British Airways flight crosses Atlantic in less than 5 hours sets a new speed record for subsonic commercial aircraft to fly between Heathrow airport and JFK airport

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/10/british-airways-flight-crosses-atlantic-in-less-than-5-hours.html

Are we landing already?

I haven't received my dinner meal service, my 2 free alcoholic beverages; nor have I taken a nap and I still need to watch the in-flight movie..

What they do? Push the throttle all the way? I flew from NY to Europe once and it took 8 hours.

Wow!

That's even quicker than flying non stop from New York to Los Angeles which is a 6 1/2 hours to 6 3/4 hours flight.

NY to LA: 3,944 km= 2,451 miles.

NY to London: 5,585 km= 3,470 miles

Should be able to fly nonstop from NY to LA in a lot less time than that 6 1/2 plus hours..

1,000 miles less to fly.

It helps to have a storm’s worth of tailwind smile

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

I think you misunderstood the post from BD-123. Planes flying in the opposite direction would be flying INTO the storm so hence they would be considerably slowed down.

You're pretty well off if you always fly first class!

Which airline gives you 2 free drinks and dinner for flying coach? None that I've ever heard of.

Any flight I have ever been on that flew to Europe from Canada always provided fee meals ( up to and including about 6 months ago ) I never drink on airplanes but I'm pretty sure you can get wine with your meal if you ask smile

Most airlines do when you fly long haul.

When I took 30 days vacation time (leave) in the Army, I flew home to Georgia in a Lufthansa flight. This was in 1986. All the beer was free. So I stuck with beer. I forget which brand, but it was a good German brand. smile

Time and speed are relative...ask Al E.

Well I had a big story of my return trip from Hawaii in 1969, myself from FL and another 17 yr old surf kid from CA, an EMPTY DC-8, except for the crew and FIVE stewardesses.

Well it was fun, in fact more fun in 5 hours than most people have in their lives. Almost 6 miles up I think, Decided ya'll wouldn't believe it anyway. I wouldn't either except I was there.

Back to your regular scheduled programming.

Oh, and getting there in style beats the heck out of being early. IMHO of course.

Nixer, just curious as to the gender of this "17 yr old surf kid from CA" (and please pick from the 2 major ones or you'll confuse me). biggrin

EDIT: Oops, sorry. I gotta Winger song stuck in my head. I see "FIVE stewardesses." So you're a member of the mile high club, and then some?

Ice Cold in Alex or Eating in ...
I used to fly business class Glasgow to/from London quite regular and we always got a complimentary 33cl bottle of champagne, I had quite a stock of them as I didn't drink it, gave them to my mum when I used to go visit her. Breakfast was served on the way down and dinner served on the way back to Glasgow.

Then company policy changed, from flying Business with British Midland to flying cattle class with Sleazy Jet, Ticket for Business class on BM was around £135 each way took off from Glasgow 07:30, landed at Heathrow 08:45 and in the office at 09:05, Easy Jet, at airport for 05:30 to queue for a seat, got into Stanstead Luton at 09:00 then bus to train, train to London change station and out to Sunbury (beside Heathrow) in office for 11:00. When I pointed out to them that it was costing more to the company and getting less work done in a day they shrugged their shoulders and said new rules from the American head office, we had to use the cheapest flights. They saved £60 on the flight then spent £40 on the bus/train and then there was the lost manhours on top of that not including the fact that you had almost put in a full work day just traveling.
Policy was changed a week later and back to flying BM biggrin
Then I was promoted and moved to head office in Sunbury.

Edit: Miss that, having a chauffeur waiting for you at the arrivals and a Mercedes limo to take you to the office, we did try one of the sales men picking me up from Luton airport but it took even longer to get to the office.
