresh rates are really suppose to impact (with generally big ranges and fluctuations in fps), yet it is hard to get a read as we are a minority gaming group. If you disable your G-sync are you getting some issues from time to time?

I am just trying to get a gauge as to how useful variable refresh rate (ala G-sync/Freesync) is with combat flight sims in particular - worth having it or not?

(** for those not in the know, G-sync/Freesync will sync up the refresh rate of the monitor to the frames actually being produced by your video card (providing it falls within a set range that the monitor and variable refresh is able to accomplish) on the fly - this is suppose to help greatly with screen tearing and also with stuttering which can occur as a result of framerate changes (also know that the refresh rate of the monitor is the maximum actual framerate that the monitor is capable of displaying, regardless of what the video card is capable of)).

Surprising enough, G-sync and Fast Sync actually work better in WOTR than WOFF, even though the overall FPS are lower in WOTR than WOFF.

As for IL-2, my PC is so strong, it never wavers from 60 FPS no matter what, so G-sync never comes into play.

I'm been using a 100Hz Ultra Wide G-Sync for 4 years now and it works perfectly to eliminate tearing.

Not so much for covering up game generated jittering/stuttering from uneven frame pacing. (It may be helping, but without a side by side comparison with a conventional monitor I can't tell since I'm still seeing some)

My new (Jan 2020) system is powerful enough that I can use the new Ultra Low Latency mode that keeps the CPU and GPU tied together 1 for 1, so I don't see some of the little syncing glitches I used to get where frames would jump ahead in time.

I've experimented a lot with different Frame Rate Limiters trying to see if they can smooth frame pacing out further, but none of them were entirely successful so I'm just using Nvidia Profile Inspector's V1 (lowest latency version).

Also, in some situations I can now achieve frame rates >100 fps where VSync is still needed to prevent tearing, but nothing close to approaching where Fast Sync can be used effectively (>2X the max screen refresh rate).

To sum up I'm currently running:
Ryzen 7 3700X
EVGA RTX 2070 Super
G-Sync 3440x1440 Monitor at 100 Hz
Vsync On
97 FPS V1 Frame Rate Limiter
Ultra Low Latency Mode

G-SYNC on, 144Hz refresh rate, V-SYNC ON set to1/2 refresh rate (use Nvidia Inspector to set this) = the best, most consistent and smoothest flying experience with WOFF for me.
